Three versions of the K-MBSR program were compared: a 4-week program composed of formal meditation an 8-week program with official meditation and a 12-week program that combined the 4-week and 8-week programs. The 4-week K-MBSR program did not result in a significant decrease in depression, anxiety, or negative emotion. The 8-week and 12-week K-MBSR programs decreased the score of depression significantly, and the effect continued until 8 months. The effect of the 12-week K-MBSR program was greaterthan the effect of the 8-week program, but not significantly. The result of this study indicates that the effect of the 4-week K-MBSR program appears insignificant. The effects of the 8-week and 12-week programs are almost the same, but the effect of 12-week K-MBSR program showed a slightly greater effect in the post-test and 8-month test. The findings were discussed the effect of k-MBSR Program and recommendations for further research.

Although MBSR programs have been shown to be beneficial, its effects have not been well-determined among Korean populations in clinical nursing practice. The purpose of this review was to describe the effects of MBSR on stress and health-related QOL so that the potential benefits of this intervention may be evaluated for wider application in Korea. Methods: Articles published in peer-reviewed journals in the English or Korean language up to 2009 were reviewed; 14 articles met the inclusion criteria for this review and there were no Korean papers. Results: MBSR groups were found to have significantly reduced stress outcomes relative to non-MBSR groups in 6 of 11 studies. In regards to health-related QOL, participants of the MBSR programs had increased scores after MBSR intervention relative to control groups in 5 of 7 studies. Conclusion: MBSR programs was effective in decreasing stress and increased the health-related QOL in the majority of studies reviewed. MBSR merits study in Korean patients to determine whether similar salutary patient outcomes may be obtained.

  • Purpose: This study applied the Korean Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (K-MBSR) program for mothers of children and adolescents with mental illnesses, and verified its effectiveness on perceived stress and depression based on the Middle-range theory of caregiver stress. Methods: A quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group pre-post test design was used. The K-MBSR program was reconstructed with experts' advice to adjust subjects' characters. Using a group approach, sessions were conducted once a week for six weeks, and each session took 2.5 hours. Results: The experimental group did not show a significant decrease in perceived stress than the control group. However, the experimental group showed a significant decrease in depression than the control group. Conclusion: The K-MBSR program was effective for depression. Future studies on high-stress groups or with an extended program are necessary to clarify the effects of the K-MBSR program on perceived stress. These results are consistent with the middle-range theory of caregiver stress, the theoretical framework of this study. When caregivers have similar inputs, proper intervention can change the control process. Further, it can be assumed that this change positively affects the output.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a meditation application to promote home practice in a meditation-based intervention program and test its effects. In most cases, meditation-based intervention programs put an emphasis on home practice, which means it is an important matter to increase motivation for home practice and encourage people to do home practice more. The investigator administered an eight-week Korean Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (K-MBSR) program to college students participating in a liberal arts course at A University. While the experiment group (N = 22) received a meditation application, the comparison group (N = 19) received no meditation application. The amount of home practice was measured based on the practice logs kept by the participants. The difference in psychological effects between the groups was checked by measuring mindfulness, subfactors (noticing and return to body) of body awareness, life satisfaction, acceptance action, and sleep quality before and after the experiment. The findings show that the experiment group recorded significantly greater amounts of home practice than the comparison group. As for the effects of meditation, the experiment group recorded higher points in mindfulness, body awareness, life satisfaction, acceptance action, and sleep quality than the comparison group. These findings demonstrate that a meditation application can be useful as a means of assistance to promote the effects of a meditation-based intervention program. The study also discussed proposals for a follow-up study.

  • The purpose of this study was to review meditation programs for stress relief of Korean nurses. Whittmore and Knafl's integrative review methods were used. The search yielded 97 articles, 7 of which met the criteria and were included in the review. One of the selected studies was a randomized controlled quasi-experimental design and six were a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Meditation programs varied from 5 to 8 sessions. All of the meditation programs measured the effect on stress as various meditation programs. However, there was one study confirming the degree of stress management maintenance after the end of the meditation program. Although there are contents to strengthen the practice and will of nurses, it was confirmed that it was difficult to evaluate sincerity. Therefore, a highly accessible program for nurses in various clinical situations and strategies to strengthen participants' practice and will needs to be included in the meditation program content.
