  • Whole plant cultures of Centella asiatica (L.) Urban in vitro were established and the effects of basal media, some macro elements and sucrose concentration on productivity of triterpene glycosides (madecassoside and asiaticoside: M$\varepsilon$A) were investigated. Among the media (MS, B5, RCM) tested, MS and 0.5 RCM medium were the best for plant growth and M$\varepsilon$A production, respectively. However, taking into account the M$\varepsilon$A productivity, B5 medium was superior (M$\varepsilon$A: 14.28 mg/g dry wt.). Major macronutrients of B5 medium adjusted with the concentration of 25 mM KNO$_3$,1 mM NaH$_2$PO$_4$, 1 mM CaCl$_2$ and 1~10 mM MgSO$_4$, caused elevated or optimized levels of M$\varepsilon$A. On sucrose concentration, the highest yields of M$\varepsilon$A were obtained from 6% sucrose.

  • Purpose - A rapidly changing business environment places great demands on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). These SMEs need to find strategic alternatives for continued growth and, ultimately, survival. Thus, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are deemed an acceptable solution. Research to date has dealt with M&A in major organizations and focused on post merger integration (PMI). Our study focuses on SMEs, as they are relatively new and unknown to the public. Therefore, this study highlights successful M&A and decision making for SMEs through a case study analysis. Research design, data, and methodology - For this study, we examined an M&A case between company S, which produces cell phone parts, and company P, which produces SSD cases. We reviewed theories and previous studies in M&A literature. We comprehensively examined the decision-making procedure at each M&A stage, describing the situation of the buying company and the selling company from the period of the M&A announcement through deal completion. In addition, we conducted interviews with both companies. The data regarding this case study were collected through interviews with managers of both companies who actively participated in the M&A process. When necessary, we asked them about additional relevant information during the interviews. Results - The result of the M&A between company S and company P was deemed acceptable with the exception of the long negotiation period. However, company S was not able to prepare for PMI after the acquisition due to a controversy over acquisition values. Moreover, the employees of the newly formed company, especially those who came from company P, complained about the M&A and attempted to leave. Thus, implications for successful M&As of SMEs are as follows: First, the procedural compliance of the M&A is needed. Second, support is needed from the CEO for the working group, rather than excessive intervention during due diligence. Third, the right, talented members of the organization should be part of the process of the M&A. Fourth, the use of various types of outside expert or business consultants is needed. Fifth, the strategic intervention by Human Resource managers is required. Last, sharing M&A information among employees is important as information dissemination will help employees be more receptive to such a change. However, this study has several limitations as a single case study; more varied SME M&A case studies are needed in order to generalize the results of the study. Conclusions - Most of the research dealing with M&As has focused on major companies and PMI and neglected SMEs. Thus, our study focuses on SMEs and the decision-making procedures for M&A. This study has significantly contributed to the literature in this area and has provided practical information around the implications of sound decision-making during M&As. Specifically, the results of the study contribute to the need for research on M&A among SMEs, which to date has often been neglected as a topic of choice.

  • M&A is an important strategic decision made to ensure the competitiveness of companies and cases of M&A have been increasing in recent years. But the success of an M&A is not assured. In order to succeed, there should first be a well managed strategic leadership by the CEO and an integration strategy. Companies need also to overcome the resistance to change among members. A successful example of an M&A is that of LG Chem and Hyundai Petrochemical. By using this M&A as a case study, the influence of the CEO's Strategic Leadership, and the Integration Strategy on Resistance, Acceptance and Performance were assessed. For this study, research was conducted on CEO Strategic Leadership and Integration Strategy before members of LG Chem (DAESAN PLANT) were interviewed on the M&A's implementation by LG Chem's HR staff, management and members. The results show that CEO strategic leadership and the integration strategy are major change drivers and that they are important to the early stabilization of M&A companies. Finally, suggestions are made as to how such success may be replicated for other companies undergoing M&A in the future.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the adequacy of an alternative a.m.-p.m. testing scheme for milk yield in comparison with the official test method based on weighing two milkings within 24 h. A total of 8,309 p.m. milking weights and 6,767 a.m. milking weights from 72 Holstein cows raised at N.L.R.I. were collected between October 2000 and November 2001. Ratios were computes for daily milk yield to a.m. and p.m. milking weights(direct yield ratios) and ratios of a.m. and p.m. milking weights to daily milk yield (inverse yield ratios). Analysis of variance indicated that the milking interval is the most important source of variation for yield ratios. Adjustment factors for estimating daily milk yield from single milking weights were derived through regression analysis of direct and inverse yield ratios on the length of the milking interval. Daily milk yield was estimated more precisely and accurately when adjustment factors were used than when single milking weights were doubled. In conclusion, alternative recording of a.m. and p.m. milking weights led to reliable estimates of milk yields.

