  • An experimental investigation has been conducted to determine the effectiveness of base shield plates in reducing the drag of a rough circular cylinder in a cross flow at Reynolds numbers in the range $3{\times}10^4{\leq}Re{\leq}10.5{\times}10^4$. Three model configurations were investigated and compared: a plane cylinder (PC), a cylinder with a splitter plate (MC1) and a cylinder fitted with base shield plates (MC2). Each configuration was studied in the sub and supercritical flow regimes. The chord of the plates, L, ranged from 0.22 to 1.50D and the cavity width, G, between the plates was in the range from 0 to 0.93D. It is recognized that base shield plates can be employed more effectively than splitter plates to reduce the aerodynamic drag of circular cylinders in both the sub- and supercritical flow regimes. For subcritical flow regime, one can get 53% and 24% drag reductions for the MC2 and MC1 models with L/D=1.0, respectively, compared with the PC model. For supercritical flow regime however, the corresponding drag reductions are 38% and 7%.

  • The purpose of the research is to develop a systematic model to interpret makeup signs through a case analysis of makeup shown in Alexander McQueen's ready-to-wear collections from 2001 to 2010 and to prove an importance of makeup as a communication medium to deliver social and cultural values. This research employed Panofsky's Iconology theory to analyze data. This theory consists of three steps to interpret the meaning of a work: (1) pre-iconographical description, (2) iconographical analysis, and (3) iconological interpretation. Alexander McQueen's makeup was analyzed with the three steps in order. As a result of the pre-iconographical description step, makeup styles (icons) in his collections are identified which are Egyptian style, Gothic style, Androgynous style, Victorian style, Fantasia style, and Futuristic variant style. The iconographical analysis step identified that the elements used in his makeup are inspired by his identity and life. In the final step of iconological interpretation, the researcher concluded that Alexander McQueen's makeup expresses social, cultural, and aesthetical value of the time period when the collection was created. His makeup shows postmodernism that accepts a diversity of views (the pluralism) and humanism, romantic narcissism that is his personality trait, and avant-garde that pursues a new, creative aesthetics.

  • For the treatment of superficial tumors like squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, 6 MV photon beam is not appropriate and a spoiler is widely used to increase dose in the buildup region, while preserving the skin sparing effect. However, commercially available treatment planning systems assume a normal unspoiled beam, thereby cannot predict the buildup dose with spoiler accurately. We aimed to implement a Monte Carlo (MC) based planning system to apply it to the radiation treatment of head and neck. Lucite with thickness of 10-mm was used for the beam spoiler with Siemens Primus 6 MV photon beam. BEAM/DOSXYZ MC system was employed to model the linac and the spoiler. To verify the calculation accuracy of MC simulations, the percent depth doses (PDDs) and profiles with and without spoiler were measured using a parallel-plate chamber. For the MC based planning, we adopted a hybrid interface system between Pinnacle (Philips, USA) and BEAM/DOSXYZ to support treatment parameters of Siemens linac and the spoiler. The measurements of PDDs and profiles agreed with the corresponding MC simulations within 2% (lSD), which demonstrate the reliability of our MC simulations. The spoiler generated electrons make a contribution to the absorbed dose up to depth of 2cm, which shows that the dominant source of increased dose from spoiler system is the contaminating electrons created by the spoiler. The whole procedures necessary for MC based treatment planning were performed seamlessly between Pinnacle and BEAM/DOSXYZ system. This ability helps to increase the clinical efficiency of the spoiler technique. In conclusion, we implemented a MC based treatment planning system for a 6 MV photon beam with a spoiler. We demonstrate sophisticated MC technique makes it possible to predict dose distributions around buildup region accurately.

  • In order to develop a model for better understanding of causal relationships in resiliency factors in families of children with disabilities, 200 families participated in this adaptation of the Resiliency Model of McCubbin and McCubbin(1993). The 6 latent variables included in the hypothesized model were family stress, family hardiness, family schema, community support, family problem-solving communication, and family adaptation. The models were developed on the basis of confirmatory factor analysis and compared using covariance structure modeling (LISREL). Adequate fitness of the model was observed. Family stress showed negative effect on family schema and on family hardiness. Family schema showed positive effect on community support and on family hardiness. Family hardiness showed positive effect on family problem-solving communication, and family problem-solving communication showed positive effect on family adaptation.

  • In this paper we consider the problem of forecasting binomial time series, modelled by the binomial autoregressive model. This paper considers proposed by McKenzie (1985) and is extended to a higher order by $Wei{\ss}$(2009). Since the binomial autoregressive model is a Markov chain, we can apply the earlier work of Bu and McCabe (2008) for integer valued autoregressive(INAR) model to the binomial autoregressive model. We will discuss how to compute the h-step-ahead forecast of the conditional probabilities of $X_{T+h}$ when T periods are used in fitting. Then we obtain the maximum likelihood estimator of binomial autoregressive model and use it to derive the maximum likelihood estimator of the h-step-ahead forecast of the conditional probabilities of $X_{T+h}$. The methodology is illustrated by applying it to a data set previously analyzed by $Wei{\ss}$(2009).

Abstract Switching software requires high reliability, functionality, extendability and maintainability. For doing, software quality model based on MaCabe's complexity measure is investigated. It is experimentally shown using regression analysis the program fault density depends on the complexity and size of the function unit. The software should be verified and tested if it satisfies its requirements with automated analysis tools. In this paper we propose the regression model with the test data. The sample program for the regression model consists of more than 500 blocks, where each block compose of 10 files, which has 59 functions of switching activity.Among them we choose 394 blocks and analyzed for 59 functions by testing tools and SAS package. We developed Regression Analysis Model and evaluated significant of the equation based on McCabe's cyclomatic complexity, block design complexity, design complexity, and integration complexity. The results of our experimental study are that number of fault are under the influence of McCabe's complexity number and design complexity.

  • In order to overcome the demerit and to improve the operation characteristics of Moving Coil type Linear Oscillatory Actuator(MC-LOA) with single-pole permanent magnet, this paper presents two models having the balanced magnetic circuit by multi-pole permanent magnet. They are short coil type with two-pole single-sided and two-ple double-sided permanent magnet. The characteristics between single-pole and multi-pole permanent magnet type MC-LOA are compared. As a result, multi-pole type MC-LOA has more merits than single-pole type about operation characteristics improvement and machine volume. The characteristics analysis is performed by their dynamic analysis composed of kinetic and electric equations and Finite Element Method(FEM). The propriety of multi-pole type MC-LOA model is verified with analysis results.

  • For an accurate and efficient time-dependent Monte Carlo (TDMC) neutron transport analysis, several advanced methods are newly developed and implemented in the Seoul National University Monte Carlo code, McCARD. For an efficient control of the neutron population, a dynamic weight window method is devised to adjust the weight bounds of the implicit capture in the time bin-by-bin TDMC simulations. A moving geometry module is developed to model a continuous insertion or withdrawal of a control rod. Especially, the history-based batch method for the TDMC calculations is developed to predict the unbiased variance of a bin-wise mean estimate. The developed methods are verified for three-dimensional problems in the C5G7-TD benchmark, showing good agreements with results from a deterministic neutron transport analysis code, nTRACER, within the statistical uncertainty bounds. In addition, the TDMC analysis capability implemented in McCARD is demonstrated to search the optimum detector positions for the pulsed-neutron-source experiments in the Kyoto University Critical Assembly and AGN201K.
