  • Slags generated in the smelting reduction of deep sea manganese nodule could be utilized as an additional materials for making Fe-Si-Mn alloys by mixing with cokes and re-smelting at an arc furnace. In this re-melting process slag is also generated, and the secondary slag is treated as waste. In this survey, recycling of the waste slag of Mn nodule was studied. It is tried to utilize the waste slag as ceramic materials or construction materials. However, it is difficult to use the waste slag directly as an additional material to ceramics such as portland cement or castable refractory material due to the much difference of chemical compositions. As an altercation road constructing material is considered, and toxicity on the soil of the waste slag was tested according to Korean Standard for testing permissible amount of toxic substances. The test result was satisfied with the requirements on the standard. So, it should be suggested that the waste slag of the Mn nodule could be utilized as constructing materials such as road filler or base materials.

  • The $Pt-Sn/Al_2O_3$ catalysts mixed with metal oxides for propane dehydrogenation were studied. $Cu-Mn/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, $Ni-Mn/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, $Cu/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ was prepared and mixed with $Pt-Sn/Al_2O_3$ to measure the activity for propane dehydrogenation. As standard sample, $Pt-Sn/Al_2O_3$ catalyst mixed with glassbead was adopted. In the case of catalytic activity test after non-reductive pretreatment of catalyst and metal oxide, $Pt-Sn/Al_2O_3$ mixed with $Cu-Mn/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ showed higher conversion of 15% and similar selectivity at $576.5^{\circ}C$, compared to conversion of 8% in standard sample. In the case of catalytic activity test after reductive pretreatment of catalyst and metal oxde, $Cu/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ showed higer yield than standard sample. But, increase of yield of most of samples after reductive pretreatment was not significant, so it was found that lattice oxygen of $Cu-Mn/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ is effective to propane dehydrogenation.

  • The various surface treated conditions of Fe-3.0%Ni-0.7%Cr-1.4%Mn-X steel such as as-received, ion nitriding, DLC coated, DLC coated after nitriding for 3 hrs and 6 hrs were investigated to evaluate the beneficial effect for plastic mold steel. Micro Vickers hardness tester was used to estimate nitriding depth from the hardness profile and to measure hardness on the surface. Elastic modulus and residual stress were measured by a nanoindentator. Scratch test and SP (small ball punch test) were utilized to assess the adhesive strength of DLC coating. The depth of nitriding layer was measured as $50{\mu}m$ for the condition of 3 hrs nitriding and $90{\mu}m$ for that of 6 hrs nitriding. Hardness, elastic modulus, residual stress of DLC coating were 20.37 GPa, 162.78 GPa and -1456 MPa respectively. Residual stress on the surface of DLC coating after nitriding could increase to -3914 MPa by introducing nitriding before DLC coating. During the 'Ball-On-Disc' test ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ particles pulled out from the surface of nitrized layer tend to enhance abrasive wear mode since the fraction of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ (Fe4N) in ion-nitrized layer is known to increases with nitriding time. Thus the specific wear rate of the nitriding layer increased. Comparing with nitriding the specific wear rate in work piece disc as well as ball decreased prominently in DLC coating due to the remarkable reduction in friction coefficient.

  • An acetaldehyde, a representative food waste odor, was decomposed using a hybrid system comprised of a non-thermal plasma and catalyst at an ambient temperature under high humidity. A five wt.% Mn was impregnated on two differently structured microporous zeolites, namely Beta and ZSM-5, with a different molar ratio of SiO2/Al2O3. Under high humidity conditions, the acetaldehyde degradation was higher in zeolites with the high ratio of SiO2/Al2O3. Among studied catalysts, a five wt.% Mn/Beta (SiO2/Al2O3 = 300) showed the highest acetaldehyde removal activity owing to its high hydrophobicity and reducibility. During long term stability test using the same catalyst for 110 hours, the acetaldehyde removal activity was relatively well-maintained.

