  • The amorphous state of $NdFe_{10.7}TiB_{0.3}$ and its nanocrystallization have been studied by X-ray diffraction, 모스바우어 spectroscopy, and a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), $NdFe_{10.7}TiB_{0.3}$ amorphous ribbons were fabricated by a sigle-roll melt-spinning method. The average hyperfine field $H_{hf}$(T) of the amorphous state shows a temperature dependence of $[H_{hf}(T)-H_{hf}(0)]/H_{hf}(0)=-0.46(T/T_c)^{3/2}-0.34(T/T_c)^{5/2}$ for $T/T_c<0.7$ indicative of spin wave excitation. The quadrupole splitting just above the Curie temperature $T_c$ is 0.46 mm/s, whereas the average quadrupole shift below $T_c$ is zero. The Curie and crystallization temperatures are determined to be $T_c$=380K and $T_x=490K$, respectively, for a heating rate of 5 K/min. The occupied area of nanocrystalline phase at around 770K is about 65%. Above the Curie temperature, VSM data show magnetic moments increases again. The formation of $\alpha$-Fe is the main reason for the increasing moment as conformed with the 모스바우어 measurements.

  • The relation of ferromagnet anisotropic magnetization and the antiferromagnet atomic spin configuration has been investigated for variously angles of unidirectional deposition magnetic field of FeMn layer in Corning glas/Ta(5 nm)/NiFe(7 nm)/FeMn(25 nm)/ Ta(5 nm) multilayer prepared by ion beam deposition. Three unidirectional deposition angles of FeMn layer are $0^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$, respectively. The exchange bias field ($H_{ex}$) obtained from the measuring easy axis MR loop was decreased to 40 Oe in deposition angle of $45^{\circ}$, and to 0 Oe in the angle of $90^{\circ}$. One other side hand, $H_{ex}$ obtained from the measuring hard axis MR loop was increased to 35 Oe in deposition angle of $45^{\circ}$, and to 79 Oe in the angle of $90^{\circ}$. Although the difference of uniderectional axis between ferromagnet NiFe and antiferromagnet FeMn was 90o, the strong antiferromagnetic dipole moment of FeMn caused to rotate the weak ferromagnetic dipole moment of NiFe in the interface. This result implies that one of origins for exchange coupling mechanism depends on the effect of magnetic field angle during deposition of antiferromgnet FeMn layer.

  • The electronic structures, magnetism, and half-metallicity of the full-Heusler $Co_2TiSn$(001) surfaces have been investigated by using the all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method within the generalized gradient approximation. We have considered both of the Co atoms terminated(Co-term) and the TiSn atoms terminated(TiSn-term) surfaces. From the calculated density of states, we found that the half-metallicity was destroyed at the surface of the Co-term, while the half-metallicity was retained at the TiSn-term. For the surface of the Co-term, due to the reduced coordination number the occupied minority d-states were shifted to high energy regions and that cross the Fermi level, thus destroy the surface half-metallicity. On the other hand the surface states at the surface of the TiSn-term were located just below the Fermi level, which reduces the minority spin-gap with respect to that of the center layer. The calculated magnetic moment of the surface Co atom for the Co-term was increased by 10 % to 1.16 ${\mu}_B$ with respect to that of the inner-layers, while the magnetic moment of the subsurface Co atom in the TiSn-term has almost same value of the innerlayers(1.03 ${\mu}_B$).

  • By substituting Cr in inverse-spinel $Fe_3O_4,\;Cr_xFe_{3-x}O_4$ thin film samples were prepared by sol-gel spin-coating method and their structural electronic, and magnetic properties were analyzed. X-ray diffraction indicates that the lattice constant decrease with increasing Cr composition (x). This result can be explained in terms of occupation of octahedral sites by $Cr^{3+}$ ions with smaller ionic radius than that of $Fe^{3+}$ Vibrating sample magnetometry measurements on the samples at room temperature revealed that saturation magnetization ($M_s$) decrease by Cr substitution, explainable by comparing spin magnetic moment among the related transition-metal ions. A decrease of magnetoresistence effect with x was observed, similar to that of $M_s$. The coercivity of the $Cr_xFe_{3-x}O_4$ films was found to increase with x, attributed to the increase of magnetic anisotropy by the existence of octahedral $Cr^{3+}(d^3)$.

