Comparisons on the worker's health status and working environment between small and large industries in Kyeungin industrial complex (경인지역 대규모 사업장과 소규모 사업장의 작업환경 및 종사 근로자의 질병 이환율 비교)

  • Generally working environment and worker's health status of small scale industries (SSI) which employ less than 50 workers are known to be poorer than those of large scale industries(LSI) which employ more than 500 workers. However, according to the analysis of occupational injuries in Korea, prevalence rate of occupational injuries of SSI was 3.1 times as high as LSI. But there was no difference in prevalence rate of occupational disease and werkers with suspected occupational disease(D1) between SSI and LSI. To confirm these two different facts, we surveyed working environment and worker's health status of SSI and LSI in Kyeungin industrial complex. Workers in SSI were 10,878 and workers in LSI were 8,291 and number of hazardous agents in SSI were 3,554 and those of LSI were 1,916. We found following results. First, proportion of male workers and workers who were less than 30 yens old and more than 50 yens old was higher in SSI compared to LSI. Second, worker in SSI had more liver disease, viral hepatitis, and pneumoconiosis than in LSI, and there were more worker with suspected occupational disease, general disease, and worker needed close observation in SSI. But these effects had not statistical significance under the condition controlled by age and sex with logistic regression. Third, the numbers measured for specific chemicals, organic solvents, and heavy metals in SSI was more than in LSI. However there was on difference in the excess rate of each hazardous agent between SSI and LSI. As the above results workers' health status in SSI was poorer than in LSI, but these results were mainly due to the population structure difference. Although there were some limitation of this study and problems of sensitivity and validity for periodic health examination and working environment evaluation method, the concept that working environment and worker's health status in SSI should be reviewed. In future the study that will reveal the real weak point of SSI should be performed.

Stress and Coping of Manufacturing Male Workers (생산직 남성 근로자의 스트레스와 대처유형)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify stress and coping patterns of manufacturing male workers. Method: Data were collected from 215 manufacturing male workers and analyzed by SPSS WIN 12.0 Results: The total job stress score was 41.41 and the mean of the daily hassles score was 1.60. Related to the coping type, direct-active coping was the highest among four types of coping. Indirect-active coping was the second, followed by direct-passive coping and indirect-passive coping. Job stress score and daily hassles score were highly correlated by passive coping types. Conclusion: Occupational health management program including coping strategy is required to relieve workers' stress.

Gender Differences in Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders among Agricultural Workers

  • Objective: The aim of this paper is to survey the gender differences Work-related musculoskeletal disorders among agriculture workers. Background: The number of occupational injuries has been decreasing trend in Korea, but it has been increasing in agriculture. The ratio of women worker shows steady increasing trend among the agricultural worker in Korea. Method: This study investigated through the questionnaire to 358 agricultural workers who are working for agriculture located in Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk and Jeju. Results: The task types occurring frequently and the weight of a heavy object handled according to the sex were showed statistically significant difference. The estimation of WMSDs patients by sex appeared statistically very significant difference. Conclusion: The prevalence rate of WMSDs in female was about 21 percent higher than the prevalence rate of WMSDs in male. Application: The result of this study will help improvement of work environment and prevention of WMSDs in agricultural work.

A Study of Actual Conditions of the Health for the Foreign Workers (외국인 근로자들의 건강 실태 조사 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify foreign worker's health problem. Method: Data were collected by interview and analyzed by using the Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test. Result: The most frequent health problem was 'diarrhea' and the next, 'cold' and 'dental caries'. There were significant differences in health problem by gender. There were significant differences in health problem, regular health checkup between legal workers and illegal workers. Conclusion: Judging from this study result, health program for foreign workers should be developed according to whether they are male or female and whether they are legal or illegal immigrants.

A Study on the Expression Elements of Fashion Styles according to the Pursuit Image Types of the Male Office Worker (직장남성의 추구이미지에 따른 패션스타일 표현요소 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to derive the type of image pursued by men at work and to present the fashion style element as a method of expressing the image to be pursued. The was carried out by deriving the types of seeking images of men at work through literature research and questionnaire on seeking images and analyzing cases through FGI. The results of the study on fashion style elements for each type of image pursued are as follows. First, the reliable image appeared a gentle and formal fashion style, and colors and items were identified as the main elements of expression. Second, the refined image appeared in a chic and dandy fashion style, and colors, fabrics and items reflecting trends were identified as the main elements of expression. Third, the neat image was identified as a simple and minimal fashion style, and details, fabrics, and colors were identified as the main elements of expression. Fourth, the luxurious image was found to have an intellectual feeling in a classic fashion style, and color and material are the main elements of expression. Fifth, the dignified image appeared in a fashion style that was well-dressed and felt classy and heavy, and colors, patterns, and items were identified as the main elements of expression. Sixth, the energetic image emerged as a business casual style, except sporty or active functional styles, with overall comfortable and cheerful feeling, fit, color, and items were noted as the main elements of expression.

