  • Seaweeds are rich in in minerals, vitamins, proteins, and fiber, and are classified as green algae, and they are distributed on the coasts of Korea, East Asia, Oceania, etc. and are used as a health function material as well as food ingredients in our countries and countries. In this study, Codium fragile was extracted from ethanol and concentrated to confirm DPPH radical scavenging activity, SOD activity, FRAP and ABTS cation radical scavenging ability. As a result, DPPH scavenging activity was 0.83, 22.83, 38.27, 40.93, 45.60% at 6.25, 12.50, 25, 50 and $100{\mu}g/mL$, SOD-like activity were 23.13, 33.63, 33.93, 44.07 and 59.07%. FRAP and ABTS showed antioxidant activity in a concentration-dependent manner, as in the previous experiment. Therefore, this study confirmed that it can be used as a cosmetic material using Codium fragile, a natural material.

  • Background: To determine the prevalence of mammalian target of rapamycin phosphorylation (p-mTOR) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and any correlation with clinical characteristics and prognosis in ovarian clear cell carcinoma patients. Materials and Method: Seventy four paraffin-embedded specimens of such carcinomas frompatients who underwent surgery, received adjuvant chemotherapy and were followed up at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital during January 2002 to December 2008 were stained with rabbit monoclonal IgG p-mTOR and rabbit polyclonal IgG VEGF using immunohistochemical methods. Medical records were reviewed and clinical variables were analysed. Results: The prevalence of positive p-mTOR in ovarian clear cell carcinoma was 87.9% and significantly higher in advance-stage than early-stage patients (100% versus 83.6%, P<0.05). Two-year disease free survival and 2-year overall survival in patients with positive p-mTOR expression were 60% and 69.2% with no differences from patients with negative p-mTOR expression (p>0.05). The prevalence of VEGF expression was 63.5% and significantly higher in chemo-sensitive than chemo-resistant patients (70.7% versus 37.5%, P<0.05). Two-year disease free survival and 2-year overall survival in patients with VEGF expression were 72.3% and 83% respectively which were significantly different from patients with negative VEGF expression (p<0.05). Conclusions: p-mTOR expression in ovarian clear cell carcinoma was significantly correlated with the stage of disease. VEGF expression was significantly correlated with chemosensitivity, and survival. Further studies of related targeted therapy might be promising.

  • In order to investigate the responsiveness of sun-curing tobacco varietie - CHUNGJOO YUB, HATANO and HYANGCBBO - to the Gibberellic Acid 100, 200, and 300 P.P.M. of Gillberellic Acid were sprayed in the field at the stage of just prior to stein elongation. 1. The elongation of stem and leaves were prominent at the concentration of 300 P.P.M. with 30.05~55.22% increase in the stem and 16.96~50.69% increase in the leaves. Hut their width decreased to 70.42~83.66%. 2. The number of leaves did not effected with the treatment meaningly that the elongation of stem was caused by the elongation of intermodes and not by the increase of nodes. 3.12~13.9% increase of raw leaf.es weight were resulted at the concentration of 200 P.P.M. 4. The weight of dry matter were increased by 9~12.2% at the concentration of 200 P.P.M. treatment.

  • Rhizopus soft rot caused by Rhizopus stolonifer occurred on banana (Musa sapientum) in the box at Jinju City Wholesale Market of Agricultural Products at Gyeongnam province in Korea. The infected fruits were rapidly water-soaked, softened, blackened and eventually rotted. They were infected from wounds at harvest time. The colony of the isolate from the infected fruit was white to light brown and formed many sporangiospores. The optimum growth temperature of the fungus on potato dextrose agar was $30^{\circ}C$. Sporangiophores were $12{\sim}26\;{\mu}m$ in width. Sporangia were globose or hemispheric, white at first and changed gradually to black, and $83{\sim}195\;{\mu}m$ in size. Columella were hemispheric, and $72{\sim}125\;{\mu}m$ in size. Sporangiospores were irregular round or oval, brownish-black and $9{\sim}20{\times}7{\sim}8\;{\mu}m$ in size. On the basis of symptom, mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to banana, the causal fungus was identified as Rhizopus stolonifer. This is the first report of Rhizopus soft rot by R. stolonifer on banana in Korea.

  • This study was intended to evaluate the surface dose and depth dose of according to the distance of the treatment room wall. High energy photon beams from linear accelerators produce large scattered radiation by various components of the treatment head, collimator and walls or objects in the treatment room including the patient. The scattered radiation measured by thermoluminescence dosimeter(TLD). Linear accelerators rotation center of the four walls(X) distance was measured to be 236, 272, 303, and 337 cm. The result of 100 cGy and 200 cGy of 6 MV photon irradiation, surface dose was 0.49, 0.83 mSv at 236 cm of the shortest distance to the wall, In 272 cm 0.41, 0.53 mSv, 303 cm in the 0.28, 0.57 mSv, and 337 cm distance from the wall in the 0.33, 0.76 mSv surface dose respectively. There was remarkable difference in the surface dose among the treatment room wall distance. The results of useful data in relation to stochastic effect for radiation therapy patients.

  • In H/W implementation for the finite field, the use of normal basis has several advantages, especially, the optimal normal basis is the most efficient to H/W implementation in GF($2^m$). In this paper, we propose a new, simpler, parallel multiplier over GF($2^m$) having a type II optimal normal basis, which performs multiplication over GF($2^m$) in the extension field GF($2^{2m}$). The time and area complexity of the proposed multiplier is same as the best of known type II optimal normal basis parallel multiplier.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of the Nypa fruticans extracts as a cosmetic additive. The tyrosinase inhibitory effects showed 52.0% at 1,000 ㎍/mL concentration. A cell viability test, measured on melanoma cell (B16F10) hot water extract of nypa fruticans showed 84.8% at 100 ㎍/mL concentration. The protein expression inhibitory effects of nypa fruticans extracts were measured by western blot at 25, 50, 100 ㎍/mL concentration and the β-actin. Results showed that the expression inhibition rates of the MITF, TRP-1, TRP-2, tyrosinase protein were decreased by 70.7%, 83.3%, 45.7%, 45.9% at 100 ㎍/mL concentration, respectively. It was concluded that nypa fruticans extracts had the whitening effects and thus could be applied for cosmetics as a natural ingredient.