  • Authors investigated neuronal changes of local cellular metabolism in the cerebral lesions of Parkinsonian symptomatic side between before and after stereotactic neurosurgery by follow-up 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) (n = 15) and age-matched normal controls (n = 15) underwen MRS examinations using a stimulated echo acquisition mode (STEAM) pulse sequence that provided 2${\times}$2${\times}$2 ㎤ (8ml) volume of interest in the regions of substantia nigra, thalamus, and lentiform nucleus. Spectral parameters were 20 ms TE, 2000 ms TR, 128 averages,2500 Hz spectral width, and 2048 data points. Raw data were processed by the SAGE data analysis package (GE Medical Systems). Peak areas of N-acetylaspartate (NAA), creatine (Cr), choline-containing compounds (Cho), inositols (Ins), and the sum (Glx) of glutamate and GABA were calculated by means of fitting the spectrum to a summation of Lorentzian curves using Marquardt algorithm. After blindly processed, we evaluated neuronal alterations of observable metabolite ratios between before and after stereotactic neurosurgery using Pearson product-moment analysis (SPSS, Ver. 6.0). A significant reduction of NAA/Cho ratio was observed in the cerebral lesion in substantia nigra of PD patient related to the symptomatic side after neurosurgery (P : 0.03). In thalamus, NAA/Cho ratio was also significantly decreased in the cerebral lesion including the electrode-surgical region (P : 0.03). A significant reduction of NAA/Cho ratio in lentiform nucleus was not oberved, but tended toward significant reduction after neurosurgery (P = 0.08). In particular, remarkable lactate signal was noted from the surgical thalamic lesions of 6 among 8 patients and internal segments of globus pallidus of 6 among 7 patients, respectively. Significant metabolic alterations of NAA/Cho ratio might reflect functional changes of neuropathological processes in the lesion of substantia nigra, thalamus, and lentiform nucleus, and could be a valuable finding fur evaluation of Parkinson's disease after neurosurgery. Increase of lactate signals, being remarkable in surgical lesions, could be consistent with a common consequence of neurosurgical necrosis. Thus, IH MRS could be a useful modality to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic implications fur Parkinsons disease after functional neurosurgery.

  • In this study we investigate the electronic structure and magnetism of transition metal (TM = Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Pd, Ag ) deped ZnO($TM_{0.25}Zn_{0.75}O$), which are expected to have Curie temperature. Full-potential Linearized Augmented Plane Wave(FLAPW) metod is adopted with exchange-correlation potential expressed as general gradient approximation(GGA). The calculated magnetic moments of ($TM_{0.25}Zn_{0.75}O$) are 0.83, 3.03, 4.03, 3.48, 2.47, 1.56, 0.43, 0.75, 0.01 ${\mu}_B$ for TM = Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Pd, Ag, respectively. The nearest neighbor O atom to the transition metal is calculated to have a significant magnetic moment of about 0.1${\mu}_B$, ?? 새 strong hybridization between O-p and TM-d bands. As the results, the systems may have larger magnetic moments in total, compared to the corresponding isolated atoms. The 3d TM doped systems exhibit the half-metallic character except Co, wheres the 4d TM doped systems behave like normal metals and low spin polarization at the Fermi levels.

  • The magnetism of the Fe monolayer on Ir(001) substrate [Fe/Ir(001)] was investigated by the first-principles energy band method. For comparison, the Fe and Ir ordered-alloyed monolayer on Ir(001) [Fe$_{0.5}$Ir$_{0.5}$/Ir(001)] was also considered. The calculated magnetic moments for Fe atoms in Fe/Ir(001) system and Fe$_{0.5}$Ir$_{0.5}$/Ir(001) system are 2.95 and 2.83 bohr magnetons, respectively. The detailed aspects of the magnetism and electronic structures for these systems are discussed with the calculated denisty of states and spin densities. The optimized atomic sites for the overlayer Fe and Ir atoms were determined by the total energy and atomic force calculations. The Fe atoms in Fe/Ir(001) move closer to the substrate Ir layer than the Fe atoms in Fe$_{0.5}$Ir$_{0.5}$/Ir(001) do to the Ir substrate.

  • Novel carbonylruthenium (Ⅲ) complex Cp*Ru(CO)Cl2(2, Cp*=η5-C5Me5) was synthesized by the reaction of [Cp*RuCl2]2(1) with CO in toluene. The effective magnetic moment (Veff=1.81 B.M.) derived from the magnetic susceptibility measurement of the complex (2) was consistent with the presence of one "single" unpaired electron. Dibromocarbonylruthenium (Ⅲ) complex Cp*Ru(CO)Br2(3) was obtained by the reaction of complex (2) with KBr in toluene. Complex (2) was easily reduced by the reaction with phosphine in toluene to give the corresponding Ru (Ⅱ) complex Cp*Ru(CO)(PR3)Cl (4a∼4e, PR3=PMe3, PEt3, PMePh2, PPh3, PCy3).

  • New series of metal complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II) with 4-(p-chlorophenyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)thiosemicarbazide (HCPTS) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic moment, spectra (IR, UV-Vis, $^1H$ NMR, mass and ESR) and thermal studies. The IR data suggest different coordination modes for HCPTS which behaves as a monobasic bidentate with all metal ions except Cu(II) and Zn(II) which acts as a monobasic tridentate. Based on the electronic and magnetic studies, Co(II), Cu(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes have square - planner, Ni(II) has mixed stereochemistry (tetrahedral + square planar), while Zn(II) is tetrahedral. Molar conductance in DMF solution indicates the non-ionic nature of the complexes. The ESR spectra of solid copper(II) complex show $g_{\parallel}$ (2.2221) > $g_{\perp}$ (2.0899) > 2.0023 indicating square-planar structure and the presence of the unpaired electron in the $d_x2_{-y}2$ orbital with significant covalent bond character. The thermal stability and degradation kinetics of the ligand and its metal complexes were studied by TGA and DTA and the kinetic parameters were calculated using Coats-Redfern and Horowitz-Metzger methods. The complexes have more antibacterial activity against some bacteria than the free ligand. However, the ligand has high anticancer activities against HCT116 (human colon carcinoma cell line) and HEPG2 (human liver hepatocellular carcinoma cell line) compared with its complexes.