Impact of Working environment on Psychological Well-being in Male Baby boomers (베이비붐세대 남성의 근무환경이 심리적 안녕감에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to measure psychological well-being and to examine the associated factors in male baby boomers using Korean Working Conditions Survey Data 2011. Methods: This study was based on the 3rd Korean Working Conditions Survey Data 2011, which was conducted from June to November 2011 by the Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute. The total number of subjects was 3,340 male employees, who were born from 1955 to 1963 and responded to the question regarding occupational stress. Chi-square and multiple logistic regression were used for data analysis using the SAS ver 9.3 program. Results: Approximately 54.5% of the male babyboomer employees did not have psychological well-being. Factors associated with psychological well-being were weekend-shift and occupational stress including job insecurity, organizational system, and lack of reward. Night-shift and long working hours influenced psychological well-being, but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: This study is a meaningful attempt to measure psychological well-being and perform an analysis of associated factors in male baby boomer employees using nationwide survey data. We suggest a complex institutional supplement in terms of national and employers to increase the psychological well-being of baby boomers.

Factors Influencing Sleep Quality among Middle-aged Male Workers (중년남성 근로자의 수면의 질에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify quality of sleep and its influencing factor among middle-aged male workers. Methods: The subjects of this study were 411 middle-aged male workers living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The data were based from self-reported using structured questionnaires asking about low urinary tract symptoms, circadian rhythm, quality of life and sleep quality including general characteristics. The data were collected from September 11 to October 31, 2013 and analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and hierarchical regression. Results: Mean score of the sleep quality was $5.03{\pm}2.57$ (range: 0~21) and reported as bad sleep quality in 55.7%. Low urinary tract symptoms (${\beta}$=.30, p<.001), circadian rhythm (${\beta}$=-.17, p<.001), quality of life (${\beta}$=-.14, p<.001) were shown as significant association of sleep quality. Conclusion: Strategies to improve sleep quality in middle-aged male workers are necessary and nursing intervention should be developed to improve education program for prevention and management of low urinary tract symptoms. It is also necessary to legalize the institutional devices to upgrade work environment and to place regulations on overtime at work places in order for these workers to obtain sufficient sleep time for recovery of biological rhythms and improving sleep quality.

Comparison of Metabolic Syndrome Components, Abnormal Liver Function, and Living Habits according to Abdominal Obesity in Male and Female Workers (남녀근로자의 복부비만에 따른 대사증후군 구성요소, 비정상 간기능 및 생활습관 비교)

  • Purpose: This study attempted to compare the metabolic syndrome components, liver function and heathy living habits according to abdominal obesity in male and female workers. Methods: The subjects of this study are 1,078 adult workers who visited N hospital in Incheon for health examination. The data were analyzed using t-test or $x^2$-test with the SPSS/WIN 20.0 program. Results: Prevalence of metabolic syndrome are 22.2% in male workers, and 5.2% in female workers. There were significant differences in 4 metabolic syndrome components (high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL cholesterolemia), abnormal liver function, and living habits (alcohol drinking) according to abdominal obesity in male workers. There were significant differences in 1 metabolic syndrome component (low HDL cholesterolemia), and abnormal liver function in female workers. Conclusion: It is important to manage all metabolic syndrome components and alcohol drinking in the case of male workers with abdominal obesity, and low HDL cholesterolemia in the case of female workers. Also, occupational nurses should include the relevance between abdominal obesity and liver function index when training health for workers in workplace.

The Health Status and Occupational Characteristics Related to Gender of Migrant Worker in Korea (성별에 따른 외국인 근로자의 건강실태 및 직업적 특성)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in gender related to health status, occupational environment, occupational safety and health and hazardous chemicals use of migrant workers in Korea. Method: The survey was conducted in clinics that provided free healthcare services for migrant workers. Of the 413 respondents, 66.3% were males and 33.7% were females. Result: In the case of male migrant workers, many worker were not fluent in Korean, had illegal status in the country, and had moved jobs frequently. There were many cases in which migrant workers worked in small-scale enterprises and worked long hours. Job stress score was high for many workers and they dealt with heavy materials and risky machines. Many workers had not received proper occupational health and safety education and those that were previously injured had repeated injuries. Among the female migrant workers, many worker received low salary and shift work was common. Many worker complained of gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal illnesses and treated toxic substances. Conclusion: As a result, it will be necessary to focus on the strategies for decreasing occupational injuries from physical risk factors for males and from chemical risk factors for female migrant workers.

Mediated effect of job engagement in relationship between positive psychological capital and turnover intention of the event worker (이벤트업 종사원의 긍정심리자본과 이직의도간의 관계에서 직무열의의 매개효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the job engagement mediates relationship between positive psychological capital and turnover intention in the event worker. For it, a questionnaire survey is performed for 394 participants consisted of male and female living in BUSAN. Their age is from 20 to 50. Afterwards, the collected data is analyzed using the regression analysis. Positive psychological capital is significantly positive to the job engagement. Meanwhile, positive psychological capital is significantly negative to the turnover intention. Likewise, job engagement is significantly negative to the level of turnover intention. Also, job engagement partially mediated relationship between positive psychological capital and turnover intention. Therefore, this study suggests that it will be developed the mediation program that improves both work environment and positive psychological capital to increase job engagement as well as reduce turnover intention in the event worker.
