  • Recently, the Internet of Things is attracting attention as an important key technology of the 4th Industrial Revolution, and SW education using physical computing is suggested as a good alternative to supplement the problems raised by beginners in programming education. Among the many teaching tools that can be used for physical computing education, MODI is a modular manufacturing tool that anyone can easily assemble like Lego. MODI is a teaching tool that can improve learners' achievement by linking a self-linked block-type code editor called MODI Studio to lay the foundation for programming in a relatively small amount of time and immediately check the results in person. In this paper, a physical computing education method using MODI was designed to be applied to basic programming courses for programming beginners and applied to after-school classes for middle school students. As a result, it was found that students' interest and satisfaction were much higher in physical computing classes using MODI than in text-based programming classes. It can be seen that physical computing education that allows beginners to see and feel the results in person is more effective than grammar-oriented text programming, and it can have a positive effect on improving basic programming skills by increasing students' participation.

  • In this study, a Masked Omni-Directional Integration(MODI) method for pressure calculation is proposed using the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) data. To obtain the velocity field, the Affine PIV method was adopted. Synthetic images were generated for a solid body rotation. Calculation on the pressure was based on the Navier-Stokes equation. The results obtained by the MODI were compared with those obtained by theoretical pressure and by the Omni-Directional Integration(ODI) method. It was shown that the minimum error by the proposed MODI method was attained when the mask size was 1.

  • This study is concerned with the hydraulic experiments of Modi Khola Hydroelectric in Nepal. The experimental domain consists of the intake structure and the settling basin. The intake structure was made by the undistorted model with the scale of 1:20, the settling basin by the distorted model with the scale of 1:10(vertical) and 1:15(horizontal). Based on the movable bed model theory, the 'Anthracite'($\rho_s$ =1.48) is chosen as a model material. According to the model tests, the installation of the guide wall with proper height and the proper control of the flushing gate are required for the effective flushing in the intake structure. In the settling basin a more proper design of the inlet in order to constrain the turbulence flow is required for an efficient sedimentation and the installation of another flushing pipe near the maximum sedimental area is required. Since the trap efficiency is measured about 95%, it is concluded that the design of the settling basin is proper.

  • The z-transform method is a basic mathematical tool in analyzing and designing sampled-data control systems. However, since the z-transform method relates only the sampling-instants signals, another mathematical tool is necessary to describe the continous signals between the sampling instants. For this purpose the delayed and the modi fled z-transform methods were developed. The definition of the modi fled z-transform includes a sample in the interval [-T,0] of the original signal in its series expression, where the signal value is always zero for any physical system. From this reason one step skew of the time index always appears in its application formulas. This introduces an unnecessary operation and a gap in linking the mathematical formula and its physical interpretation. Considering the conceptual difficulty and application inconvenience, a method of using the advanced z-transform in analysis of sampled-data control systems is developed as a replacement of the modi fled z-transform. With one formulation of the advanced z-transform, now it is possible to relate both the signals of the sampling instants and those in between without any complication and conceptual difficulty.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the teaching and learning process of physical computing using coding block for elementary gifted students in science. In order to obtain implications for teaching physical computing, we set the learning objectives from the Computer and Information Literacy Evaluation Standards developed by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement(IEA) and developed a teaching and learning program for physical computing through collaboration between science education and computer education experts according to learning objectives. The developed program was related to the use of the coding block MODI(TM) and 32 classes of physical computing instruction were conducted for 15 students of the 4th to 6th grade who belong to an education institute for the gifted in science affiliated to the University. In the physical computing class, the teaching and learning process was analyzed by collecting data such as classroom videos, class observation logs, teacher and student questionnaires, and interviews. Based on the results of the study, the implications of the teaching and learning process of physical computing using the coded blocks in the school education field were suggested. And we also explored the strategy of expanding the computational thinking through the activities of coding instruction to realize creative ideas.

  • The aerosol optical thickness data retrieved by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) of Terra & Aqua and Meteorological Imager (MI) of Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) are analyzed and compared with the measurement data of Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) in Northeast Asia. As the result, the aerosol optical thickness retrieved by MODIS and MI were well agreed at ocean region but quite different at cloud edge and barren surface. The reason was that MODIS aerosol optical thickness was retrieved using the visible and infrared channels but MI was retrieved with the visible channel only. Consequentially, the thin cloud be misinterpreted as aerosol by MI and the difference between MODIS and MI aerosol optical thicknesses could be occurred with Normal Distribution Vegetation Index (NDVI) and land surface property. Therefore, the accuracies of clear/cloud region and surface reflectivity are required in order to improve the aerosol optical thickness algorithm by MI.
