  • This paper is concerned with statistical methods for multivariate data when the number p of variables is large compared to the sample size n. Such data appear typically in analysis of DNA microarrays, curve data, financial data, etc. However, there is little statistical theory for high dimensional data. On the other hand, there are some asymptotic results under the assumption that both and p tend to $\infty$, in some ratio p/n ${\rightarrow}$c. The results suggest that the new asymptotic results are more useful and insightful than the classical large sample asymptotics. The main purpose of this paper is to review some asymptotic results for high dimensional statistics as well as classical statistics under a high dimensional asymptotic framework.

  • Horticultural traits and genetic relationship were evaluated for 83 melon (Cucumis melo L.) cultivars. Survey of a total of 36 characteristics for seedling, leaf, stem, flower, fruit, and seed and subsequent multiple analysis of variance (MANOVA) were conducted. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that 8 principle components including fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, cotyledon length, seed diameter, and seed length accounted for 76.3% of the total variance. Cluster analysis of the 83 melon cultivars using average linkage method resulted in 5 clusters at coefficient of 0.7. Cluster I consisted of cultivars with high values for fruit-related traits, Cluster II for soluble solid content, and Cluster V for high ripening rate. Genotyping of the 83 cultivars was conducted using 15 expressed-sequence tagged-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) from the Cucurbit Genomics Initiative (ICuGI) database. Analysis of genetic relatedness by UPGMA resulted in 6 clusters. Mantel test indicated that correlation between morphological and genetic distance was very low (r = -0.11).

  • The main purposes of this study were to assess Asian travelers' perceptions of service quality provided by Korean restaurants and to identify the relationships among perceived quality, satisfaction, and behavioral intentions. The survey was administered during one-month period of January-February 2009, targeting tourists from China, Taiwan, and Japan who were visiting Korea through escorted tour packages offered by several Korean travel agencies. A total of 223 copies of the questionnaire were collected for the data analyses such as descriptive statistics, factor analysis, MANOVA, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 12.0 program. The main results of this study were as follows: 1) The results of the gap analysis indicated that the service quality in several areas provided by the Korean restaurants did not meet the tourists' expectations; 2) The factor analysis identified four underlying dimensions of travelers' perceptions of overall service quality provided by Korean restaurants ("value and quality of foodservice", "menu choices", "service quality of employees", and "quality of surrounding area"); and 3) Through multiple regression analyses, three determinants ("value and quality of foodservice", "menu choices", and "service quality of employees") were found to have the greatest impact on tourists' satisfaction and behavioral intentions.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between gymnasium selection and training adherence of security martial arts trainees. To this aim, this study selected 8 gymnasiums in Gyounggi and Incheon province and sampled 220 people above the fourth grade in elementary school. Out of these, 14 cases were dropped due to insufficient answers or incomplete answers, and 206 qualified cases were finally adopted for this study. Data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis and frequency analysis, MANOVA, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis with SPSS 18.0. The results of this study were as follows. First, there were significant differences in gymnasium selection factors(instructor background, training program, public relations) depending upon the trainee's sex. Second, there were significant differences in gymnasium selection factors(training program, main others, public relations) depending upon the trainee's school grade. Third, there were no significant differences in training adherence factors depending upon the trainee's sex and school grade. Fourth, there were positive correlations between instructor background, training program and public relations-factors among gymnasium selection and management program, external and social relations-factors among training adherence. Fifth, the partial sub-factors of gymnasium selection have influenced training adherence. Consequently, security martial arts managers and instructors need to establish marketing strategies suitable for sex and school grade to recruit new security martial arts trainees. It may be considered that security martial arts instructors should construct the differentiated management system for trainees and the specialized training program for lasting training of new or existing security martial arts trainees.

  • This study explored what latent classes appear according to the combination of Belief in a Just World (BJW) and social class of middle-aged adults, and examined whether there are differences in career transiton, perceiving a calling, and working as meaning in each class and what characteristics they have. 224 middle-aged people who experienced turnover through online and offline were surveyed and analyzed by Latent Profile Analysis. The participants were divided into 5 latent classes such as; 'Relative self-satisfaction', 'Social contentment', 'Relative deprived', 'Fairness trust' and 'Fairness distrust'. According to the results of MANOVA analysis to figure out if there are differences in career transitions, perceiving a calling, and working as meaning depending on latent classes, significant differences were appeared among latent classes. Finally, multinominal logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine whether demographic characteristics and 'decent work' affect the latent group classification. As a result, the more 'decent work', the higher the probability of belonging to the class with high BJW and social class. On the basis of the results of this study, the implications on the case conceptualization and counseling strategy for adults focusing on BJW and Social class in adults and future research were discussed.

  • Purpose: This study analyze the correlation between elections and wild Fire to provide information necessary for formulating wild fire prevention and response policies. Method: Data of the Forest Service and the Meteorological Administration were used to compare the occurrence and burned area of wild fires in election and non-election years. Statistical significance between the two groups was analyzed with an independent sample t-test, and MANOVA(multivariate analysis of variance) was used to evaluate the effects of temperature and humidity. Result: There was no statistical significance in the occurrence and burn area of wild fires between election and non-election years. However, analysis of the raw data indicated significantly greater damage in election years. MANOVA revealed that election status, temperature, and humidity did not significantly impact the occurrence and burn area of large wild fires. Conclusion: Wild fire occurrence and burned area were higher election years than non-election years, possibly due to election-related social factors. Thus, enhancing wild fire prevention and response policies in election years and considering weather factors and social activites is necessary.
