Four species of marine algae, 1 green and 3 red algae, were newly found in Korea from Cheju Island and its vicinities in course of floristic survey. Three of them, Antithamnion callocladus, Balliella crouanioides, and Caulerpa ambigua, were collected from subtidal zone and the other, Choreonema thuretii, from intertidal zone.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity of red algae in Jeju Island. The algal extracts were obtained with MeOH and fresh water at 20 and 70°C, and screened for antioxidant activities using hydroxyl radical (HO·), superoxide anion (O2–), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and DPPH free radical scavenging assays. Among them, Gracilaria verrucosa methanolic extract at 20°C (20ME, 96.85%), G. textorii aqueous extract at 20°C (20AE, 88.01%), Grateloupia filicina 20AE (85.35%), and Polysiphonia japonica 20ME (94.92%) exhibited the highest scavenging activities against HO·, O2–, H2O2, and DPPH free radicals, respectively. Moreover, P. japonica (20ME and 70ME) is correlated between DPPH free radical scavenging activity and polyphenolic contents. These results indicate that some red algae in Jeju Island could be potential candidates for development of antioxidants.
Continued to the previous papers, the present investigation is carried out to clarify cesium-137 activities and potassium contents among 54 samples of edible marine algae collected along the coast of Korea during September, 1973 and April, 1974. The potassium contents are variable, 1.5-29.6%, and 11.36% on an average, while most of the members contain them about 10-16% generally. Among the algal phyla, they are 13.49% in green, 10.82% in brown and 16.46% in red algae, respectively. Cesium-137 activities are variable, 0.19-8.13 pCi$\^$137/ Cs/g K, and 2.35 pCi$\^$137/Cs/g K on an average in the samples investigated. Among the algal phyla they are 4.35 in green, 2.17 in brown and 0.89 pCi $\^$137/Cs/g K in red algae, respectively. Green algae contain especially higher activities compared with the other two groups. The brown alga, Myelophycus caespitosus shows the highest activities, 8.13 pCi$\^$137/Cs/g K, among the members investigated. Considering the concentration factor, this plant would be an indicator plant of cesium-137 among the marine algae along the coast of Korea.
This study was conducted to screen in vitro angiotensin - I converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activities of methanol (MeOH) and aqueous extracts at 20°C and 70°C, respectively, prepared from twenty-six red algae obtained from the coast of Jeju Island in Korea. Among aqueous extracts at 20°C (20AE) from red algae Lomentaria catenata showed the strongest ACE inhibitory activity and Lithophyllum okamurae recorded the second highest activity. From MeOH extract at 20°C (20ME) Ahnfeltiopsis flabelliformis possessed the strongest ACE inhibitory activity. Remarkable activities from MeOH extracts at 70°C (70ME) were observed in Grateloupia filicina, Sinkoraena lancifolia and Grateloupia lanceolata. However, no significant activity was found in aqueous extracts at 70°C (70AE). The IC50 values, which are concentrations required to inhibit 50% activity of ACE, for ACE inhibitory activities of 20AE from Lithophyllum okamurae and L. catenata were 13.78 and 12.21 μg mL–1, respectively. The IC50 values of 20ME from A. flabelliformis and Laurencia okamurae were 13.84 and 106.15 μg mL–1. Those of the 70ME from Bonnemaisonia hamifera, Grateloupia filicina, Sinkoraena lancifolia, G. lanceolata, Gracilaria vermiculophylla and L. okamurae ranged from 25.82 to 124.69 μg mL–1.
Pyricularia oryzae (P. oryzae), the cause of rice blast, is one of the most important fungal pathogens of rice. Seventy strains of marine fungi were isolated from marine algae, and it was measured antifungal activity against P. oryzae. Metabolites of marine fungus A-248 which isolated from marine algae showed strong antifungal activity against P. oryzae. The antifungal substance from the metabolites of marine fungus A-248 was extracted with ethylacetate, and then purified by preparative TLC and reverse-phase HPLC. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value was $0.18\mu g/mL$ for the antifungal activity of the substance purified from A-248 metabolites. The purified substance was similar to antifungal activity of rhizoxin, which is a commercial antifungal agent.
