  • This paper presents a new approach to the synthesis of two-dimensional arrays such as Atmel 6000 series FPGAs using internal don't cares. Basically complex terms which fits to the linear array of cells without further routing wires are generated and they are collected by OR/XOR operations. In previous methods, complex terms are collected only by XOR operations, which may not be effective for nearly unate functions. In this paper, we allow complex terms to be collected by OR operations in addition to XOR operations. First, complex terms that lies in the ON-set of the function are generated and collected by OR operations. The sub-function realized by the first stage becomes an internal don't cares and they are exploited in the second stage which generates complex terms collectable by XOR operation. Experimental results shows the efficacy of the proposed method compared to the previous methods.

  • MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs (~22 nucleotides) regulating gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. By directing the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to bind specific target mRNAs, miRNA can repress target genes and affect various biological phenotypes. Functional miRNA target recognition is known to majorly attribute specificity to consecutive pairing with seed region (position 2-8) of miRNA. Recent advances in a transcriptome-wide method of mapping miRNA binding sites (Ago HITS-CLIP) elucidated that a large portion of miRNA-target interactions in vivo are mediated not only through the canonical "seed sites" but also via non-canonical sites (~15-80%), setting the stage to expand and determine their properties. Here we focus on recent findings from transcriptome-wide non-canonical miRNA-target interactions, specifically regarding "nucleation bulges" and "seed-like motifs". We also discuss insights from Ago HITS-CLIP data alongside structural and biochemical studies, which highlight putative mechanisms of miRNA target recognition, and the biological significance of these non-canonical sites mediating marginal repression.

  • An unusually large protein complex was found in the cytosol of the hyperthmophilic archaeon. Thermococcus profundus. The purified protein was shown to be a homomultimer of 93 kDa subunit (P93 complex). The complex is extremely heat stable. During 12 hrs incubation with SDS (final concentration 1%) at $85^{\circ}C$, no changed structure could be observed. Electron image analysis of negatively stained showed that the complex has a single, stable characteristic view and a well-preserved core with threefold rotational symmetry. The periphery of the assembly is composed of a nebulose, possibly flexible, component. Based on the projected structure suggest the P93 complex from T. profundus is composed 24 homomultimer.

  • It has been reported that exogenously introduced micro-RNA (exo-miRNA) competes with endogenously expressed miRNAs (endo-miRNAs) in human cells, resulting in a detectable upregulation of mRNAs with endo-miRNA target sites (TSs). However, the detailed mechanisms of the competition between exo- and endo-miRNAs remain uninvestigated. In this study, using 74 microarrays that monitored the whole-transcriptome response after introducing miRNAs or siRNAs into HeLa cells, we systematically examined the derepression of mRNAs with exo- and/or endo-miRNA TSs. We quantitatively assessed the effect of the number of endo-miRNA TSs on the degree of mRNA derepression. As a result, we observed that the number of endo-miRNA TSs was significantly associated with the degree of derepression, supporting that the derepression resulted from the competition between exo- and endo-miRNAs. However, when we examined whether the site proficiency of exo-miRNA TSs could also influence mRNA derepression, to our surprise, we discovered a strong positive correlation. Our analysis indicates that site proficiencies of both exo- and endo-miRNA TSs are important determinants for the degree of mRNA derepression, implying that the derepression of mRNAs in response to exo-miRNA is more complex than that currently perceived. Our observations may lead to a more complete understanding of the detailed mechanisms of the competition between exo- and endo-miRNAs and to a more accurate prediction of miRNA targets. Our analysis also suggests an interesting hypothesis that long 3'-UTRs may function as molecular buffer against gene expression regulation by individual miRNAs.

  • Objectives: The concentrations and distribution characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in an industrial complex and surrouding affected residential areas were investigated in an effort to support the efficient management of VOCs. Methods: The atmospheric concentrations of VOCs were analyzed at sites around the Sihwa-Banwol complex located in the cities of Siheung and Ansan and in the surrounding affected residential areas. The appearance of VOCs and the characteristics of their temporal and spatial distribution were evaluated. Results: The total VOC concentrations in the industrial complex were detected at 1.9-2.3 times higher than in the affected areas, but the daily VOCs distributions showed similar patterns in both sites. In particular, it was confirmed that the composition ratio of the VOCs and concentration fluctuations over time in the affected areas are similar to those in the adjacent industrial complex. VOC levels in the affected areas were higher than in residential areas in cities without an industrial complex. Conclusions: VOCs in residential areas near an industrial complex were highly distributed due to the influence of continuous pollutant emissions from the industrial complex. Therefore, the management of VOCs in the atmosphere of the affected area is important for identifying and managing the sources of VOCs detected in high concentrations in the industrial complex.

