  • A HEV evaluation program, funded by ADEME, was carried out by a group of Laboratories of different specialties in order to evaluate and compare consumption, emission and component technologies of the three first HEVs put on the market (Toyota Prius, Nissan Tino and Honda Insight). This paper presents the results obtained until now. These results show good consumption and emission performance of the tested vehicles compared to conventional ones. The energy management seems to be globally the same for the three vehicles excepting for cold stans where the Insight allows a very earlier stop of the engine compared to the Tino and especially to the Prius. A mapping of the engine consumption of the Prius and the Insight was performed in order to furnish data for the simulation models. The Permanent Magnet motors of the Prius and Tino have different number of pair poles and then different emf at a given speed. The low emf values of the Prius allow operation at high speed with less field weakening control than for the Tino. The inverters of the Prius and the Tino, controlled by a PWM at respectively 5 kHz and 7 kHz switching frequency, are made of IGBTs with high commutation performances.

  • 10kW wind turbine is widely studied in the field of renewable energy for the merits of easy installation to the confined area such as hill, park and urban areas. The performance of various electrical devices such as converter and inverter in the wind turbine system should be systematically analyzed for various wind speeds. However, it is impossible to apply these devices directly to practical wind turbine system for the safety of wind turbine system. Therefore, it is required to develop torque simulator which can generate corresponding torque according to its wind speed. In this work, 10kW torque simulator which consists of three phase torque control inverter, 3 phase induction motor and PMSG(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator) is developed.

  • Precisely refined Mossbauer study and nano structure observation revealed that intergranular phase formed between a-Fe and Nd₂Fe14B phase in NdFeNbB alloys plays a significant role on the magnetic properties. The intergranular interaction was characterized in term of Henkel Plot (δM plot), and hyperfine field, quardrupole splitting and isomer shift were refined to predict the presence and role of the intergranular phase. By the addition of Nb into Nd8Fe86B6 composition, coercivity was found to increase by 25% due to the refinement of average grain size of both the soft and hard magnetic phases which was decreased from 50 nm of virgin Nd/sub 8/Fe/sub 86/B/sub 6/ to 25 nm in Nd8Fe 85Nb₁B6 alloys. The role of Nb addition was confirmed to stabilize the Nd₂Fe14B lattice preventing from thermal vibration of the corresponding sites substituted Fe by Nb atoms in all sites in the Nd₂Fe14B lattice. The enhanced coercivity was originated from the exchange hardening of soft and amorphous phases surrounding the hard magnetic Nd₂Fe14B crystal.

  • To get the constant output, synchronous generator field excitation is controlled by AVR(Automatic Voltage Regulator). Most of ships generator AVR uses the thyristor phase controlled rectifier. However this rectifier is difficult to realize that the fast control system because its control period is slower than MOSFET and IGBT type converter. Therefore, this paper deals with PMG(Permanent Magnet Generator) type digital AVR using MOSFET switch for ships synchronous generator. The composition of this digital AVR is very simple, the generator is under the short circuit accident, the output voltage becomes zero state and AVR can not operate. Thus generator is required to add CBC(Current Boosting Circuit) in an excitation circuit to flow output current. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated on a 10[kVA] experimental prototype circuit in place of real ships generator.

  • Superconductor flywheel energy storage system (SFESs) is an electro-mechanical battery with high energy storage density, long life, and good environmental affinity. SFESs have been developed for application to a regenerative power of train, the storage of distributed power sources such as solar and wind power, and a power quality improvement. As superconductor bearing is completely passive, it is not necessary to control a system elaborately but accurate analysis in mechanical properties of the HTS bearing is very important for application to SFESs. Stiffness and damping properties are the main index for evaluation the capacity of HTS bearings and make it possible to adjust rotordynamic properties while operating the rotor-bearing system. The superconductor bearing consists of a stator containing single grain YBCO bulks, a ring-type permanent magnet rotor with a strong magnetic field that can reach the bulk surface, and a bearing support for assembly to SFESs frame. In this study, we investigated the stiffness and damping properties of superconductor bearings in 35 kWh SFESs. Finally, we found that 35 kWh superconductor bearing has uniform stiffness properties depend on the various orientations of rotor vibration. We discovered total damping coefficient of superconductor bearing is affected by not only magnetic damping in superconductor bulk but also external damping in bearing support. From the results, it is confirmed that the conducted evaluation can considerably improve energy storage efficiency of the SFESs, and these results can be used for the optimal capacity of superconductor bearings of the SFESs.

