Co and Fe doped multi-wall carbon nano-tubes (MWCNTs) synthesized by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique are investigated with synchrotron radiations at Pohang Light Source (PAL) and European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). Near edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS) measurement at C K, Co $L_{3,2}$ and Fe $L_{3,2}$-edges, and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at Co and Fe $L_{3,2}$-edges have been carried at 7B1 XAS KIST and 2A MS beamline, respectively, to understand the electronic structure and responsible magnetic interactions at room temperature. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at C K-edge shows significant p-bonding and Co and Fe L-edges proves the presence of $Co^{2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}$ in octahedral symmetry. Co and Fe doped MWCNTs show good XMCD spectra at 300K. The effect on the magnetism is also studied through swift heavy ion (SHI) radiations and magnetism is found enhanced and change in the electronic structure in Co-CNTs is investigated.

The rapid prototyping (RP) technology has been advanced for various applications such as verification of design, functional test. However, many RP machines still have low accuracy and limitation of applications for various materials. In this research, a hybrid RP system was developed to improve precision of micro parts. This hybrid system consists of deposition and material removal process by mechanical micro machining to fabricate nano composites using photo-curable polymer resin with various nano particles. In this work, using hybrid RP process with Multi-Walled Carbon Nano Tube (MWCNT) and hydroxyapatite, micro parts were fabricated. The precision of parts was evaluated based on the original CAD design, and to see the effect of nano particles on mechanical properties, tensile strength was measured. From the results of experiments, it was confirmed that the part made by hybrid process had higher precision, and the addition of nano particles improved mechanical properties.

The high Young's modulus and tensile strength of carbon nanotubes has attracted great attention from the research community given the potential for developing super-strong, super-stiff composites with carbon nanotube reinforcements. Over the decades, the strength and stiffness of carbon nanotube-reinforced polymer nanocomposites have been researched extensively. However, unfortunately, such strong composite materials have not been developed yet. It has been reported that the efficiency of load transfer in such systems is critically dependent on the quality of adhesion between the nanotubes and the polymer chains. In addition, the waviness and orientation of the nanotubes embedded in a matrix reduce the reinforcement effectiveness. In this study, we carried out performed micromechanics-based numerical modeling and analysis by varying the geometry of carbon nanotubes including their aspect ratio, orientation, and waviness. The results of this analysis allow for a better understanding of the load transfer capabilities of carbon nanotube-reinforced polymer composites.

Application of nanotechnology can be used to tailor made cementitious composites owing to small dimension and physical behaviour of resulting hydration products. Because of high aspect ratio and extremely high strength, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are perfect reinforcing materials. Hence, there is a great prospect to use CNTs in developing new generation cementitious materials. In the present paper, a parametric study has been conducted on cementitious composites reinforced by two types of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) designated as Type I CNT (10-20 nm outer dia.) and Type II CNT (30-50 nm outer dia.) with various concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 0.5% by weight of cement. To evaluate important properties such as flexural strength, strain to failure, elastic modulus and modulus of toughness of the CNT admixed specimens at different curing periods, flexural bending tests were performed. Results show that composites with Type II CNTs gave more strength as compared to Type I CNTs. The highest increase in strength (flexural and compressive) is of the order of 22% and 33%, respectively, compared to control samples. Modulus of toughness at 28 days showed highest improvement of 265% for Type II 0.3% CNT composites. It is obvious that an optimum percentage of CNT could exists for composites to achieve suitable reinforcement behaviour and desired strength properties. Based on the parametric study, a tentative optimum CNT concentration (0.3% by weight of cement) has been proposed. Scanning electron microscope image shows perfect crack bridging mechanism; several of the CNTs were shown to act as crack arrestors across fine cracks along with some CNTs breakage.

This study evaluated the mechanical and electrical properties of low-cement mortar using a large amount of industrial by-products to reduce carbon emissions from the cement industry. As types of industrial by-products, blast furnace slag and fly ash, which are representative materials, were used, and ultra-high fly ash was mixed and evaluated to solve the problem of initial strength loss. In addition, in order to evaluate the electrical properties, 1% of MWCNT was incorporated relative to the powder mass. As experimental items, the compressive strength was measured on the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 28th days of age, and the rate of change in electrical resistance was measured on the 28th day of age. As a result of the experiment, the initial strength of the test specimen mixed with blast furnace slag and fly ash was significantly lower than that of 100% cement, and the specimen mixed with blast furnace slag showed strength equal to that of cement at 28 days of age. As an electrical characteristic, the electrical resistance was reduced when the load was loaded, and this reason is judged to be the effect of improving the conductivity as the connection between CNTs is narrowed by the compressive load.

