  • Diabetes is known to be one of common causes for several types of peripheral nerve damage. Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is a significant complication lowering the quality of life that can be frequently found in diabetes patients. In this study, the metabolomic characteristic of DN and Diabetes was investigated with NMR spectroscopy. The sera samples were collected from DN patients, Diabetes patients, and healthy volunteers. Based on the pair-wise comparison, three metabolites were found to be noticeable: glucose, obviously, was upregulated both in DN patients (DNP) and Diabetes. Citrate is also increased in both diseases. However, the dietary nutrient and biosynthesized metabolite from glucose, ascorbate, was elevated only in DNP, compared to healthy control. The multivariate model of OPLS-DA clearly showed the group separation between healthy control-DNP and healthy control-Diabetes. The most significant metabolites that contributed the group separation included glucose, citrate, ascorbate, and lactate. Lactate did not show the statistical significance of change in t-test while it tends to down-regulated both in DNP and Diabetes. We also conducted the ROC curve analysis to make a multivariate model for discrimination of healthy control and diseases with the identified three metabolites. As a result, the discrimination model between healthy control and DNP (or Diabetes) was successful while the model between DNP and Diabetes was not satisfactory for discrimination. In addition, multiple combinations of lactate and citrate in the OPLS-DA model of healthy control and diabetes group (DNP + Diabetes patients) gave good ROC value of 0.952, which imply these two metabolites could be used for diagnosis of Diabetes without glucose information.

  • In a pressurized water reactor, radioactive corrosion products (CRUD) in primary coolant system are one of the major sources for the occupational radiation exposure of the personnel in a nuclear power plant. Through the recent trend of long term fuel cycle in a nuclear power Plant, radioactive corrosion products deposited in reactor core for a long time are also the cause of Axial Offset Anomaly (AOA) having m effect on reactor power by the hideout of boron. CRUD consist primarily of magnetite, nickel ferrite, cobalt ferrite, and so on. They have the characteristic of strong magnetism. Therefore it is performed the conceptual design to develop the filter which removes the CRUD by magnetic field that is generated by an arrangement of permanent and electric magnets. Contrary to the conventional filter, the proposed filter does not interrupt the fluid flow, so there is little pressure drop and it can be used continuously. It is expected to be applied as one of the technologies for removal of the CRUB.

  • Coated conductors suitable for the fabrication of persistent mode high $T_c$ magnets are suggested and the fabrication method of persistent mode magnets using coated conductor are demonstrated. Persistent current was observed in a small piece of coated conductor. Closed loop of coated conductor with a diameter of around 1 em was successfully prepared and was cooled with a magnetic field of about 500 Gauss in order to induce supercurrent. Coated conductor with a $I_c$ of 100 A/cm-width was used for the preparation of closed loop of coated conductor. Persistent current was confirmed by measuring the magnetic field generated from closed loop of coated conductor by using Gauss meter. Magnetic field of 4.4 Gauss was detected from the supercurrent of closed loop of coated conductor. It shows that superconducting joint of coated conductor is not a prerequisite for the construction of persistent mode magnets. It is thought that this work opens the possibility to use coated conductor for the construction of persistent mode high $T_c$ magnets for MRI, NMR and magnetic separation applications.

  • The structure of a 2D grid-like copper(II) complex [Cu$(NCO)_2$(pyz)](pyz=pyrazine) (1) consists of 1D chains of Cu-pyz units connected by double end-on (EO) cyanato bridges. Each Cu(II) ion has a distorted octahedral coordination, completed by the four EO cyanato and two pyrazine ligands. Magnetic interactions through EO cyanato and pyrazine bridges in 1 are discussed on the basis of DFT broken-symmetry calculations at the B3LYP level. For model dicopper(II) complexes I (bridged by cyanato) and II (bridged by pyrazine), electronic structure calculations reproduce very well the experimental couplings for the S = 1/2 ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange-coupled 2D system: the calculated exchange parameters J are +1.25 $cm^{-1}$ and -3.07 $cm^{-1}$ for I and II, respectively. The $\sigma$ orbital interactions between the Cu $x^2-y^2$ magnetic orbitals and the nitrogen lone-pair orbitals of pyrazine are analyzed from the viewpoint of through-bond interaction. The energy splitting of 0.106 eV between two SOMOs indicates that the superexchange interaction should be antiferromagnetic in II. On the other hand, there are no bridging orbitals that efficiently connect the two copper(II) magnetic orbitals in I because the HOMOs of the basal-apical NCO bridge do not play a role in the formation of overlap interaction pathway. The energy separation in the pair of SOMOs of I is calculated to be very small (0.054 eV). This result is consistent with the occurrence of weakly ferromagnetic properties in I.

