  • This study was attempted to investigate the effect of Machili Cortex extract(Machilus thunbergii Sieb. et Zucc. ) on digestive system in experimental animals. EtOH and MeOH extracts(E.E. and M.E.) were found to inhibit the charcoal transport rate in the small intestine of mice. E.E. exhibited the inhibition of spontaneous movement(motility) and tension in the ileum and colon strips of rabbit, and these actions were inhibited by action of acetylcholine. E.E. and M.E. given intraduodenaly(i.d.) exhibitied the significant decrease of gastric acid secretion in pylorus-ligated rats. E.E. and M.E. inhibited the formation of some experimental gastric ulcers(pylorus ligation-ulcer i.d., indomethacin-induced ulcer p.o. and aspirin-induced ulcer p.o. ) in rats, which are considered to relate to a protective action. E.E. and M.E. caused remarkable increase of bile excretion, compared with normal-control group, when adminstered through i.d., i.v. and p.o. The antibacterial activity against several intestinal microorganisms and other bacteria in vitro test was observed in the administration of E.E. and M.E.

  • During the screening for inhibitors of melanin biosynthesis from plant extract, Angelica polymorpha MAXIM which showed a high level of inhibition was selected. The inhibiting substances were purified form methanol extract of Angelica polymorpha MAXIM followed by silica gel column chromatography and HPLC. The inhibitors were identified as heraclenin, isosaxalin and heraclenol 3'-Me ether, by spectrescopic methods of ESI-MS, H-NMR, C-NMR, DEPT, HMQC and HMBC. These compounds did not have mushroom tyrosinase inhibitory activity, but showed a highly potent melanin biosynthesis inhibition zone in the plate culture of Streptomyces bikiniensis, a bacterium used as an indicator organism in this work. These compounds did not show any growth inhibition against S. bikiniensis at the same concentration of melanin biosynthesis test.

  • Purpose: This study, using a pre-post test design of non-equivalence comparative group, was done to determine effects of Kangaroo care (KC) on growth in premature infants and on maternal attachment (MA). Methods: Fifty-three premature infants were assigned to the KC (24) or control group (CG) (29). Data were collected from July 2007 to June 2008. KC was given for 60 min at a time, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 10 times. Weight, height, and head circumference (HC) of premature infants were checked before the program started. Following the initial measurement, the program was given and measurements were taken again at the end of the program. For measurement of attachment between mother and infant, data collection was done using structured self-reported questionnaires. Results: KC group had a higher weight (t=2.565, p=.013), height (t=2.182, p=.034) and HC (t=2.468, p=.017) than the CG. Compared to the CG, the KC had significantly higher scores in MA (t=2.026, p=.048). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the practice of KC in the nursing environment might actively promote attachment between mother and infant as well as acceleration of growth for premature infants as one of the most efficient nursing intervention.

  • A Proton Therapy Center was established this year in National Cancer Center, Korea. We chose IBA of Belgium as the vendor of the equipment package. A 230 MeV fixed-energy cyclotron will deliver proton beams into two gantry rooms, one horizontal beam room, and one experimental station. The building for the equipment is currently under design with a special emphasis on radiation shielding. Installation of equipments is expected to begin in September next year starting with the first gantry, and the acceptance test will be performed about a year later. To generate therapeutic radiation fields the wobbling method will be a main treatment mode for the first gantry. A pencil beam scanning system on the other hand will be equipped for the second gantry relying on the availability at the time of installation. The beam scanning with intensity modulation adapted will be a most advanced form in radiation therapy known as IMPT. Some details on the project progress, scope of the system, and design of building are described.

  • The CHCl3 fraction of the MeOH extract of Ganoderma gibbosum (Ganodermataceae) exhibited cytotoxic activity on five cancer cell lines (MDA-MB-231, SK-hep1, A549, HCT116, and SNU638). Six highly oxygenated lanostane-type triterpenoids (lanostanoids) were isolated by column chromatography to test cytotoxicity on cancer cells. The five known lanostanoids were identified as gibbosic acids A, B, D, G, and H by comparison of molecular ion peaks with the literature data. The structure of a new lanostanoid, gibbosic acids I, was identified to be 3β,8β,15β,20S-tetrahydroxy-7,12,23-trioxolanost-9(11)-en-26-oic acid on the basis of NMR and MS spectroscopy. The three lanostanoids of gibbosic acids A, H, and I of the six isolates significantly suppressed the growth of cancer cells. In particular, the IC50 of gibbosic acid H was prominently low ranging from 2.64-6.56 μM.
