  • To enhance the competitive edge of the material cost, various techniques lowering the material cost of inverter to drive Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) have been developed. In this paper, the theoretical analysis has been done for the existing techniques such as Jin Balance and O2Micro technique. Especially, How to design the value of magnetizing inductance to meet the specification of the lamp current tolerance between lamps has been disclosed. Based on this result, two kinds of hybrid type balancing techniques have been proposed and analyzed mathematically, Also, the accuracy of the proposed techniques has been verified through Pspice simulation.

  • A new zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) push-pull pulse-width modulation (PWM) converter is proposed in this paper. The wide ZVS condition for all of the switches is obtained by utilizing the energy stored in the output inductor and magnetizing inductance. As a result, the switching losses can be dramatically reduced. A simple auxiliary circuit including two small diodes and one capacitor is added at the secondary side of a high frequency (HF) transformer to reset the primary current during the circulating stage and to clamp the voltage spike across the rectifier diodes, which enables the use of low-voltage and low-cost diodes to reduce the conducting and reverse recovery losses. In addition, there are no active devices or resistors in the auxiliary circuit, which can be realized easily. A detailed steady operation analysis, characteristics, design considerations, experimental results and a loss breakdown are presented for the proposed converter. A 500 W prototype has been constructed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed concept.

  • This paper proposes a compensation method for an air gapped current transformer (CT) in the steady state. An air gapped CT is used in order to reduce a remanent flux in the case of auto-reclosure. It causes larger ratio and angle errors than the closed core CT because the magnetizing inductance of an air-gapped CT is even smaller than the closed-core CT. The core flux is calculated and used to estimate the exciting current in accordance with the hysteresis curve of the air-gapped CT The correct current is obtained by adding the estimated exciting current to the measured secondary current. The performance of the method was investigated for the air gapped CTs with a gap of 0.083mm and 0.249mm for the 120%, 100% and 20% of the rated current. Various test results indicate that the proposed compensation algorithm can improves the accuracy significantly.

  • In order to decrease the size of a switch mode power supply, high switching frequency can be an efficient way to reduce the size of passive components in the converter. In this paper, a 500-kHz high-frequency LLC resonant converter is proposed with an accurate design method of magnetizing inductance, as well as the relationship between the switching frequency and the size of the passive components. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the proposed methods and equations, including the temperature data of each passive and active device of the converter. Using those results, dominant power losses in the prototype converter under 500-kHz high-frequency operation are investigated, compared with the results from a 100-kHz converter. In addition, operating waveforms and power conversion efficiency will be shown to obtain design considerations for the high switching frequency LLC resonant converter.

  • In battery-operated systems, an isolated converter is used to interface the utility grid with the system to increase stability when charging and discharging batteries. Systems such as vehicle-to-grids (V2Gs), on-board chargers, and energy storage systems (ESSs) have recently become popular, and the roles of isolated converters have become important considerations in fabricating such devices. A fixed-frequency LLC converter, which is a type of isolated converter, presents the advantages of high efficiency and high power density by performing zero-voltage switching (ZVS) over wide frequency ranges. However, the magnetizing inductance of the LLC converter should be designed to enable ZVS in all switching devices. Therefore, in this study, the operating characteristics of the LLC circuit are analyzed, and an optimal design method for ZVS operation is established. Moreover, an 8 kW LLC high-efficiency and high-power-density resonant converter is designed and tested for ESS application. The LLC converter achieves 98% efficiency at rated power.

  • When a circuit breaker is opened, a large capacitance around the buses, the circuit breaker and the potential transformer (PT) might cause PT ferroresonance. During PT ferroresonance, the iron core repeats saturation and unsaturation even though the supplied voltage is a rated voltage. This paper describes an analytical analysis of PT ferroresonance in the transient-state. To analyze ferroresonance analytically, the iron core is modelled by a simplified two-segment core model in this paper. Thus, a nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) for the flux linkage is changed into a linear ODE with constant coefficients, which enables an analytical analysis. In this simplified model, each state, which is either saturated or unsaturated state, corresponds to one of the three modes, i.e. overdamping, critical damping and underdamping. The flux linkage and the voltage in each state are obtained analytically by solving the linear ODE with constant coefficients. The proposed transient analysis is effective in the more understanding of ferroresonance and thus can be used to design a ferroresonance prevention or suppression circuit of a PT.

  • This paper presents analysis of Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) using Geometry Based Analytical Model (GBAM), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Fourier Series Model (FSM) with curve fitting technique. Further a Transient Analysis (TA) technique is proposed to corroborate the analysis. The main aim of this paper is to give in depth procedure in developing a Geometry Based Analytical Model of Switched Reluctance Machine which is very accurate and simple. The GBAM is developed for the specifications obtained from the manufacturer and magnetizing characteristic of the material used for the construction. Precise values of the parameters like Magneto Motive Force (MMF), flux linkage, inductance and torque are obtained for various rotor positions taking into account the Fringing Effect (FE). The FEA model is developed using MagNet7.1.1 for the same machine geometry used in GBAM and the results are compared with GBAM. Further another analytical model called Fourier Series Model is developed to justify the accuracy of the results obtained by the methods GBAM and FEA model. A prototype of microcontroller based SRM drive system is constructed for validating the analysis and the results are reported.

  • In this paper, the LLC resonant converter battery charger, using adaptive turn ratio scheme, is proposed to achieve high efficiency and wide range output voltage. The LLC converter high frequency transformer has an adaptively changed turn ratio by the auxiliary control circuitry. As a result, the optimal converter design with a large magnetizing inductance is easily achieved to minimize the conduction and the turn-off losses while providing widely regulated voltage gain capability to properly charge the Li-ion battery. The proposed converter operational principle and the optimal design considerations are illustrated in detail. Finally, several simulation results verify the proposed LLC resonant converter's effectiveness.

  • This Paper Proposes new speed and electromagnetic torque control of an induction motor, which is robust against time varying parameters. The control is based on adaptive vector control with serial block adaptive algorithm. Motor parameters used to estimates slip frequency and electromagnetic torque. Parameters mismatch in the control system detrimentally affects slip frequency estimation and torque response. In order to compensate lot degradation of the responses, an adaptive identifier for the magnetizing inductance and the secondary time constant is introduced. adaptive vector control system consisted of two subsystems, a vector control system realized on synchronous frame and a parameter identification system on stationary frame. the effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by some digital simulations.