  • It has been established that the acoustic mode parameters of the Sun and Sun-like stars vary over activity cycles. Since the observed variations are not consistent with an activity-related origin, even Sun-like stars showing out-of-phase changes of mode frequencies and amplitudes need to be carefully studied using other observational quantities. In order to test whether the presumed relations between the global seismic parameters are a signature of the stellar activity cycle, we analyze the photometric light curve of HD 49933 for which the first direct detection of an asteroseismic signature for activity-induced variations in a Sun-like star was made, using observations by the CoRoT space telescope. We find that the amplitude of the envelope significantly anti-correlates with both the maximum frequency of the envelope and the width of the envelope unless superflare-like events completely contaminate the light curve. However, even though the photometric proxy for stellar magnetic activity appears to show relations with the global asteroseismic parameters, they are statistically insignificant. Therefore, we conclude that the global asteroseismic parameters can be utilized in cross-checking asteroseismic detections of activity-related variations in Sun-like stars, and that it is probably less secure and effective to construct a photometric magnetic activity proxy to indirectly correlate the global asteroseismic parameters. Finally, we seismically estimate the mass of HD 49933 based on our determination of the large separation of HD 49933 with evolutionary tracks computed by the MESA code and find a value of about 1.2M and a sub-solar metallicity of Z = 0.008, which agrees with the current consensus and with asteroseismic and non-asteroseismic data.

  • In this study, we synthesized mesoporous carbon (Carbonized Ni-FDU-15) containing nanoporous structures and magnetic nanoparticles. Carbonized Ni-FDU-15 was synthesized via evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) and direct carbonization by using a triblock copolymer (F127) as a structure-directing agent, a resol precursor as a carbon-pore wall forming material, and nickel (II) nitrate as a metal ion source. The mesoporous carbon has a well-ordered two-dimensional hexagonal structure. Meanwhile, nickel (Ni) metal and nickel oxide (NiO) were produced in the magnetic nanoparticles in the pore wall. The size of the nanoparticles was about 37 nm. The surface area, pore size and pore volume of Carbonized Ni-FDU-15 were $558m^2g^{-1}$, $22.5{\AA}$ and $0.5cm^3g^{-1}$, respectively. Carbonized Ni-FDU-15 was found to move in the direction of magnetic force when magnetic force was externally applied. The magnetic nanoparticle-bearing mesoporous carbons are expected to have high applicability in a wide variety of applications such as adsorption/separation, magnetic storage media, ferrofluid, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and drug targeting, etc.

  • This paper presents a new implementation method of the pulsed NMR(nuclear magnetic resonance) apparatus, which contains a single coil in a magnet console, to detect a NMR signal. Applying an RF magnetic field of 5MHz to the magnet console which is designed to have Larmor frequency of 5MHz for hydrogen atom, the hydrogen NMR signal was obtained from the glycerin which was put in the magnet console as a sample. The DC magnetic field in the magnet console was implemented with a permanent magnet of 1168 gauss and the RF magnetic field was generated appling an RF signal with the frequency of 5MHz and the current magnitude of 8A to a coil of 5.73${\mu}$H. The magnitude of the NMR signal was maximum when the RF magnetic field was generated for 2.8 ${\mu}$sec, and the period of generating the RF magnetic field was designed to 100msec for detecting the NMR signal repeatedly. The NMR signal, radiated from the sample in the magnetic console, was appeared as an amplitude-modulated signal with a frequency equal to the Larmor frequency. The signal, induced in the coil, was amplified in the tx/rx separation circuit, preamplifier and intermediate amplifier by a factor of 20.7dB, 36dB and 40dB, respectively, and the signal was detected by a synchronous detection circuits, then the NMR signal was obtained.

  • The novelty of this study resides in a 6"-wafer-level microfabrication protocol for a microdevice with a fluidic control system for the separation of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from human whole blood cells. The microdevice utilizes a lateral magnetophoresis method based on immunomagnetic nanobeads with anti-epithelial cell adhesive molecule antibodies that selectively bind to epithelial cancer cells. The device consists of a top polydimethylsiloxane substrate for microfluidic control and a bottom substrate for lateral magnetophoretic force generation with embedded v-shaped soft magnetic microwires. The microdevice can isolate about 93% of the spiked cancer cells (MCF-7, a breast cancer cell line) at a flow rate of 40/100 mL/min with respect to a whole human blood/buffer solution. For all isolation, it takes only 10 min to process 400 mL of whole human blood. The fabrication method is sufficiently simple and easy, allowing the microdevice to be a mass-producible clinical tool for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and personalized medicine.

  • Induction motors widely use in industry because structure is simple and hard and cost is generally cheap and they are easy to control. In recently, because of saving steel, ventilation and benefit of frame fixing, rectangular core type induction motors use in industry more and more. This paper presents current characteristic according to stator core cutting degree in three-phase induction motor (IM) with rectangular stator core. According to stator cutting degree, magnetic saturation and paths of flux are changed. Because of these situations, phase currents are unbalance and are produced harmonic components and they cause decrease of efficiency. We analyze each $10^{\circ}$ from $0^{\circ}$ to $30^{\circ}$ using 2-D finite element analysis (FEA). Optimal stator cutting core degree selection supplies stable currents and efficiency improvement. In this paper, loss separation test was executed by IEEE Std. 112-98 Method B and we compare with the result of loss separation by Simulation using FEM and by Experiment.