  • The community mixed-support facility in Japan is making efforts to try various approaches according to the changes made to allow the privatization of public facilities on the basis of Act on Special Measures for Urban Regeneration since 2004. Due to this change in policy, the community mixed-support facility is now taking further steps in trying to implement variety of approaches in the perspective of urban regeneration and urban maintenance and at the same time the trend of installation of community facility has gone through vivid changes for the last 20 years. The causes of this are from the social demand that claims for of new facilities and the change in the subsidy system in relation to equality in facility installation. Examples of the first cause can be the building of perpetuating educational society, an execution or a movement towards the society of gender equality, a countermovement for an aging society as well as a welfare society, and recently social phenomenon related to consumption is becoming an issue. And for the last, the number of construction of facilities is increasing that grow out of the traditional facility system. The complex of community mixed-support facility will provide public administrative and community mixed-support services to local people as well as to form a notion of community and a feeling of solidarity. Ultimately, this will develop local areas by regional interchanging of information. In this very research, we will analyze the community mixed-support facility and its characteristics as well as its implications and consider the types of complex through many preceding instances in Japanese community mixed-support facility.

  • Feed cost is the main factor affecting the economic benefits of pig industry. Improving the feed efficiency (FE) can reduce the feed cost and improve the economic benefits of pig breeding enterprises. Liver is a complex metabolic organ which affects the distribution of nutrients and regulates the efficiency of energy conversion from nutrients to muscle or fat, thereby affecting feed efficiency. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that can regulate feed efficiency through the modulation of gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. In this study, we analyzed miRNA profiling of liver tissues in High-FE and Low-FE pigs for the purpose of identifying key miRNAs related to feed efficiency. A total 212~221 annotated porcine miRNAs and 136~281 novel miRNAs were identified in the pig liver. Among them, 188 annotated miRNAs were co-expressed in High-FE and Low-FE pigs. The 14 miRNAs were significantly differentially expressed (DE) in the livers of high-FE pigs and low-FE pigs, of which 5 were downregulated and 9 were upregulated. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis of liver DE miRNAs in high-FE pigs and low-FE pigs indicated that the target genes of DE miRNAs were significantly enriched in insulin signaling pathway, Gonadotropin-releasing hormone signaling pathway, and mammalian target of rapamycin signaling pathway. To verify the reliability of sequencing results, 5 DE miRNAs were randomly selected for quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The qRT-PCR results of miRNAs were confirmed to be consistent with sequencing data. DE miRNA data indicated that liver-specific miRNAs synergistically acted with mRNAs to improve feed efficiency. The liver miRNAs expression analysis revealed the metabolic pathways by which the liver miRNAs regulate pig feed efficiency.

  • A novel blue-green emitting aluminum complex was developed by employing 8-hydroxyquinoline as co-ligand for enhancement of electron transport and light emission abilities so that the electroluminescent (EL) devices do not need additional electron transport layer. The aluminum complex (PAlQ) of 8-hydroxyquinoline and ${\alpha}$-pyridoin was synthesized The structure of the PAlQ was elucidated by FT-IR, UV-Vis and XPS. The PAlQ complex showed thermal stability up to 350$^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen flow by TGA. The photoluminescence (PL) was measured from solid film of the PAlQ complex on quartz substrate. The EL device was fabricated by the vacuum deposition. The device having the structure of ITO/TPD/PAlQ/Al was studied, where N,N-bis(3-methylphenyl}-N,N'-diphenyl-benzidine (TPD) was used as a hole transporting layer. The EL device emitted a blue-green light.

  • A macrocyclic ligand, N,N',N'-tribenzyl-2,11,20-triaza[3,3,3](2,6)pyridinophane (BAPP), was used to prepare an iron(II) complex as a nonheme model complex, $[(BAPP)Fe]^{+2}$ (1). X-ray crystallography of a colorless crystal of 1 revealed that BAPP acted as a pentadentate ligand due to geometrical strain for the formation of a six-coordinate iron(II) complex by BAPP. As a result, the iron center revealed a significantly distorted square pyramidal geometry similar to that found in the active site of taurine dioxygenase (tauD). In the reaction of 1 with PhIO, no intermediate was observed in the UV-visible region of spectrometer at low temperatures. Catalytic oxidations of triphenyl phosphine with PhIO at ${-40^{\circ}C}$ revealed that 1 was able to convert triphenyl phosphine to triphenyl phosphine oxide.23; SSOCHKThioanisole was also oxidized to the corresponding methylphenyl sulfoxide under the same conditions.

  • The term odontoma, first introduced by Broca, was originally applied to all odontogenic tumors. Related to the clinical and histological differences, 2 groups of odontoma were defined: compound odontoma and complex odontoma. Complex odontoma is more common in the mandible than in the maxilla, usually occuring in the mandibular premolar-molar area. And this consists of small mass of irregularly arranged enamel, dentine, cementum, and connective tissue, but tooth-like structures are not found. In our case, 34 year old man was diagnosed as the complex odontoma of maxillary sinus by the physical exam, Panex, and C.T scan. We sectioned and removed it, and then confirmed the diagnosis histopathologically. Its uncommon location and size made us report that case and review the literature concerned.
