  • A triple-band transceiver module for 2.3/2.5/3.5 GHz mobile WiMAX, IEEE 802.16e, applications is introduced. The suggested transceiver module consists of RFIC, reconfigurable/multi-resonance MIMO antenna, embedded PCB, mobile WiMAX base band, memory and channel selection front-end module. The RFIC is fabricated in $0.13{\mu}m$ RF CMOS process and has 3.5 dB noise figure(NF) of receiver and 1 dBm maximum power of transmitter with 68-pin QFN package, $8{\times}8\;mm^2$ area. The area reduction of transceiver module is achieved by using embedded PCB which decreases area by 9% of the area of transceiver module with normal PCB. The developed triple-band mobile WiMAX transceiver module is tested by performing radio conformance test(RCT) and measuring carrier to interference plus noise ratio (CINR) and received signal strength indication (RSSI) in each 2.3/2.5/3.5 GHz frequency.

  • In this paper, we present a closed-form approximation of the average sum rate of zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming (BF) with semi-orthogonal user selection (SUS). We first derive the survival probability associated with the SUS that absolute square of the channel correlation between two users is less than the orthogonalization level threshold (OLT).With this result, each distribution for the number of surviving users at each iteration of the SUS and the number of streams for transmission is calculated. Secondly, the received signal power of ZF-BF is represented as a function of the elements of the upper triangular matrix from QR decomposition of the channel matrix. Thirdly, we approximate the received signal power of ZF-BF with the SUS as the maximum of scaled chisquare random variables where the scaling factor is approximated as a function of both OLT and the number of users in the system. Putting all the above derivations and order statistics together, the approximated ergodic sum rate of ZF-BF with the SUS is shown in a closed form. The simulation results verify that the approximation tightly matches with the sample average for any OLT and even for a small number of users.

  • Problems encountered in IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) design are interferences from neighboring or hidden nodes and collision from simultaneous transmissions within the same contention floors. This paper presents the selective decoding schemes in MAC protocol for multiple input multiple output ad-hoc networks. It is able to mitigate interferences by using a developed minimum mean-squared error technique. This interference mitigation combined with the maximum likelihood decoding schemes for the Alamouti coding enables the receiver to decode and differentiate the desired data streams from co-channel data streams. As a result, it allows a pair of simultaneous transmissions to the same or different nodes which yields the network utilization increase. Moreover, the presented three decoding schemes and time line operations are optimally selected corresponding to the transmission demand of neighboring nodes to avoid collision. The selection is determined by the number of request to send (RTS) packets and the type of clear to send packets. Both theoretical channel capacity and simulation results show that the proposed selective decoding scheme MAC protocol outperforms the mitigation interference using multiple antennas and the parallel RTS processing protocols for the cases of (1) single data stream and (2) two independent data streams which are simultaneously transmitted by two independent transmitters.

  • For the purpose of providing high data rate real-time services, radio transmission technologies (RTT) for ship ad-hoc network (SANET) based on the Recommendation ITU-R 1842-1 are designed. Physical layer parameters of SANET are contrived to meet the requirements of the specification. In order to improve the link reliability for SANET, in this paper, we investigate the performance of the SANET with the multiple antennas, where receive combining (RC), transmit diversity (TD), and beamforming (BF) are employed, respectively. Based on the analysis of the packet error rate (PER) under the highly correlated maritime wireless channel model, we select the efficient multiple antenna schemes for SANET to improve the link reliability. In addition, the optimal MCS levels for the single-carrier (SC) SANET with the bandwidth of 25 kHz, and the multi-carrier (MC) SANET with the bandwidth of 50 kHz and 100 kHz are finalized.

  • Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) is the next drive in the broadband mobile communication, which allows operators to improve networks performance and service capabilities. LTE-A targets the peak data rates of 1Gbps in the downlink and 500Mbps in the uplink. This requirement is only fulfilled by a transmission bandwidth of up to 100MHz. However the accessibility of such large part of the contiguous spectrum is uncommon in practice. Therefore LTE-A uses some new features on top of the existing LTE standards to provide very high data rate transmission. Some of the most significant features introduced in LTE-A are carrier aggregation, heterogeneous network enhancement, coordinated multipoint transmission and reception, enhanced multiple input and multiple output, and development relay nodes with universal frequency reuse. This review paper presents an overview of the above mentioned LTE-A key features and functionalities. Based on this review, in the conclusion we discuss the current technical challenges for future broadband mobile communication systems.

