  • This study proposed the analysis of mass position detection due to the change of the mass and stiffness of structure by using the original and modified dynamic characteristics. The method is applied to examples of a cantilever and 3 degree of freedom by modifying the mass. The predicted detection of mass positions and magnitudes are in good agreement with these from the structural reanalysis using the modified mass.

  • An analytical method is presented for predicting the effect of a local deviation in the form of a concentrated mass along a radial line on the free bending vibration characteristics of a nearly axisymmetric circular plate. The approach is based on the Rayleigh-Ritz method and the expression of local deviation of the concentrated radial mass as the variation of heaviside unit step function. The effects of the concentrated mass on the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the plate are predicted with a proposed nondimensional mass parameter.

  • Atmospheric aerosols have become a major environmental concern because of their adverse effects on human health, air quality, and climate change. Over the last few decades, several mass spectrometry (MS)-based techniques have been developed and applied in the field of atmospheric aerosol research. Particularly, real-time measurement of ambient aerosols using an aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) has become one of the most powerful tools for aerosol chemistry. This review provides a brief description of AMS and its applications for understanding the physicochemical properties of atmospheric aerosols, as well as its sources and evolution processes.

  • The objective of this study was to construct the spring-mass models for the car-to-car offset frontal impact crash. The SISAME software was utilized to extract the spring-mass models using the data from the offset frontal crash test. The spring-mass model of the passenger car could effectively approximate the crash characteristics for the offset frontal barrier impact and the car-to-car offset frontal impact scenarios.

  • As theoretical and empirical studies have pointed out, galaxy mergers play a pivotal role in galaxy mass assembly histories. Its contribution is considered to be more significant in more massive galaxies. In order to quantitatively understand the origin of stellar components in galaxies, we investigated stellar mass assembly histories as a function of galaxy and halo mass using semi-analytic approaches. In this study, we found that the most massive galaxies (log $M/M_{\odot}$ ~ 11.75 at z = 0), which are mostly the brightest cluster galaxies, obtain roughly 70% of their stellar components via mergers. The role of mergers monotonically declines with galaxy mass: less than 20% for log $M/M_{\odot}$ = 10.75 at z = 0. The contribution of galaxy mergers to stellar mass growth decays more slowly than that of in-situ star formation. Therefore, merger accretion becomes a dominant channel for stellar mass growth of the most massive group since z~2. However, when it comes to central galaxies in haloes less massive than $10^{13}_{\odot}$, star formation is always dominant.

  • The research of the current situation of made-to-measure production by ready-made men's suit companies was done by interviewing and surveying the made-to-measure specialists. It was apparent that most frequently purchased items in Mass Customization were jackets of formal dress. The results of the research on the current situation of Mass Customization by ready-made clothes companies were as follows. The Mass Customization accounted for 3∼10%. The advantages of Mass Customization were more acceptable sizes, designs and details while the initial reasons for it were unusual physical figures and designs. The posture of a customer during measuring turned out to be critical enough to influence fitness after production. The companies in the research were found out to have materials for Mass Customization in storage and the sizes and other data of fixed circle of customers who would want Mass Customization saved in computer in most of the cases.

  • The optimal strategy for semelparous females may involve adjustments in the relative investment in two fitness components, the number of offspring and the post-hatching investment per capita. To determine the pattern of maternal resource allocation to offspring in the matriphagous spider, Amaurobius ferox (Amaurobiidae), I investigated the relationship between maternal body-mass and the number of offspring, and quantified the transfer of maternal body-mass to the offspring via different forms of maternal provisioning (trophic egg-laying and matriphagy). There was a positive relationship between female body-mass and the number of offspring. However, Amaurobius mothers did not produce more trophic eggs when they had larger broods. Rather, spiderlings in larger A. ferox broods consumed larger quantities of maternal body-mass via matriphagy. Mothers transferred $28.8{\pm}6.5%$ of their body-mass to the spiderlings via trophic egg-laying, and an estimated $39.0{\pm}12.5%$ of their body-mass was transferred to the spiderlings via matriphagy.

  • Dynamic response of any small structure is always affected by the mass of the attached accelerometer. This paper predicts the natural frequencies and frequency response functions by removing the mass loading effect from the accelerometer. This mass loading is studied on a simple cantilever beams by varying the location of accelerometer. By using sensitivity analysis with iteration method, accelerometer mass and location are obtained. The predicted natural frequencies of the small cantilever beam without the accelerometer's mass show good agreement with the structural re-analysis.

  • In this paper, a modeling method for the bending vibration analysis of rotating Timoshenko beams with concentrated mass and mass moment of inertia is presented. The shear and rotary inertia effects become critical for the accurate estimation of the natural frequencies and mode shapes as the slenderness ratio decreases. The natural frequencies obtained by using the Timoshenko beam theory are lower than those by using the Euler beam theory. The critical angular speed, which does not exist only with the concentrated mass, exists with the concentrated mass moment of inertia.

  • This paper deals with dynamic response of a beam structure with discrete spring-damper supports under a moving mass. Governing equations of motion taking into account of all inertia effects of the moving mass were derived by Galerkin's mode summation method, and Runge-Kutta integration method was applied to solve the differential equations. The effects of the speed of the moving mass, spring stiffness, damping coefficient, span number of a beam structure, mass ratio of the moving mass on the dynamic response of the beam structure have been studied. Some numerical results provide design engineers for the beam structure design with discrete supports under a moving mass.