  • The present investigation was performed to elucidate the effect of pretreatment with low dose ultraviolet radiation (UV) and ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) on cell survival by trypan blue dye exclusion method and plasma membrane glycoconjugates by lectin-cytochemistry in sarcoma 180 (S180) cells. Pretreatment with 2 J/$m^2$ UV or 2 mM EMS increased the percentage of survival of cells subsequently treated with high dose UV (10 or 20 J/$m^2$) or EMS (10 or 20 mM), respectively. Staining intensity of concanavalin A (Con A) of the cells pretreated with 2J/$m^2$ UV or 2 mM EMS and subsequently treated with 10 or 20 mM EMS was stronger than that of the cellstreated with 10 or 20 mM EMS. These results suggest that there is an adaptive response on cell survival to EMS or UV in S180 cells. And the results show a change in mannose-containing glycoconjugates of plasma membrane in S180 cells pretreated with EMS or UV and subsequently treated with EMS.

  • We have made modulation doped SMQW-PBH-DFB-LD for high speed optical communications. The waveguide and barrier layers were doped by Zn with the concentration of $1.2 \times 10^{18}cm^{-1}$. Mean threshold current and slope efficiency were 24.88 mA (minimum 16 mA) and 0.197 mW/mA (maximum 0.275 mW/mA) respectively. Linewidth enhancement factor ($\alpha$) of MD-SMQW-PBH-DFB-LD was reduced than that of SMQW-PBH-DFB-LD. Linewidth enhancement factor of 1.8 owes to the large gain coefficient of modulation doped active layer. The resonance frequency was linearly increased with the square root of optical power. The resonance frequency in small signal modulation was measured as 8 GHz and -3 dB modulation bandwidth was 10 GHzat $46mA(I_{th}+30mA)$..

  • Nargenicin $A_1$ is a 28-membered polyketide macrolide, with antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, produced by Nocardia sp. CS682. In this study, the production of nargenicin $A_1$ was improved by enhancing the supply of different biosynthetic precursors. In Nocardia sp. CS682 (KCTC11297BP), this improvement was ~4.62-fold with the supplementation of 30 mM methyl oleate, 4.25-fold with supplementation of 15mM sodium propionate, and 2.81-fold with supplementation of 15 mM sodium acetate. In Nocardia sp. metK18 and Nocardia sp. CS682 expressing S-adenosylmethionine synthetase (MetK), the production of nargenicin $A_1$ was improved by ~5.57-fold by supplementation with 30 mM methyl oleate, 5.01-fold by supplementation with 15 mM sodium propionate, and 3.64-fold by supplementation with 15 mM sodium acetate. Furthermore, supplementing the culture broth of Nocardia sp. ACC18 and Nocardia sp. CS682 expressing the acetyl-CoA carboxylase complex (AccA2 and AccBE) with 30 mM methyl oleate, 15 mM sodium propionate, or 15 mM sodium acetate resulted in ~6.99-, 6.46-, and 5.58-fold increases, respectively, in nargenicin $A_1$ production. Our overall results showed that among the supplements, methyl oleate was the most effective precursor supporting the highest titers of nargenicin $A_1$ in Nocardia sp. CS682, Nocardia sp. metK18, and Nocardia sp. ACC18.

  • Let I be an ideal of Noetherian local ring (R, m) and M an artinian R-module. In this paper, we study colocalization of local homology modules. In fact we give Colocal-global Principle for the artinianness and minimaxness of local homology modules, which is a dual case of Local-global Principle for the finiteness of local cohomology modules. We define the representation dimension rI (M) of M and the artinianness dimension aI (M) of M relative to I by rI (M) = inf{i ∈ ℕ0 : HIi (M) is not representable}, and aI (M) = inf{i ∈ ℕ0 : HIi (M) is not artinian} and we will prove that i) aI (M) = rI (M) = inf{rIR𝖕 (𝖕M) : 𝖕 ∈ Spec(R)} ≥ inf{aIR𝖕 (𝖕M) : 𝖕 ∈ Spec(R)}, ii) inf{i ∈ ℕ0 : HIi (M) is not minimax} = inf{rIR𝖕 (𝖕M) : 𝖕 ∈ Spec(R) ∖ {𝔪}}. Also, we define the upper representation dimension RI (M) of M relative to I by RI (M) = sup{i ∈ ℕ0 : HIi (M) is not representable}, and we will show that i) sup{i ∈ ℕ0 : HIi (M) ≠ 0} = sup{i ∈ ℕ0 : HIi (M) is not artinian} = sup{RIR𝖕 (𝖕M) : 𝖕 ∈ Spec(R)}, ii) sup{i ∈ ℕ0 : HIi (M) is not finitely generated} = sup{i ∈ ℕ0 : HIi (M) is not minimax} = sup{RIR𝖕 (𝖕M) : 𝖕 ∈ Spec(R) ∖ {𝔪}}.

  • Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring and let M be an Artinian R-module. Let M${\subseteq}$M′ be submodules of M. Suppose F is an R-module which is projective relative to M. Then it is shown that $Att_{R}$($Hom_{A}$ (F,M′) :$Hom_{A}$(F,M) $In^n$), n ${\in}$N and $Att_{R}$($Hom_{A}$(F,M′) :$Hom_{A}$(F,M) In$^n$ $Hom_{A}$(F,M") :$Hom_{A}$(F,M) $In^n$),n ${\in}$ N are ultimately constant.
