Purpose: The study examined the effects of self-efficacy and intercultural communicative competence on the cultural competence of allied health college students. Methods: The participants were 176 allied health college students. Data collection was conducted from June 12 to 30, 2018. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression analysis with the SPSS program. Results: The mean self-efficacy score was 3.52;, the mean intercultural communicative competence score was 3.24;, and the mean cultural competence score was 3.26. Cultural competence differed significantly by grade(p=.008), major(p<.001), overseas study exchange(p=.020), foreign language skill(p=.011), domestic multicultural friends (p=.002) and contact with people(p=.026) of general characteristics. Statistically significant positive relationships were observed between self-efficacy(r=.23), intercultural communicative competence(r=.58), and cultural competence. A total of 35.9% of cultural competence was explained by intercultural communicative competence and grade. Conclusion: These results can be used to develop cultural education programs to improve cultural competence, with consideration for intercultural communicative competence and grade levels.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of adolescents'social network and their self-perceived competence. In this study 207 seventh and ninth grade adolescents completed Social Network of Relationships Inventory(NRI) and Self-Perception Profile For Children(SPPC). The data were analyzed by Frequencies, Percentiles, t-test, Cronbach's $\alpha$, Pearson's correlation. Major findings were as follows: 1) Social network of relationships with various social agents made different contributions to the prediction of adolescents'self-perceived competence. 2) In social network of relationships, boys perceived significantly higher than girls for the social support from teacher. In Competence, boys perceived significantly higher than girls for the social acceptance and athletic competence. 3) In social network of relationships, the seventh grader perceived significantly higher than the ninth grader for the social support from mother, father and teacher. In scholastic competence, athletic competence, physical appearance and global self-worth, the seventh grader perceived significantly higher than the ninth grader.
Objectives: The major purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships of parent-child relationship and self-differentiation with interpersonal competence among college students. Specifically, this study also attempted to find the differences of three major variables according to participant's general characteristics, to investigate the correlations among variables and to analyze the effects of related variables on interpersonal competence. Method: The participants were 388 college students in Jeollabuk-do province. The data were collected by self-administered questionnaire method. Results: First, there were significant differences in the level of interpersonal competence according to gender and the monthly family income. Second, correlational analyses results indicated that college students' interpersonal competence was positively related with parent-child relationship and self-differentiation, and the latter two variables were also positively correlated. Finally, the results of multiple regression analyses reported that interpersonal competence was influenced by intimacy with mother, I-position, and emotional cutoff, showing that I-position was the most influential variable. In addition, I-position was also found to be the powerful variable affecting all sub-factors of interpersonal competence. Conclusions: This study suggests the importance of providing education and/or counseling services focusing on strengthening the relationship with their parents and on increasing self-differentiation level for college students' greater interpersonal competence, which are considered as critical indices of their mental health and psychological well-being.
Purpose: Since core competence-based training is in demand, this study aimed to develop a suitable talent model and major competencies for the Department of Physical Therapy at U University and use it to propose appropriate educational subjects. Methods: This case study was conducted at U university in Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. To study curricula based on major competence, related documents were analyzed, expert opinions were obtained, and a consumer survey was conducted. Results: U University assigns major competencies for each department, develops subjects accordingly, maps them, and constructs a competency matrix. The four major competencies of physical therapy were defined as musculoskeletal system, nervous system, cardiorespiratory system and sports injury, and physical management abilities. In order to realize these major competencies, U University added subjects to its curriculum. Conclusion: The results of internal and external environmental analysis should be more actively considered to enable changes in subjects at the departmental level. In addition, the setting of major competencies should be subjected to more detailed, specific reviews to maintain the basic principles of major curricula.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between maternal education level, social support, attribution, mother-child communication and children's social competence. The major findings of this study were as follows; (1) The higher maternal education level and the higher internal attribution were, the more negative mother-child communication was. (2) The higher maternal education level is, the higher perceived social support is, and the more open-mined/positive mother-child communication is, the higher children's initiative, competence and sociability. Also, the more mother attribute children's behavior internally, the lower the children's competence is.
This study was conducted to identify the level of cultural empathy, self-esteem, and cultural competence and factors affecting cultural competence of nursing students. Participants were 157 nursing students who were 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade in one university located at the Chungbuk provinces. Data collected using questionnaires which consisted of general characteristics, cultural empathy, self-esteem, and cultural competence. The mean score for cultural empathy was $3.63{\pm}.34$(scores ranged from 1 to 5), The mean score for self-esteem was $2.91{\pm}.42$(scores ranged from 1 to 4). The mean score for cultural competence was $3.31{\pm}.43$(scores ranged from 1 to 5). There were significant differences between cultural competence and age(t=-2.242, p=.027), grade(F=3.473, p=.033), and fluency of foreign language(F=5.053, p=.007). There were significant correlation between cultural competence and cultural empathy(r=.49, p<.001), and self-esteem(r=.33, p<.001)), and self-esteem and cultural empathy(r=.33, p<.001). Cultural empathy and self-esteem explained 29.4% of cultural competence and major predictor variable for cultural competence was cultural empathy. In this paper, we propose various multicultural education programs in curriculum and extra curriculum that can enhance cultural empathy and self-esteem to improve cultural competence of nursing students. Especially, continuous education of cultural knowledge among cultural competence will be done.
