LARGE SCALE MAGNETIC FIELDS IN LENS GALAXIES

  • Differential Faraday Rotation measurements between the images of same background source, of multiply-imaged gravitational lens systems can be effectively used to provide a valuable probe to establish the existence of large-scale ordered magnetic fields in lensing galaxies as well as galaxy clusters. Estimates of the magnetic field in lens galaxies, based on the radio polarization measurements do not appear to show any clear evidence for evolution with redhsift of the coherent large scale magnetic field between redshift of 0.9 and the present epoch. However, our method clearly establishes the presence of coherent large scale magnetic field in giant ellitpical galaxies.

  • This paper presents the replication of a desired vibration response by iterative learning control (ILC) system for a vibration motion replication actuator. The vibration motion replication actuator has parameter uncertainties including system nonlinearity and joint nonlinearity. Vehicle manufacturers worldwide are increasingly relying on road simulation facilities that put simulated loads and stresses on vehicles and subassemblies in order to reduce development time. Road simulation algorithm is the key point of developing road simulation system. With the rapid progress of digital signal processing technology, more complex control algorithms including iterative learning control can be utilized. In this paper, ILC algorithm was utilized to produce simultaneously the six channels of desired responses using the Stewart platform composed of six linear electro-magnetic actuators with Halbach magnet array. The convergence rate and accuracy showed reasonable results to meet the requirement. It shows that the algorithm is acceptable to replicate multi-channel vibration responses.

  • In this paper, a navigation technology of an unmanned vehicle using relative localization and magnetic guidance is proposed. Magnetic guidance system had been developed as a robust autonomous driving technology as long as magnetic fields on the path are detected. Otherwise, if magnetic fields were not detected due to some reasons, the vehicle could not drive. Therefore, in order to overcome the drawback, we propose that relative localization would be combined to magnetic guidance system. To validate the usefulness of the proposed method, a robotic vehicle was set up with the magnetic guidance system and the relative localization. In addition, the unmanned driving test was realized on the road without the magnetic fields so that the proposed method is verified by the experiment.

  • The Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) is developing the Bimodal-tram. The vehicle has a navigation control system (NCS) for automatic driving. The vehicle has to follow a reference path in automatic mode. NCS uses magnetic markers to calculate the vehicle position. The vehicle lane is marked with permanent magnets that are buried in the road. In this purpose, we show the characteristics and the configuration of NCS.

An Observation of the Application of a Magnetic Force to the Bicycle Cushion System and its Nonlinearity (자석 척력의 자전거 쿠션장치 적용 및 비선형성 고찰)

  • This paper describes the dynamical behavior of the bicycle and its nonlinear effect when magnetic repulsive forces are applied to the bicycle cushion system. A finite-element method was used to obtain its reliabilities by comparing the experimental and numerical values and select the proper magnet sizes. The Equivalent spring stiffness values were evaluated in terms of both linear and nonlinear approximations, where the nonlinear effect was specifically investigated for the ride comfort. The corresponding equations of linear and nonlinear motion were derived for the numerical model with three degrees of freedom. Dynamic behaviors were observed when the bicycle ran over a curvilinear road in the form of a sinusoidal curve. The analysis in this paper for the observed nonlinearity of magnetic repulsive forces will be a useful guide to more accurately predict the cushion design for any vehicle system.

  • When an aircraft is taxiing, excitation force is applied according to the shape of the road surface. The sprung mass acceleration caused by the excitation of the road surface negatively affects the feeling of boarding. This paper addresses the verification process of the semi-active control method applied to improve the feeling of boarding. The Magneto-Rheological damper landing gear model is employed alongside the control method. It is a Oleo-Pneumatic damper filled with a fluid having the characteristics of increasing yield stress when subjected to a magnetic field. The control method involves verifying Skyhook Control Type2 developed by Skyhook control. The Sinozuka white noise model that considers runway characteristics was employed for the road surface in the simulation. The runway road surface obtained through this model has stochastic characteristics, so the dynamic characteristics were analyzed by applying Monte-Carlo simulation. A dynamic analysis was conducted by co-simulating the landing gear model made by RecurDyn and the control method designed by Simulink. Simulation results show that the Skyhook Control Type2 method has the best control effect in the low speed range compared to the passive type (without control) and skyhook control.

Heat transfer enhancement in gas tungsten arc welding using azimuthal magnetic fields generated by external current

  • This paper proposes the idea to enhance the heat transfer in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) by using the azimuthal magnetic field. The azimuthal magnetic field generated by the external currents makes the Lorentz force stronger, and consequently improves the heat transfer by the faster flow movement. The enhanced heat transfer might improve the welding performance by increasing the temperature at the workpiece. To validate the proposed idea, a two-dimensional axi-symmetric model of GTAW is built, and the multiphysics simulation of GTAW is carried out. As the analysis result, the distributions of electric current, electromagnetic fields, arc flow velocity, and temperature are investigated. Then, the proposed idea for heat transfer enhancement is validated by comparing the Lorentz force, flow velocity, and temperature distribution with and without azimuthal magnetic fields.

  • Owing to revolutionary developments in automobile technologies, a variety of advanced vehicles - hybrid vehicle, hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, electric vehicle, etc. - emerges recently. The safety is getting more important for developing automobiles. The electro-magnetic compatibility has to be assured, since those advanced vehicles are equipped with various new electronic systems. Electro-magnetic compatibility tests, in general, consist of an EMI(electro-magnetic interference) test and an EMS (electro-magnetic susceptibility) test. We investigated the susceptibility test method suggested in KMVSS (Korean Motor Vehicle Safety Standard) as the EMS test method. A series of experiments results that the above test method should be partially revised to comply with a Korean governmental standard method. In this paper, the some directions of modifications are presented to enhance the quality of the above EMS test method.

Analysis of Bicycle Cushion System by using Repulsive Force of Magnetics (영구자석의 척력을 이용한 자전거 완충장치 해석)

  • One commercial package for magnetic analysis was used to apply repulsive forces of permanent magnetics to bicycle cushion system. Reliabilities of finite element analysis were acquired by comparing with those of experimental measurements. Equivalent spring stiffnesses corresponding to various sizes of magnetics were implemented into the bicycle dynamic model with three degree of freedom. Input force caused at front and rear wheels due to road unevenness was considered in the dynamic model. Dynamic behaviors were observed in terms of vertical displacements of the rider and the front reach as well as pitching displacement of the mass center when the bicycle ran over half-triangular bump. The methodology suggested in this paper by the finite element analysis and numerical model will be an useful tool for more accurate prediction of cushion design for any vehicle system if magnetic forces are utilized.
