To reduce polarization of electrochemical capacitor based on carbon nanotube, titanium oxide nanoparticles were deposited by ultrasound. The pore distribution of $TiO_2$/CNT nanoparticle exhibited surface area of $341\;m^2g^{-1}$ when $TiO_2$ content was 4 wt %, which was better than that of pristine CNT with surface area of $188\;m^2g^{-1}$. The analyses indicated that titanium oxide (particle diameter < 20 nm) was deposited on the CNT surface. The electrochemical performance was evaluated by using cyclic voltammetry (CV), impedance measurement, and constant-current charge/discharge cycling techniques. The $TiO_2$/CNT composite electrode showed relatively better electrochemical behaviors than CNT electrode by increasing the specific capacitance from $22\;Fg^{-1}$ to $37\;Fg^{-1}$ in 1 M $H_2SO_4$ solution. A symmetric cell assembled with the composite electrodes showed the specific capacitance value of $11\;Fg^{-1}$ at a current loading of $0.5\;mAcm^{-2}$ during initial cycling.
The purpose of this study was to observe characteristic properties of amalgam through the polarization curves and SEM images from 4 type amalgams (Amalcap, Shofu spherical. Dispersalloy and Tytin) with 3 different surface finish procedures (polishing, burnishing and carving) by using the potentiostats (EG & GPARC) and SEM (Jeol JSM-35). After each amalgam alloy and Hg was triturated as the direction of the manufacturer by means of mechanical amalgamator (Samki), the triturated mass was inserted into the cylndrical metal mold which was 12 mm in diameter and 10 mm in height and was pressed with $100kg/cm^2$. 4 specimens of each type amalgam were burnished with egg burnisher and another 4 specimens of each type amalgam were carved with Hollenback carver. Above 8 specimens and remaining untreated 4 specimens were stored at room temperature for about 7 days. Untreated 4 specimens of each type amalgam were polished with abrasive papers (Deer) from #400 to #1200 and finally on the polishing cloth with $0.5{\mu}m$ and $0.06{\mu}m$$Al_2O_3 $ powder suspended water. Anodic polarization measurements was employed to compare the corrosion behaviours of the amalgams in 0.9% saline solution at $37^{\circ}C$. The open circuit potential was determined after 30 minutes immersion of specimen in electrolyte. The scan rate was 1 mV/sec and the surface area of amalgam exposed to the solution was $0.64cm^2$ for each specimen. All the potentials reported are with respect to a saturated calomel electrode (SCE). SEM images of each specimen were taken after + 800 mV (SCE) polarization. The results were as follows: 1. The corrosion potential of high copper amalgam was more anodic than that of low copper amalgam. 2. The polished amalgam were more resistant to corrosion than any other burnished and carved amalgam. 3. In the case of polishing, current density of high copper amalgam was lower than that of low copper amalgam.
The purpose of this study was to observe characteristic properties through the polarization curves and SEM images from 4 different types of amalgam obtained by using the potentiostats (Princeton EG & G) & SEM (Jeol/35), and to investigate the degree of corrosion on the oxidation peak of the each phase of amalgam. After each amalgam alloy and Hg was triturated as the direction of the manufacturer by means of the mechanical amalgamator (Shofu Co.), the triturated mass was inserted into the cylindrical metal mold which was 12mm in diameter and 10.0mm in height and was condensed by using routine manner. The specimen was removed from the mold and stored at room temperature for about 24 hours. The standard surface preparation was routinely carried out. Anodic polarization measurement was employed to confirm the corrosion behaviour of the amalgams in a 0.9% saline solution (P.H: 6.8-7.0) at $37^{\circ}C$. The initial rest potential (corrosion potential) was determined after 30 minutes of immersion of specimen in electrolyte, and the potential scan was begun at the point of 100mV cathodic from the corrosion potential. The scan rate was 0.17mV/sec. in the study to observe the degree of corrosion of each phase. SEI and EPMA images on the determined oxidation peaks of each amalgam were observed. The results were as follows: 1. In the four anodic polarization curves, low copper amalgams have three oxidation peaks and high copper amalgams have two oxidation peaks, -270mV, +26mV and +179mV(SEC) in the low copper lathe cut, and -300mV, +39mV and +163mV(SEC) in the low copper spherical. -4mV and +154mV(SEC) in the Dispersalloy, and +17mV and +180mV(SEC) in the Tytin as high copper amalgams. 2. ${\gamma}_2$ phase in the low copper amalgam and ${\eta}$ phase in the high copper amalgam were the most corrodible phases and Ag-Cu eutectic in high copper amalgam was the most slowly corroded phase. 3. Low copper amalgam was more susceptible in corrosion than high copper amalgam.
The pitting corrosion and inhibition studies of AZ31B magnesium alloy were investigated in the alkaline solution (pH12) with chloride and inhibitors. The corrosion behavior of passive film with/without Cl- in the alkaline electrolyte were conducted by polarization curve and immersion tests in the presence of various additives (inhibitors) to clarify the inhibition efficiency of pitting corrosion at higher potential region. Critical concentration of pitting corrosion for Mg alloy was evaluated with 0.005 M NaCl in 0.01 M NaOH on the anodic polarization behavior. Critical pitting of AZ31B Mg alloy in 0.01 M NaOH is a function of chlorides; Epit = - 1.36 - 0.2 log [Cl-]. When the Sodium Benzoate (SB) was only used as an inhibitor, a few metastable pits developed on the Mg surface by an immersion test despite no pitting corrosion on the polarization curve meaning that adsorption of SB on the surface is insufficient protection from pitting corrosion in the presence of chloride. The role of SB and Sodium Dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) inhibitors for the Mg alloy surface in the presence of chloride was suppressed from pitting corrosion to co-adsorb on the Mg alloy surface with strong formation of passive film preventing pitting corrosion.