  • This paper investigates to design a controller for maritime autonomous surface ship (MASS) by means of adaptive super-twisting algorithm (ASTA). A input-out feedback linearization method is considered for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system. Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) is suitable for MASS subject to ocean environments due to its robustness against parameter uncertainties and disturbances. However, conventional SMC has inherent disadvantages so-called, chattering phenomenon, which resulted from the high frequency of switching terms. Chattering may cause harmful failure of actuators such as propeller and rudder of ships. The main contribution of this work is to address an appropriate controller for MASS, simultaneously controls surge and yaw motion in severe step inputs. Proposed control mechanism well provides convergence bewildered by external disturbances in the middle of steady-state responses as well as chattering attenuation. Also, the adaptive algorithm is contributed to reducing non-overestimated value of control gains. Control inputs of surge and yaw motion are displayed by smoother curves without excessive control activities of actuators. Finally, no overshoot can be seen in transient responses.

  • In this paper, we propose a concatenated single antenna diversity system to assure the data transmission reliability between flight type air nodes which move according to their atypical orbit, then analyze its performance. The proposed system achieve a diversity gain using single antenna and a coding gain from convolutional code simultaneously. Simulation result about the bit error rate(BER) of the proposed system shows that its BER performance is about 9.5dB greater than convolutional code at $10^{-4}$ and about 14dB greater than space time block code at $10^{-3}$ which has a full diversity gain. In addition, compared with space time trellis code with diversity gain and coding gain, the proposed system shows the better 4dB at a BER of $10^{-5}$. Therefore, it is necessary that concatenated single antenna diversity should be adopted to the reliable data transmission of flight type air nodes.

  • In this paper, the sensitivity of massive antenna arrays and digital beamforming to radio frequency (RF) chain in-phase quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance is studied and analyzed. The analysis shows that massive antenna arrays are increasingly sensitive to such RF chain imperfections, corrupting heavily the radiation pattern and beamforming capabilities. Motivated by this, novel RF-aware digital beamforming methods are then developed for automatically suppressing the unwanted effects of the RF I/Q imbalance without separate calibration loops in all individual receiver branches. More specifically, the paper covers closed-form analysis for signal processing properties as well as the associated radiation and beamforming properties of massive antenna arrays under both systematic and random RF I/Q imbalances. All analysis and derivations in this paper assume ideal signals to be circular. The well-known minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformer and a widely-linear (WL) extension of it, called WL-MVDR, are analyzed in detail from the RF imperfection perspective, in terms of interference attenuation and beamsteering. The optimum RF-aware WL-MVDR beamforming solution is formulated and shown to efficiently suppress the RF imperfections. Based on the obtained results, the developed solutions and in particular the RF-aware WL-MVDR method can provide efficient beamsteering and interference suppressing characteristics, despite of the imperfections in the RF circuits. This is seen critical especially in the massive antenna array context where the cost-efficiency of individual RF chains is emphasized.

  • This paper is made to suggest a future strategy for the Korean High Resolution Wide Swath Synthetic Aperture Radar (HRWS SAR) satellite development by surveying the current trends for the SAR satellite technologies. From the survey, the latest SAR technology trends are revealed of using Digital Beam-Forming (DBF), SCan-On-Receive (SCORE), Displaced Phase Center Antenna (DPCA), interferometry, and polarimetry for exploiting the SAR imagery. Based on the latest SAR technology trends and the foreign HRWS SAR development cases, the strategy for the future HRWS Korean SAR satellite development is suggested to develop the DPCA and SCORE technologies by using the KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-6 (KOMPSAT-6) which is going to launch in a few years, and consequently to develop the HRWS SAR satellites which can monitor the whole Earth at weekly intervals.

  • In this paper, we propose method to enhance security performance using HT-STBC with artificial noise under Wier-Tap channel model that exist with legitimate receiver and illegal eavesdropper. Conventional STBC with artificial noise scheme has a weakness that a limited increase in the BER of the difference between the receiver and an eavesdropper, when used over QPSK modulation. To solve this problem, we suggest HT-STBC combining hadamard transform and STBC with artificial noise for reduce BER of receiver than the conventional scheme and demonstrated through simulation that also increased BER difference between the receiver and an eavesdropper. By the simulation results, when used proposed scheme, showed approximately 3dB improvement in performance compared to the conventional scheme.
