Optimal Location Issue on both Supporting Bearing and Unbalance Mass of the Balance Shaft Module in a Inline 4-Cylinder Engine (직렬 4기통 엔진용 밸런스 샤프트 모듈의 불평형 질량 및 베어링 위치 선정)

  • Large quantity of bending deformation as well as irregular rotating torque fluctuation are the main struggles of the balance shaft module during a high speed rotation. Since two issues are much sensitive to the location of both supporting bearing and unbalance mass at a balance shaft, it is recommended to construct a design strategy on balance shaft at the early stage so as to save developing time and effort before approaches to the detailed design process. In this paper, an optimal design formulation is proposed to minimize the elastic strain energy due to bending as well as the kinematic energy of polar moment of inertia in rotation. Case studies of optimal design are conducted for different mass ratio as well as linear combination of objective function and its consequence reveals that global optimum of balance shaft model is existed over possible design conditions. Simulation shows that best locations of both supporting bearing and unbalance are globally 20% and 80%, respectively, over total length of a balance shaft.

Study on uplift performance of stud connector in steel-concrete composite structures

  • The main role of studs, which act as connectors of the steel-concrete composite structures, is to ensure that the steel and the concrete work together as a whole. The studs in steel-concrete composite structures bear the shearing force in the majority of cases, but in certain locations, such as the mid-span of a simply supported composite beam, the studs bear axial uplift force. The previous studies mainly focused on the shearing performance of the stud by some experimental and theoretical effort. However, rare studies involved the uplift performance of studs. In this paper, the single stud uplift test on 10 composite specimens was performed. Meanwhile, based on the test, numerical analysis was introduced to simulate the concrete damage process due to the stud uplifted from concrete. The static ultimate bearing capacity, under which the stud connector was pulled out from the damaged reinforced concrete, is much larger than the cyclic ultimate bearing capacity, under which the weld joint between stud and steel plate fractured. According to the fatigue test results of 7 specimens, the fatigue S-N curve of the construction detail after minus 2 times standard deviation is $logN=24.011-9.171\;log{\Delta}{\sigma}$, the fatigue strength corresponding to $2{\times}10^6$ cycles is 85.33 MPa.

  • This paper studies on the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) pipes used in basic sanitation in the conduction of storm water and sanitary sewer. Pipes with 800 mm and 1200 mm in diameter were analyzed. The 800 mm pipes were built with simple reinforcement and the 1200 mm pipes with double reinforcement. For the two diameters of pipes the presence or absence of the pocket was evaluated, and the denomination of each one is spigot and pocket pipe (SPP) and ogee joint pipe (OJP), respectively. The 3D numerical models reproduce the three-edge-bearing test that provides information about the strength and stiffness of the reinforced concrete pipes. The validation of the computational models was carried out comparing the vertical and horizontal displacements on the springline and crown/invert and it was also evaluated the reinforcement strains and the crack pattern. As a main conclusion, the numerical models represented satisfactorily the behavior of the pipes and can be used in future studies in parametric analysis.

  • Background: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is probably one of the most successful surgical interventions performed in medicine. Through the revolution of hip arthroplasty by principles of low friction arthroplasty was introduced by Sir John Charnley in 1960s. Thereafter, new bearing materials, fixation methods, and new designs has been improved. The main concern regarding failure of THA has been the biological response to particulate polyethylene debris generated by conventional metal on polyethylene bearing surfaces leading to osteolysis and aseptic loosening of the prosthesis. To resolve these problems, the materials of the modern THA were developed since then. Methods: A literature search strategy was conducted using various search terms in PUBMED. The highest quality articles that met the inclusion criteria and best answered the topics of focus of this review were selected. Key search terms included 'total hip arthroplasty', 'biomaterials', 'stainless steel', 'cobalt-chromium', 'titanium', 'polyethylene', and 'ceramic'. Results: The initial search retrieved 6921 articles. Thirty-two articles were selected and used in the review. Conclusion: This article introduces biomaterials used in THA and discusses various bearing materials in currentclinical use in THA as well as the newer biomaterials which may even further decrease wear and improve THA survivorship.