It is preyed that marine algae, Chlorella pyrenoidosa can synthesize about 3.52% of eicosapentaenoic (EPA) of dry cell weight at the light intensity of 10 W/$\m^2$ which is optimal light intensity of producing EPA at $25^{\circ}C$. An equation to predict the amounts of EPA in the culture broth is derived as an exponential form with 0.91 of the correlation factor. The behavior of cell growth follows a photo-inhibition model by showing 12 W/$\m^2$ of saturation light intensity.
Polysaccharides of marine algae exhibit different structural characteristics and interesting biological functions. In this study, crude polysaccharides (CP) of eleven Sri Lankan marine algae obtained through hot water extraction and ethanol precipitation were investigated for DPPH, alkyl, and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities using electron spin resonance spectrometry and for intracellular reactive oxygen species scavenging activity in the Chang liver cell line. Characterization of CPs was done by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and by analysis of the monosaccharide composition. Time-dependent density functional theory quantum-chemical calculations at the RB3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level for constructed dimeric units of the corresponding polysaccharides were used to resolve the FTIR spectra. CPs from Chnoospora minima showed the highest DPPH and alkyl radical scavenging activities and higher intracellular reactive oxygen species scavenging effects for both AAPH and $H_2O_2$ induced ROS production in "Chang" cells. The major polysaccharide constituent in C. minima CP was identified as fucoidan and it displayed a higher sulfate content. The degree of sulfation of these polysaccharides suggests a positive correlation with the observed antioxidant properties.

Endophytic green algae growing in fronds of Grateloupia spp. were examined for infection frequency from their field populations of Jeju, Wando, and Uljin, Korea in August and September 2013. Three endophytes were isolated in laboratory culture from a G. lanceolata thallus collected in Jeju. Unialgal cultures were made from the endophytes, and their morphological characteristics were observed with light microscopy. In addition, a phylogenetic analysis based on chloroplast-encoded elongation factor tufA gene sequences was performed to identify the G. lanceolata endophytes. Three filamentous green endophytic species, Ulvella leptochaete, Blastophysa rhizopus, and Bolbocoleon piliferum were reported for the first time in Korea. General biological information for the three endophytes was also described.
The objective of this study was to clarify marine algal flora and community structure of 16 uninhabited islands in Sinangun area, south western coast of Korea. As a result, a total of 63 species - 11 greens, 16 browns and 36 reds - was identified. The functional groups of marine algal species were filamentous 14.3%, foliose 20.5%, corticated 45.3%, leathery 13.7%, and articulated calcareous algae 6.2%. The (R+C)/P value was calculated as 2.9 showed temperate flora. The result of DCA showed that 16 uninhabitated islands tend to be distributed eastern and western parts. The dominant species was Ulva pertusa, while the subdominats were Gelidium divaricatum, Myelophycus simplex. The vertical distribution pattern of intertidal marine algae represented three distinct zones; Gloiopeltis furcata, Myelophycus simplex, Gelidium divaricatum - Ulva pertusa, Enteromorpha spp., Ishige okamurae - Ulva pertusa, Sargassum thunbergii, Symphyocladia latiuscula.

A subtidal marine benthic algal vegetation at Ulleungdo Island, the eastern coast of Korea was investigated to clarify the community structure and vertical distribution by quadrat method at seven stations in May and August 2014. The total number of marine algal species was 148 species composed of the green algae of 12 species, the brown algae of 40 species and the red algae of 96 species. Mean biomass in dry weight was $94.8g\;dry\;weight\;m^{-2}$ in study sites, $98.1g\;dry\;weight\;m^{-2}$ in upper tidal level, and $86.6g\;dry\;weight\;m^{-2}$ in middle level. The R/P and (R+C)/P value reflecting flora characteristic were 1.9 and 2.3, respectively. Three groups produced by cluster analysis, one including sites Neunggeol, Daepung, Jukdo, second including sites Gongam, Ssangjeongcho and the other including sites Gwaneum, Hangnam, showed meaningful difference in similarity (about 40%), each other. The number of marine algal species and biomass in Ulleungdo Island area were markedly reduced comparing that in the previous studies. This result may suggest probably change of algal vegetation in future, considering the physical and chemical pollutions loaded in the coastal marine environment of this area.
