  • In this paper, authors propose novel boost AC-DC converter of high power factor and analyze for waveform and harmonics component of input current. The input current waveform in the proposed converter is got to be a sinusoidal form of discontinuous pulse in proportion to magnitude of at input voltage under the constant duty cycle switching. Therefore, input power factor is nearly unity. Particularly, the stored energy of loss-less snubber capacitor is recovered with input side and increases input current from resonant operation. The result is that input power factor of the proposed converter is higher than that of conventional converter of high power factor. Some simulative results on computer and experimental results are included to confirm the validity of the analytical results.

  • A low pass filter is synthesized with R, C and negative impedance converters(NIC). The filter has a 4-th order elliptic function, which gives best magnitude approximation with equi-ripple characteristics both in pass and stop band. And experimental investigations have been made on the effect of the anticipated deviation of the NIC conversion factor and of possible loaded operation. Through the study, it has been cocluded that: 1. For minimum pole-zero sensitivity with respect to the NIC conversion factor, the network of a parallel RC-NIC configuration is preferable and the Horowitz polynomial decomposition method is applied in the synthesis procedure. 2. A few percentage variation of the NIC conversion factor changes the frequency and amplitude characteristics of the filter by nearly negligible amount. 3. With a load resistance below the critical value, the filter turns into an oscillator.

  • A dynamic reliability model for analyzing the stability of armor units on rubble-mound breakwater is mathematically developed by using Hudson's formula and definition of single-failure mode. The probability density functions of resistance and loading functions are defined properly, the related parameters to those probability density functions are also estimated straightforwardly by the first-order analysis. It is found that probabilities of failure for the stability of armor units on rubble-mound breakwater are continuously increased as the service periods are elapsed, because of the occurrence of repeated loading of random magnitude by which the resistance may be deteriorated. In particular, the factor of safety is incorporated into the dynamic reliability model in order to evaluate the probability of failure as a function of factor of safety. It may thus be possible to take some informations for optimal design as well as managements and repairs of armor units on rubble-mound breakwater from the dynamic reliability analyses.

  • The Interfacial friction factor for the countercurrent stratified air-wafer flow has been experimentally investigated in nearly horizontal and inclined pipes. The presence of the hydraulic jump may significantly affect both the flow pattern and the interfacial friction factor. The measured values of f$_{i}$ in nearly horizontal and two inclined pipes are of the same order of magnitude but the dependencies of the air and water velocities are slightly different.t.

  • This paper presents the digital control of single-phase power factor correction(PFC) converter which has the variable gain according to the condition of inner control loop error. Generally the gain of inner current control loop in single-stage PFC converter has a constant magnitude. This has a bad influence on the power factor because current loop doesn't operate smoothly in the condition that input voltage is low In particular a digital controller has more time delay than an analog controller and degrades This drops the phase margin of the total digital PFC system,. It causes the problem that the gain of current control loop isn't increased enough. In addition the oscillation happens in the peak value of the input voltage open loop PFC system gain changes according to ac input voltage. These aspects make the design of the digital PFC controller difficult The digital PFC controller presented in this paper has a variable gain of current control loop according to input voltage. The 1kW converter was used to verify the efficiency of the digital PFC controller.

  • This paper is studied on a novel buck-boost isolated converter for high efficiency and high power factor. The switching devices in the proposed converter are operated by soft switching technique using a new quasi-resonant circuit, and are driven with discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) according to pulse width modulation (PWM). The quasi-resonant circuit makes use of a step up-down inductor and a loss-less snubber capacitor. The proposed converter with DCM also simplifies the requirement of control circuit and reduces a number of control components. The input ac current waveform in the proposed converter becomes a quasi sinusoidal waveform in proportion to the magnitude of input ac voltage under constant switching frequency. As a result, it is obtained by the proposed converter that the switching power losses are low, the efficiency of the converter is high, and the input power factor is nearly unity. The validity of analytical results is confirmed by some simulation results on computer and experimental results.

  • This paper present a summary of the results of statistical study of the ductility factor which is key component of response modification factor(R). To compute the ductility factor, a group of 1,860 ground motions recorded from various earthquake was considered. Based on the local site conditions at the recording station, ground motions were classified into four groups according to average shear wave velocity. Inleastic spectrum were computed for elastic perfectly plastic SDOF systems undergoing different level of inelastic deformation and period. Ductility factors were calculated by deviding elastic response spectrum by inelastic response spectrum. The influence f displacement ductility ratio, site condition, magnitude and epicentral distance on ductility factors were studied. The coefficient of variation was computed to evaluated the dispersion of ductility factors as the defined ratio of the standard deviation to the mean.

  • In this paper the insulation characteristics test results of 25 low-voltage induction motors($3\phi$, 5HP, 380V) are presented. Five different types of insulation techniques are applied to 25 motors. The maximum partial discharge (PD) magnitude ($\textrm{Q}_{m}$) discharge inception voltage (DIV) dissipation factor tip-up ($\Delta$tan$\delta$) and rate of change in AC current($\Delta$I) are measured by PD and AC current tests. Also the insulation breakdown tests by high voltage pulse are performed and the corresponding breakdown voltage are obtained.

  • Effect of magnetic field on the thermal instability is studied in the radiatively cooling region behind an interstellar shock of moderate propagation velocity (${\sim}10\;km/sec$). It is shown that the presence of interstellar magnetic field of a few micro gauss is very effective in preventing the thermal instability from building-up density concentration. In the absence of magnetic field, the shock-induced thermal instability amplifies preshock density inhomogeneity by more than an order of magnitude. However, in the presence of magnetic field, the amplified density contrast is shown to be only a factor 2.