An Experimental Study on the Damping Capacity of Lead Rubber Bearing with High Lead-plug Area Ratio (납-플러그 면적비가 큰 LRB의 감쇠능력에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Many engineering researches are performed to ensuring structural safety from earthquake. In this study, the damping capacity of LRB(lead rubber bearing) with high lead-plug area ratio was examined by hysteresis loop from experiments. The displacement controlled tests were performed for 12 specimens designed in 2 types by lead-plug area ratio as main parameter. Each coupled specimens were tested by 3 times sinusoidal loads with different loading velocities. From the experimental results, LRB with high lead-plug area ratio has sufficient damping ratio for reducing horizontal seismic load to structures.

  • Molybdenum as by-products of Sangdong tungsten mine occurrs in the form of molybdenite in quartz vein. The molybdenum contents of scheelite in Sangdong ore bodies ranges from trace to 8%, therefore the scheelites show variable fluorescence colores under ultra-violet lamp (short wave). The fluorescence color are in order high content of molybdenum, yellow, white and blue. The yellow fluorescing scheelite is dominant in upper ore vein, otherwise the blue fluorescent variety is dominant in lower ore vein. The fluorescence color of scheelite in the main ore vein show zonal distribution becoming progressively more blue outerwards, contrary more yellow innerwards, and even in single scheelite crystal, simillar zonal pattern is observed, too. Molybdenite occurrs as flakes or elongated blades at the margins of the quartz vein only molybdenite bearing quartz veins but also other sulfides mineral bearing quartz veins have mainly blue flourescing scheelites. We suggest that the molybdenum contents of the early stage ore solution are progressively decreased by a subsequent crystallization of the yellow fluorescing scheelites.

  • One of the most important element technologies for achieving high-precision in machine tool spindle systems is preload technology for the bearing of spindle systems. Fixed position preload, constant pressure preload, conversion preload and variable preload methods have been applied for the spindle systems. In this study, a new variable preload method using centrifugal force and rubber pressure is used for reducing installation costs through simplifying its structure. The main objective of the work is the verification of the operability in a preload device using the rubber pressure by the finite element analysis. It is shown that the variable preload device proposed in this study is applicable to high speed machine tool spindles.

  • The propeller induced forces acting on a hull are surface forces and bearing forces. The bearing forces are the forces acting directly on the propeller which are transferred to the hull through the propeller bearings. The surface forces are those which act by fluid pressure directly on the various hull surfaces. Because the surface force is main source to oscillate stern constructions and deckhouse, the estimation of surface force is very important to predict response of forced vibration of that. The estimation methods were statistical analysis method, theoretical analysis method and method through model test.

Fluid Inclusion Study of the Cretaceous Granite in the Yonghwa Area (용화(龍化)지역에 분포하는 백악기 화강암(化崗岩)에 포함된 유체포유물(流體包有物)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • Fluid inclusions have been studied in phenocryst quartz from the Cretaceous porphyritic granite. Three main types of fluid inclusion were found: liquid-rich inclusion (I type), gas-rich inclusion (II type) and solid-bearing inclusions (III-A, III-B). The solid-bearing inclusions (III-A, B) represent the earliest trapped fluids. They have salinities between 63 and 67.5 wt.% equivalent NaCl. These are high saline inclusions containing NaCl and KCl daughter crystals. Homogenization temperature inferred from the fluid inclusion study ranges from 620 to $700^{\circ}C$. Type I and II inclusions were observed within the same fracture. This cause for these differences in degree of filling is evidence of boiling. Salinities of type I and II inclusions range from 10.24 wt.% to 13.44 wt.%, from 8.4 wt.% to 11.48 wt.% NaCl equivalent, respectively.

Optimization of Magnetic Flux-path Design for Reduction of Shaft Voltage in IPM-Type BLDC Motor

  • In this paper, we propose a method for suppressing shaft voltage by modifying the rotor shape and the permanent magnets in interior permanent magnet type high voltage motors. The shaft voltage, which adversely affects the bearing by occurring bearing current, is induced by parasitic components and the leakage flux in motor-driven systems as well as inherent linkage flux between main magnetic flux and shaft according to rotor configuration. Thus, shaft voltage should be analyzed and considered under inverter-driven and non-inverter-driven conditions because inherent linkage flux can analyze under non-inverter-driven condition. In this study, we designed re-arrangement magnet and re-structuring rotor to minimize the shaft voltage. In addition, we optimized the proposed models. The shaft voltage suppression effect of the designed model was validated experimentally and by comparative finite element analysis.
