  • This paper investigates the distortion of magnetic field of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor due to deformed rubber magnet. Global or local deformation of rubber magnet in the BLDC motor is mathematically modeled by using the Fourier series. Distorted magnetic field is calculated by using the finite element method, and unbalanced magnetic force are calculated by using the Maxwell stress tensor. The first harmonic deformation in the global deformation of rubber magnet generates the first harmonic driving frequency of the unbalanced magnetic force, and the rest harmonic deformations of rubber magnet except the harmonic deformation with multiple of common divisor of pole and slot introduces the driving frequencies with multiple of slot number ${\pm}1$ to the unbalanced magnetic force. However, the harmonic deformation with multiple of common divisor of pole and slot does not generate unbalanced magnetic force due to the rotational symmetry. When the rubber magnet is locally deformed, the unbalanced magnetic force has the first harmonic driving frequency and the driving frequencies with multiples of slot number ${\pm}1$.

  • A conduction-cooled superconducting magnet system is developed for material separation. The superconducting magnet for material separation has to be designed to have a strong magnetic field in a control volume. Since the magnetic field gradient is larger at the end rather than at the center of the magnet, we developed a design method to optimize the superconducting magnet for material separation. The safety of the superconducting magnet is evaluated, taking into account the electro-magnetic field, heat and structure. The superconducting coil is successfully wound by the wet-winding method. The superconducting coil is installed in a cryostat maintaining high vacuum, and cooled down to approximately 4 K by a two-stage GM cryocooler. The performance of the conduction-cooled superconducting magnet system is discussed with respect to the supplied current, cooling medium and cooling power of a cryocooler.

  • This paper describes an optimal design method which is applied a weighted least square (WLS) method for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system. An optimal design approach is presented for a homogeneity superconducting magnet with the superconducting active shield especially for a magnetic resonance imaging system. The WLS is used to obtain the optimal configurations using the least amount and minimum volume of conductor, exhibiting the smallest level of field inhomogeneity and resulting in the least level of stray field. The proposed model is used to design a multiple-shield configuration for a 1.5 T MRI magnet. The field homogeneity is required less than 5 gauss stray field contour within 4m axially and 3m radially from origin. The designed magnet with the actively magnetic shielding coil out of main coils is analyzed by FEM and theoretical analysis method, investigated the field homogeneity.

  • In recent years, high-temperature superconductor (HTS) Quadruple Triplets are being developed for heavy ion accelerators, because the HTS magnets are suitable to withstand radiation and high heat loads in the hot cell of accelerators. Generally, an iron yoke, which costs a mass of material, was employed to enhance the magnetic field when a quadrupole magnet was designed. The type of the magnet is called iron-dominated magnet, because the total magnetic field was mainly induced by the iron. However, in the HTS superconductor iron-dominated magnets, the coil-induced field also can have a certain proportion. Therefore, the air-core HTS quadrupole magnets can be considered instead of the iron-core HTS quadrupole magnet to be employed to save the iron material. This study presents the design of an air-core HTS quadruple triplet which consists three by air-core HTS quadruple magnet and compare the design result with that of an iron-core HTS quadruple triplet. First, the characteristics of an air-core HTS quadrupole magnet were analyzed to select the magnet system for the magnetic field uniformity impairment. Then, the field uniformity was improved(< 0.1%) exactly using evolution strategy (ES) method for each iron-core HTS quadrupole magnet and the air-core HTS quadruple triplet was established. Finally, the designed air-core triplet was compared with the iron-core HTS quadruple triplet, and the results of beam trajectories were presented with both the HTS quadruple triplet systems to show that the air-core triplet can be employed instead of the iron-core HTS triplet. The design of the air-core quadruple triplet was suggested for a heavy ion accelerator.

  • Shimming is an important technique in development of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) magnets where image resolution is highly dependent on magnetic field homogeneity. Classically, shimming may be categorized into two types: 1) active shimming that incorporates with extra coils and precise tuning of their currents; and 2)passive shimming that incorporates with pieces of steel placed in a bore of a main magnet and their uniform magnetization under homogeneous external fields. Additional magnetic fields, produced by the coils and/or the steel sheets, compensate original magnetic field from the main magnet in such a way that the total field becomes more homogeneous. In this paper, we developed a passive shimming method based on linear programming optimization. Linear programming is well known to be highly efficient to find a global minimum in various linear problems. We firstly confirmed the linearity of magnetization of ferromagnetic pieces under a presence of external magnetic fields. Then, we adopted the linear programming to find optimized allocation of the steel pieces in the inner bore of a main magnet to improve field homogeneity.

  • To develop a stirring device that can automatically measure the viscosity of a fluid, the impeller type of the device must be recognized without making contact. In this study, we propose a method to discriminate the type of impellers using the changes in the magnetic field. Permanent magnets are inserted into a hollow hole of the impellers, and the change of the magnetic field is measured by a hall sensor. All experimental results are compared with the FEM analysis results. The results show that with the increase in diameter and length of the magnet inserted into the impeller, the magnitude of the magnetic flux density increases. The magnetic field is more sensitive to the change in the magnet diameter than to the change in magnet length. In order to reduce the machining costs, however, it is advantageous to change the magnet length instead of the magnet diameter.

  • The voltage induced in the superconducting background magnet system is analyzed according to the calculation of self inductance and mutual inductance. The voltage induced by blip and compensation coils of the background magnet system is about 6.4V. In order to charge the main background magnet, the power supply must provide the minimum voltage of 1.1 kV. the compensation coils have an influence on the field distribution. The compensation coils result in the decreasing center field about 2.67%. It can remarkably decrease the ac losses and the voltage on the current leads of the background magnet.

  • Most important study on development of high-Tc superconducting magnet is magnetic properties with design conditions To study optimal design condition of high-Tc superconducting magnet, small size solenoid magnet was designed and simulated. Design conditions are radius of bobbin, radius of magnet, length of magnet, critical cur-rent and notch size. We know that intensity of magnetic fields was controled by critical current and uniformity of magnetic fields was controled by notch size. The optimal design conditions to get the high intensity and uniformity of magnetic field in this experiments were radius of bobbin=3[cm], radius of magnetic=12[cm], length of Z=10[cm], notch size=6[cm] and critical current=12[A].

  • As known generally, when permanent magnets whose poles are upward and downward in order, arranged into the circumferential direction rotate under the conducting plate, the rotating force acts on the plate as well as the repulsive force. If the magnetic field by the magnet wheel(the above rotating permanent magnets) is partially shielded, the magnet wheel over open region can be a linear induction motor. The distinct feature from induction motor is that the traveling magnet field is produced by the moving permanent magnet instead of ac current. Furthermore, a variation of the open region changes the direction of the thrust force. In this paper, we introduce a concept of the linear actuator using the magnet wheel. Under the above shielding condition, a few simulation results and its verification from a simple test setup are described.
