Errors resulting from magnification variations of a optical system are largely generated in three-dimensional shape measurements based on depth-from-focus. In the case of measuring the surface morphology of tiny objects based on DFF, images are acquired with a very small interval so that magnification changes can be minimized. However, the magnification variations are actually existed in the acquired images and so focus measures are wrongly or ambiguously extracted. In this paper, a methodology with linear magnification calibrations, based on DFF, is proposed to make more accurate measurement in surface morphology with high depth discontinuity, compared with previous ones. Several experiments show that the proposed method outperforms existing ones without magnification calibrations.

To provide variation of water supply for instream flow from reservoirs with various magnifications of paddy irrigation area to watershed area, 8 reservoirs were selected to draw operation rule curve and to analyze water supplies from reservoirs. Reliability of 90% for supplying irrigation water from reservoir was able to maintain and instream flow water was able to be supplied only in the reservoir with magnification of paddy irrigation area to watershed area above 3. The more magnification of paddy irrigation area to watershed area increased, the more ratio of irrigation water to total water storage decreased, and the more ratio of instream flow water to total water storage increased. From the heightening 113 reservoirs in Korea, annual irrigation water was estimated to 1,146.05 $Mm^3$ in normal operation, 839.57 $Mm^3$ in withdrawal limited operation, and annual instream flow water was estimated to 149.68 $Mm^3$ in normal operation, 283.19 $Mm^3$ in withdrawal limited operation. It was concluded that withdrawal limited operation was followed to have the premise of saving irrigation water, more instream flow water was able to be supplied from reservoirs with high magnification of paddy irrigation area to watershed area.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of head position changes on vertical and horizontal magnification in dental panoramic radiographs. Materials and Methods: Five 4 mm metal balls were placed above alveolar crest of dry skull considering extraction socket and dental arch. Panoramic radiographs were taken by OP-100D (Instrumentarium Imaging Co., Tuusula, Finland) at proper and rotated head position along the sagittal and transverse axis at 3 - $20^{\circ}$ upwardly, downwardly, to the left and to the right rotation. Images were stored in DICOM files and were measured by ruler equipped within INFINITT PACS software. Results: The mean horizontal magnification was $1.22{\pm}0.01-1.44{\pm}0.01$ and mean vertical magnification was $1.29{\pm}0.00-1.35{\pm}0.02$ at standard head position. There was statistical significance of horizontal magnification between the anterior ($1.24{\pm}0.02-1.31{\pm}0.03$) and the posterior area ($1.40{\pm}0.03-1.33{\pm}0.02$) (P < 0.05). Vertical magnification resulted in less variation ($1.24{\pm}0.01-1.37{\pm}0.02$) than horizontal magnification ($0.88{\pm}0.03-3.73{\pm}0.16$) according to the rotation. There was statistical significant difference on horizontal magnification (P < 0.05). Conclusion: In rotated head position, the horizontal magnification should be considered because these can cause distortion on panoramic radiographs.
Image magnification is the estimation of a few pixel in images with high quality from a pixel of an image with low resolution and there have been studied many techniques to make images with high quality. In this paper, we propose an image interpolation method using median filter and spatial information. The proposed method makes an interpolating pixel using an average value of a median filtered value and an average value of two pixels correlated with an interpolating pixel tightly. Also we make the magnified image with improved quality to add the directional information of surrounding pixels and the characteristic of ones using average value and max value of spatial variation. We evaluate the performance using PSNR in the quality of enlarged image comparing the proposed method with existing methods. The results show the proposed method improves PSNR than the existing methods and make images preserving the characteristic of original imges.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how image magnification in dental panoramic radiography is influenced by object position. Five metal balls (4 mm in diameter, 2 for the anterior and 3 for the posterior region on the right side) were placed above alveolar crest of dry skull considering extraction socket and dental arch. Dry skull was radiographed using OP-100D (Instrumentarium Imaging Co., Tuusula, Finland) at proper and displaced position along the sagittal and transverse plane at 3 mm, 6 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm and 15 mm using special mount which can control precise movement. Images were stored in DICOM files and were measured by ruler equipped within INFINITT PACS software (Infinitt Co., Ltd., Seoul, Korea). The mean horizontal magnification was 1.224-1.439 and mean vertical magnification was 1.286 - 1.345 at proper position. Vertical magnification resulted in less variation (1.245-1.418) than horizontal magnification (0.798-6.297) according to the sagittal and transverse displacements. Head positioning is important for linear measurement on panoramic radiography and inclusion of standard object (for instance, metal ball) is helpful to anticipate exact magnification of panoramic radiographs at various location.

This paper presents a theoretical approach to describe the characteristics of vibration transmission in the waveguide with varying cross-section. The waveguide considered in this paper has a tapered section in the middle of an axisymmetric stepped rod. The distributions of the vibration displacement and stress along the waveguide were derived and they were verified by comparing the theoretically-calculated results with those obtained by the finite-element analysis. The vibration magnification and the concentrated stress under forced vibration were calculated for this rod according to the taper length. The paper established a theoretical basement of designing waveguides for maximizing the vibration transmission under minimum stress concentration.
The multi-configurative microscopic system for inspecting the wire-bonding of reed frame is designed. Rays refracted by objective lens group which is composed of common lens group of x2 and x6 are splitted by beam-splitter, and Rays through the central region and the boundary region of the object imaged at x2 and x6 through imaging lens groups, respectively. The depth of wire structure on the reed frame has about $\pm$3 mm, in order to observe by uniform magnification without the dependency on the variation of objective distance generated by the depth of wire structure on the reed frame, imaging lens groups should be moved on nonlinear locus like mechanically compensated zoom lenses. The nonlinear equations for zoom locus are derived by using the Gaussian bracket. Refraction powers and positions of each groups are numerically determined by solving the equations, and initial design data for each groups is obtained by using Seidel third order aberration theory. The optimization technique is finally utilized to obtain this microscopic system.

In this study, we proposed modified settling basins transformed by substituting the downstream sill for low head weirs such as generic labyrinth weir and inclined crest labyrinth weir worked as internal baffles. Laboratory experiments were carried out to understand hydraulic characteristics inside of the settling basin to improve the efficiency of sedimentation rate. For a quantitative analysis, we suggested the headwater ratio($H_t/P$), the magnification ratio(L/W) and the inflow rate per total crest length($q_L$) as primary analysis indexes for sedimentation efficiency. Six different types of settling basin were used for labscaled pilot tests by distinguishing with internal structures. Based on results, the variation of headwater ratio with the change of magnification ratio would highly affect the deposition efficiency(%) and it was improved under specific condition that repeating arrange number(N) of labyrinth weir was between 2 and 4. Also, the regression analysis showed that initial condition and shape for improving sedimentation efficiency were plotted on the graph for both $q_L{\geq}3.5cm^2/s$ and $L/W{\leq}3.5$. It would be expected that the geometrically optimized labyrinth settling basin could be designed with proper deposition efficiency for inflow rates of influent and required area of settling basin utilizing the proposed analysis index in this study.