Blood circulation is one of the most important life support functions of our body. It is essential to maintain healthy blood circulation as problems with blood circulation can lead to numerous diseases and serious complications. This study developed women's leggings with gradual compression and soft surface heating functions to improve blood circulation, and evaluated their performance and wearability. A silicon print pattern was developed to provide gradual compression, and a flexible heating surface coated with MWCNT (multi-walled carbon nanotube) conductive ink was fabricated for comfort and thermal effect. For the design, incision lines and materials were applied in consideration of aesthetic aspects, and design lines and colors were altered using a 3D program. The developed leggings showed that blood circulation can be improved when gradual compression and heating functions are simultaneously applied. Results were confirmed through measurements of clothing pressure, blood flow, and surface temperature. In the subjective wearability evaluation, it was confirmed that wearers felt gradual pressure, and they showed high satisfaction with wearability and design.

Millimeter-scale aligned arrays of thin-multiwalled carbon nanotube (t-MWCNT) on layered Si substrates have been synthesized by oxygen-assisted microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD). We have succeeded in growth of vertically aligned MWCNTs up to 2.7 mm in height for 150 min. The effect of $O_2$ and water vapour on growth rate was systematically investigated. In the case of $O_2$ gas, the growth rate was ${\sim}22{\mu}m/min$, which is outstanding growth rate comparing with those of conventional thermal CVD (TCVD). Scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and Raman spectroscopy were used to analyze the CNT morphology, composition and growth mechanism. The role of $O_2$ gas during the CNT growth was discussed on.

The composite anodes of expanded graphite (EG) and multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) for microbial fuel cells were fabricated by using coal tar pitch (CTP) binder containing nickel (Ni), and the effect of the anodes with the binders on the performance of the MFCs were examined in a batch reactor. During the start-up of the MFCs, quick increase in voltage was observed after a short lag phase time, indicating that the CTP binder is biocompatible. The biomass attatched on the anode surface was more at higher Ni content in the binder, as well as at smaller amount of CTP binder for the fabrication of the anode. The internal resistance of the MFC was smaller for the anode with more biomass. Based on the results, the ideal combination of CTP and Ni for the CTP binder for anode was 2 g and 0.2 g, respectively. The maximum power density was $731.8mW/m^2$, which was higher 23.7% than the anode with Nafion binder as control. The CTP binder containing Ni for the fabrication of anode is a good alternative in terms of performance and economics of MFCs.

The composite anodes of exfoliated graphite (EG) and multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) were fabricated by using the binders with different content of epoxy in Nafion solution. The influence of the epoxy content in the anode binder on the performance of microbial fuel cell (MFC) was examined in a batch reactor. With the increase in the epoxy content in the anode binder, increase in physical binding force was observed, but at the same time an increase in the internal resistance of MFC was also observed. This was due to the increase in activation and ohmic resistance. For the anode binder without epoxy, the maximum power density was $1,892mW/m^2$, but a decrease in maximum power density was observed with the increase in the epoxy content in the anode binder. With the epoxy content of 50% in the anode binder, a decrease in the maximum power density to $1,425mW/m^2$ was observed, which about 75.3% of the anode binder without epoxy is. However, the material consisting of the same amount of epoxy and Nafion solution is a good alternative for anode binder in terms of durability and economics of MFC.

The physicochemical properties of manufactured nanomaterials can vary depending upon the methods of manufacture, although the utilized raw materials are same. Hence, the toxicity can also vary based on the methods of nanomaterials manufacture. In this study, we compared the toxicity effect of two types of CNTs (MWCNT, multi-walled carbon nanotube; SWCNT, single-walled carbon nanotube) that differ in length and wall number. In case of MWCNTs, inflammatory responses were more strongly induced in longer groups, whereas body weights more clearly decreased in shorter groups. SWCNT significantly decreased the relative weights of brain and kidney, and the inflow of immune cells and the hematological changes were observed significantly on day 1 and day 7 after exposure, respectively. Our results showed that the length and wall number of CNTs can serve as critical factors in the exhibited inflammation and toxicity.