  • Negative expressions have their semantic function of classical negation as a pure reverser of truth-values. They also have various kin and foes of their pragmatic functions such as association of bad feelings (Russell 1948), emphasis/attenuation by negative polarity items, sarcasm, and metalinguistic negation (MN). This paper explores how MN and descriptive negation (DN) differ and whether the difference creates pragmatic ambiguity (Horn 1987) or reflects merely contextual variations of one logical negation (Carston 1996). To test the debate, this paper treats certain degree modifiers licensed exclusively by MN as in Mia-ka POTHONG/Yekan yeppu-n key an-i-a [external neg] (vs. modifier NPIs like cenhye 'at all', licensed only by DN) and contrasts them with bad utterances of the MN modifiers in [short form neg] sentences (not for MN) such as Mia-ka POTHONG an yeppu-e. The ERP results of the well-formed vs. ill-formed conditions evoked the N400 at Cz in written stimuli and the N400 near the center on both hemispheres in spoken stimuli. The results suggest that the anomalies are meaning-related and tend to support the pragmatic ambiguity.

  • To test the metal ion effect, hydrolysis experiments for two cellobiohydrolases (CBHⅠ and CBH Ⅱ) from Trichoderma reesei have been carried out in the presence of 10 mM metal ions, such as Cu++, Mn++, Ca++, Hg++, Ba++, Pb++, and Cd++. The addition of Mn++, Ba++, and Ca++(10 mM) during the hydrolysis of Avicel PH 101 caused an increase in the total reducing sugar (TRS) for CBH Ⅰ by 142, 135, and 114 percent, respectively. Those for CBH Ⅱ increased by 177, 175, and 115 percent, respectively. The Mn++ was the most stimulatory metal ion, whereas Hg++ was the most inhibitory metal ion. The adsorption experiments were performed to investigate how the influence of Mn++ and Hg++ on the hydrolysis is related to the adsorption of cellobiohydrolases on cellulose. The increase in TRS during hydrolysis by adding Mn++ caused an increase in adsorption affinity (Kad) and tightness (ΔHa). While, the decrease of TRS during hydrolysis by adding Hg++ caused a decrease in the adsorption affinity (Kad) and tightness (ΔHa). These results indicate the changes in the tightness and affinity of adsorption by adding metal ions play a crucial role in the degradation of the microcrystalline cellulose.

  • For the establishment of large force standard and the accurate measurement of large force, 2MN hydraulic force standard machine which consists of loading frame, deadweight machine, two ram/cylinder systems and hydraulic control system was designed and fabricated. Measurement results of shapes for tow ram/cylinders reveal that the ratio of effective area is 200.094. The relative deviation of force stability for the machine is about .+-. 0.01% at 2MN and is less than .+-. 0.005% below 2MN. This machine may be widely used to calibrate the force measuring devices in industry and to test the force sensors.

  • This study evaluated treatability of soluble Mn(II) using multifunctional sand media simultaneously coated with iron and manganese. In the preparation of IMCS(Iron and Manganese Coated Sand), 0.05 M Mn(II) solution and Fe(III) solution was mixed with sand at pH 7. The mineral type of IMCS was identified as the mixture of ${\gamma}-MnO_2$, goethite and magnetite($F_{e3}O_4$). The contents of Mn and Fe coated onto sand were 826 and 1676 mg/kg, respectively. The $pH_{pzc}$ of IMCS was measured as 6.40. The removal of soluble Mn(II) using IMCS and oxidants such as NaOCl and $KMnO_4$ was investigated with variation of the solution pH, reaction time and Mn(II) concentration in a batch test. The removal of Mn(II) on IMCS was 34% at pH 7.4 and the removals of Mn(II) on IMCS in the presence of NaOCl(13.6 mg/L) at pH 7 and $KMnO_4$(4.8 mg/L) at pH 7.6 were 96% and 89%, respectively. The removal of Mn(II) using IMCS and oxidants followed a typical cationic type, showing a gradual increase of removal as the solution pH increased. The removal of Mn(II) was rapid in the first 6 hrs and then a constant removal was observed. The maximum removed amount of Mn(II) on IMCS-alone and IMCS in the presence of oxidants such as NaOCl(13.6 mg/L) and $KMnO_4$(4.8mg/L) were 833.3, 1428.6 and 1666.7 mg/kg, respectively. Mn(II) removal onto the IMCS in the presence of oxidants was well described by second-order reaction and Langmuir isotherm expression.