A polarization fluorescence correlation spectroscopy system based on a confocal microscope was built to study the rotational and translational diffusion of CdSe/CdS quantum rods (Q-rods), with the same and different polarization states between the polarizer and the analyzer (i.e. the XXX and XYY states). The rotational diffusion amplitude showed the dependences on polarization of $0.75{\pm}0.05$ in the XXX state and $0.26{\pm}0.03$ in the XYY state, when the translational diffusion amplitude was 1. The diffusion coefficients of the Q-rods were found based on their translational and rotational diffusion times in the two polarization states, in solutions with viscosity ranging from 0.9 to 6.9 cP. The translational and rotational diffusion coefficients ranged from $1.5{\times}10^{-11}$ to $2.6{\times}10^{-12}m^2s^{-1}$ and from $2.9{\times}10^5$ to $5.6{\times}10^4s^{-1}$, respectively.
We report, for the first time to our knowledge, observation of polarization bistability from 1.55-${\mu}m$ wavelength single-mode VCSELs of a conventional cylinder-shape under control of their driving current, and demonstration of all-optical flip-flop (AOFF) operations based on the bistability with optical set and reset pulse injection at a 50 MHz switching frequency. The injection pulse energy was less than 14 fJ. The average on-off contrast ratio of the flip-flopped signals was about 7 dB. These properties of the VCSELs will be potentially useful for future high-speed all-optical signal processing applications.
The air gap membrane distillation (AGMD) process was applied for water desalination. The main objective of the present work was to study the heat and mass transfer mechanism of the process. The experiments were performed on a flat sheet module using aqueous NaCl solutions as a feed. The membrane employed was hydrophobic PTFE of pore size 0.22 ${\mu}m$. A mathematical model is proposed to evaluate the membrane mass transfer coefficient, thermal boundary layers' heat transfer coefficients, membrane / liquid interface temperatures and the temperature polarization coefficients. The mass transfer model was validated by the experimentally and fitted well with the combined Knudsen and molecular diffusion mechanism. The mass transfer coefficient increased with an increase in feed bulk temperature. The experimental parameters such as, feed temperature, 313 to 333 K, feed velocity, 0.8 to 1.8 m/s (turbulent flow region) were analyzed. The permeation fluxes increased with feed temperature and velocity. The effect of feed bulk temperature on the boundary layers' heat transfer coefficients was shown and fairly discussed. The temperature polarization coefficient increased with feed velocity and decreased with temperature. The values obtained were 0.56 to 0.82, indicating the effective heat transfer of the system. The fouling was observed during the 90 h experimental run in the application of natural ground water and seawater. The time dependent fouling resistance can be added in the total transport resistance.

The electrochemical behavior on electrographite and graphite foil electrode with porous surface in 0.5 M $K_{2}SO_{4}$ solution with 1 mM $[Fe(CN)_{6}]^{3-}/[Fe(CN)_{6}]^{4-}$ have been characterized by impedance spectroscopy. In cyclic voltammograms, relative high current according to structure of porous surface for graphite materials was represented, and indicated hgih double layer capacitance on graphite foil. The faraday-impedance and the change of impedance spectrum on both graphite materials were not remarkable during polarization by reaction of field transport. Chemical adsorption was represented on electrographite and was depended highly at anodic polarization.

Inhibiting action of semicarbazide, thiosemicarbazide, sym. diphenylcarbazide towards corrosion of zinc in hydrochloric acid has been investigated. The rate of corrosion depends on the nature of the inhibitor and its concentration. The values of inhibition efficiency from, weight loss, thermometric measurements are in good agreement with those obtained from polarization studies. From the polarization studies, the inhibitors used act as mixed absorption type inhibitors, increased adsorption resulting from an increase in the electron density at the reactive C=S and C=O groups and N-atoms. The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption obtained using Bockris-Swinkels adsorption isotherm reveal a strong interaction of these carbazides on zinc surface.

The piezoelectricity and polarization of multilayer ceramic actuators, being designed to stack ceramic layer and electrode layer alternately, were investigated under a consideration of geometry, the thickness ratio of the ceramic layer to electrode layer The actuators were fabricated by tape-casting of $0.42PbTiO_3-0.38PbZrO_3-0.2Pb(Mn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$ followed by laminating, burn-out and co-firing process. The actuators of $5\times5mm^2$ in area were formed in a way that $60{\sim}200{\mu}m$ thick ceramics were stacked 10 times alternately with $5{\mu}m$ thick electrode. Increase in polarization and electric field-displacement with increasing thickness ratio of the ceramic/electrode layer and thickness/cross section ratio were attributed to the change of $non-180^{\circ}/180^{\circ}$ domain ratio which was affected by the interlayer internal stress and Poisson ratio of ceramic layer. The piezoelectricity and actuation behaviors were found to be dependent upon the volume ratio (or thickness ratio) of ceramic layer relative to ceramic layer. Concerning with the existence of internal stress, the field-induced polarization and deformation were described in the multilayer actuator.
