  • Magnetic anomalies are sensitive to magnetic properties present in deep Earth and near surface structures. Such geophysical characteristics often can be quantified by numerical analyses. In this study, we developed a finite element method (FEM) approach to compute magnetic anomalies using COMOL $Multiphysics^{(R)}$. This FEM approach was verified by comparing its numerical results with the previously known analytic solution for a uniformly magnetized sphere. Then, we used the method to compute magnetic reversal patterns near mid-ocean ridge with various faulting scenarios. This COMSOL-based approach can be incorporated into advanced multi-physical numerical models to understand the Earth.

  • Recently, patterned magnetic films and elements attract a wide interest due to their technological potentials in ultrahigh-density magnetic recording and spintronic devices. Among those patterned magnetic structures, magnetic anti-dot patterning induces a strong shape anisotropy in the film, which can control the magnetic properties such as coercivity, permeability, magnetization reversal process, and magneto-resistance. While majority of the previous works have been concentrated on anti-dot arrays with a single magnetic layer, there has been little work on multilayered anti-dot arrays. In this work, we report on study of the magnetic properties of bilayered anti-dot system consisting of upper perforated Co layer of 40 nm and lower continuous Ni layer of 5 nm thick, fabricated by photolithography and wet-etching processes. The magnetic hysteresis (M-H) loops were measured with a superconducting-quantum-interference-device (SQUID) magnetometer (Quantum Design: MPMS). For comparison, investigations on continuous Co thin film and single-layer Co anti-dot arrays were also performed. The magnetic-domain configuration has been measured by using a magnetic force microscope (PSIA: XE-100) equipped with magnetic tips (Nanosensors). An external electromagnet was employed while obtaining the MFM images. The MFM images revealed well-defined periodic domain networks which arise owing to the anisotropies such as magnetic uniaxial anisotropy, configurational anisotropy, etc. The inclusion of holes in a uniform magnetic film and the insertion of a uniform thin Ni layer, drastically affected the coercivity as compared with single Co anti-dot array, without severely affecting the saturation magnetization ($M_s$). The observed changes in the magnetic properties are closely related to the patterning that hinders the domain-wall motion as well as to the magneto-anisotropic bilayer structure.

  • This paper presents the results of study of linear oscillating electric machine; Cartesian, cylindrical type with permanent magnet, flux reversal, cylindrical reluctance, and transverse flux type. The focus of the work is the suggestion of the characteristics and design process of propose topology, respectively. First of all, there are five types of the proposed to this study on the basis of the existing literatures; Cartesian type, cylindrical type, flux reversal type, cylindrical reluctance type, and transverse flux type. All topology is achieved using equivalent magnetic circuit considering leakage elements as initial modeling. Cartesian type is investigated by number of phases and number of pole pairs using optimal process. A cylindrical type is described by number of phases and displacement of stroke. The flux reversal type is proposed based on the symmetrical and non symmetrical stator cores of the surface mounted PMs mover, and non slanted PMs and slanted PMs of the flux concentrating PMs mover. A cylindrical reluctance type is studied by the shape of mover teeth in geometric aspect to reduce force ripple and increase magnetic flux. A transverse flux type is considered by dividing the transverse flux electric excited and the transverse flux permanent magnet excited. It is significant that the study gives a design rules and features of linear oscillating electric machine.

  • The magnetic switching volume is known as an important parameter to understand the magnetization reversal process, thermal stability of the written information and media noise. This parameter is influenced significantly by the microstructure of the magnetic layer as well as underlayer. Therefore, we fabricated CoSm/Cr thin films with varying magnetic layer thickness under constant sputtering by using a dc magnetic sputtering machine. The magnetic layer thickness effect on the magnetic switching volume have been studied by the means of magnetic viscosity and dc demagnetization remanence curve mesurements. From these measurements, we found that the switching volumes increased with increasing the magnetic layer thickness, whereas the coercivity showed different behavior. These may be a result of the increased intergranular coupling and the larger volume fraction of the magnetic layer.

  • This study investigated the magnetic properties of $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}/SiO_2$ laminates with shape-induced magnetic anisotropy. The multilayer films were deposited on Si or upilex substrates, from separate $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$ and $SiO_2$ (at %) alloy targets using a rf diode sputtering system. $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}/SiO_2$ laminates with a various number of bilayers (N) were prepared. The laminates with ellipse array patterns were prepared using photolithographic technique. The magnetic properties were measured at room temperature using a B-H hysteresisgraph and a high frequency permeameter. The several steps during domain wall reversal were observed in multilayer films, attributing to inter-magnetic layer coupling. Intrinsic uniaxial anisotropy field increases with N. The experimental values of the total anisotropy field are found to be in good agreement with the calculated values. This study utilized the shape anisotropy of the laminated film objects with small ellipse array patterns to induce a larger uniaxial anisotropy so as to maximize their operating frequency.

  • The influence of thickness on magnetic interaction and magnetic properties in electrodeposited CoPt magnetic films was investigated from the analysis of the magnetic remanence curves and the magnetic hysteresis loops. As the thickness of the CoPt film is increased, the perpendicular coercivity and the saturation magnetization are increased but the squareness is considerably decreased. The analysis results of the magnetic remanence curves and the magnetic hysteresis loops exhibited that the dipolar interaction is the main interaction mechanism for all samples, but the strength of the dipolar interaction gradually increased with increasing sample thickness.