This research paper looks into the interrelationships between physical self-perception, performance confidence, physical self-efficacy, dance flow and dance performance satisfaction with dance major students as the central figure. It also looks into the needs of dance majors, and in order to understand the accomplishment in dance and performance satisfaction, studies were carried out on 313 dance major students. According to this research, firstly, in the difference from physical self-perception according to general characteristics, specialists that major in dance have perception about one's body when specialists have a longer dancing time and experience. In the relationship between dancing experience and self-efficacy it could be seen that self-efficacy is postirely comelated with dancing experience. Also, in dance performance satisfaction, the more experience or time one encounters dance the higher the satisfaction. Secondly, when looking at the effect physical self-perception has on performance, confidence and self-efficacy, among the lower factors of physical self-perception, sports competence, condition and fitness have notable amount of effect on performance confidence. Thirdly, when looking at the effect on physical self-perception and self-efficacy, sports competence and condition have a certain amount of influence on body competence. Also sports competence, condition and fitness have some influence on physical confidence. Fourth, when looking at the influence of performance confidence and self-efficacy on dance flow, performance confidence, body competence and physical attraction have some effect on behavioral devotion. Lastry looking at the influence dance flow has on dance performance satisfaction, only behavioral devotion has much influence on dance performance satisfaction.
Purpose: This study examined the mediating effects of nursing professionalism on the relationship between the stress of clinical practice and compassion competence in nursing students. Methods: A correlational research design was used in this study. The participants were 120 nursing students recruited from three universities in South Korea. Data were collected using the self-reporting scales of stress of clinical practice, nursing professionalism, and compassion competence. Baron and Kenny's regression method and the Sobel test were used to analyze the mediating effects of nursing professionalism on the association between the stress of clinical practice and compassion competence. Results: The mean score for compassion competence was above average. Of the compassion competence domains, sensitivity and insights had the highest and lowest scores, respectively; there were significant mean differences in compassion competence scores according to their grade and level of satisfaction with nursing major. Compassion competence correlated negatively with the stress of clinical practice, whereas it correlated positively with nursing professionalism. In addition, nursing professionalism exerted full mediating effects on the relationship between the stress of clinical practice and compassion competence. Conclusion: The results suggested that enhancing nursing professionalism could help promote compassion competence among nursing students who experience stress in clinical practice.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate self-directed learning and critical thinking disposition which influence clinical competence in nursing students. Method: As a descriptive study, a total of 271 third year students were recruited from a nursing college in Daegu. A structured questionnaire was self-administered from June 7, 2011 to June 10, 2011. The data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN version 12. Results: In self-directed learning, there were significant differences in gender (t=2.26, p=.025), satisfaction of major (F=7.77, p=.001), and satisfaction of clinical experience (F=10.39, p<.001). Critical thinking disposition differed in gender (t=2.82, p=.005). Moreover gender (t=4.00, p<.001), satisfaction of achievement (F=6.50, p=.002), satisfaction of major (F=4.24, p=.015), and satisfaction of clinical experience (F=9.54, p<.001) differed with clinical competence. Clinical competence was positively related to self-directed learning (r=.45, p<.001) and critical thinking disposition (r=.51, p<.001). According to the result of multiple regression, critical thinking disposition (t=5.80, p<.001), satisfaction of achievement (t=3.33, p=.001), gender (t=2.93, p=.004) and self-directed learning (t=2.35, p=.019) were significant factors of clinical competence explaining 33.0% of the variances. Conclusion: Critical thinking disposition, satisfaction of clinical experience, gender and self-directed learning had a positive effect on clinical competence in nursing students. To enhance clinical competence for nursing students, it is necessary to develop self-learning teaching strategy and curriculum.
The purpose of this study is to examine, according to sex and grade, the relationship and difference between mothers' parenting attitudes and self-perceived competences of their children. 197 children of the 4th through the 6th grade were selected from an elementary school in Daejeon area. We used the Perceived Competence Scale for Children (Harter, 1982) to measure their self-perceived competence and the Mother's Parenting Attitudes Scale (1990, Lee & Park) to measure parenting attitudes of their mothers. Major findings are as follows: First, there were significant differences in the children's self-perceived competence according to their perception of parental warmth and control. Children with more perception of parental warmth and consistent control considered themselves higher in cognitive and social competences and in self-worth. Boys perceived higher mother's consistent control and positive participation in parenting-attitudes than girls. Girls perceived themselves higher than boys in global self-worth. Next, Out of the three grades the 4th graders indicated more perception of attachment, authoritarian control, and positive participation in parenting attitudes. There was statistically no difference in self-perceived competences of children according to their grades. Finally, there were correlations between mothers' parenting attitudes and perceived competences of their children. Children with more perception of parental warmth, attachment, positive participation, and consistent control showed higher level of physical competence, social competence, and global self-worth.