  • Magnetic materials has been applied to various fields due to their energy convertible properties between electrical and mechanical energy. Particularly, permanent magnets have been currently attracted much attention because they produce external magnetic field without any electrical current. For high efficiency, a demand for permanent magnets containing rare earth elements has been continuously increased, which abruptly raises the price and causes the supply difficulty of rare earth materials. Therefore, the development of permanent magnets with less or without rare earth elements become a urgent issue. In this report, the current trend and major issues on high efficiency permanent magnets, particularly exchange-coupling magnets, are discussed.

  • Soft magnetic composite (SMC) materials based on powder metallurgy have a number of advantages over the conventional electrical steel sheets commonly used in electric machines. Thus, technologies related to these materials have shown significant improvement in recent years. In general, SMCs are magnetically isotropic owing to the shape of the powder, which makes them suitable for the construction of electric machines with three-dimensional flux and complex structures. However, the materials with isotropic magnetic properties (such as SMCs) have complex vector hysteresis; thus, it is very difficult to predict accurate loss properties. Therefore, we manufactured ring-type specimens of electrical steel sheets and SMC, which analyzed their magnetic properties according to the specimen size, and performed the electromagnetic field analysis of a high-speed permanent magnet (PM) motor driven at 800 Hz or higher using the measured magnetic information to compare the core loss of the motor. The reliability of this paper has been verified by measuring the efficiency after manufacturing the motor.

  • The electrical/thermal stabilities and magnetic field controllability of a no-insulation (NI) high-temperature superconducting magnet are characterized by contact resistance between turn-to-turn layers, and the contact resistance characteristics are determined by properties of conductor surface and winding tension. In order to accurately predict the electromagnetic characteristics of the NI coil in a design stage, it is necessary to control the contact resistance characteristics within the design target parameters. In this paper, the contact resistance and critical current characteristics of a rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) conductor were measured to analyze the effects of surface treatment conditions (roughness and oxidation level) of the copper stabilizer layer in REBCO conductor. The test samples with different surface roughness and oxidation levels were fabricated and conductor surface analysis was performed using scanning electron microscope, alpha step surface profiler and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Moreover, the contact resistance and critical current characteristics of the samples were measured using the four-terminal method in a liquid nitrogen impregnated cooling environment. Compared with as-received REBCO conductor sample, the contact resistance values of the REBCO conductors, which were post-treated by the scratch and oxidation of the surface of the copper stabilizer layer, tended to increase, and the critical current values were decreased under certain roughness and oxidation conditions.

  • A high speed NMR quality evaluation sensor was designed , constructed and tested . The device consists of an NMR spectrometer coupled to a conveyor system. The conveyor was run at speeds ranging from 0 to 250 mm/s. Spectral of avocado fruits and one-dimensional magnetic resonance images of pickled olives were acquired while the samples were moving on a conveyor belt mounted through a 20Tesla NMR magnet with a 20 mm diameter surface coil and a 150 mm diameter imaging coil respectively. Fro a magnetic resonance spectrum analysis, motion through variations in the magnetic field tends to narrow spectral line width just like using sample rotation in high resolution NMR to narrow spectral line width. Spectrum analysis was used to detect the dry weight of avocado fruits using the ratio oil and water resonance peaks. Good correlations maximum r=0.970@ 50 mm/s and minimum r=0.894@250mm/s ) between oil and water resonance peak ratio and dry weight of avocados were observed at speeds ra ging from0 to 250mm/s. For the application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method, the projections were used to distinguish between pitted and non-pitted olives . Effect of fruit position in the coil was tested and coil degree effects were noticed when projects were generated under dynamic conditions. Various belt speeds (up to 250mm/s) were tested and detection results were compared to static measurements. Higher classification errors were occurred at dynamic conditions compared to errors while olives were at rest.
