  • We hypothesized that the unsaturated fatty acid palmitoleic acid (POA) could promote the expression of adipogenic/lipogenic genes in bovine skeletal muscle satellite cells (BSCs). The BSCs were cultured in a growth medium containing 10% fetal bovine serum. When the cells reached 80%-90% confluence, we used the differentiation medium with 5% horse serum for differentiation for 96 h. The differentiation medium contained 50 µM, 100 µM and 200 µM POA. Control BSC were cultured only in differentiation media. Compared with the control BSC, the POA BSC significantly up-regulated the expression of paired box 3 (Pax3) and paired box 7 (Pax7) and down-regulated myogenin gene expression (p < 0.01), which indicates a depression in muscle fiber development. However, all POA treatments up-regulated the expression of the adipocyte transcription factors peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein alpha and beta (C/EBP α and C/EBP β), and other genes (p < 0.01) and increased the expression of PAT-family proteins and the concentration of adiponectin in the media. These results indicate that POA can convert part of BSCs into adipocytes.

  • Based on the user-centered innovation theory of von Hippel (2005), this research seeks to provide a case study of user innovation in the automobile navigation industry, which is a representative applied service in the area of Location-Based Service (LBS). The automobile navigation development and maintenance/repair processes of M&Soft are analyzed around the seven characteristics of user innovation as outlined by von Hippel. As a result, among the three strategic responses of sellers in the successful utilization of user innovation, it was determined that the approach of M&Soft was limited to providing an easy-to-use information technology platform so as to encourage members to easily share all types of map or mobile information or ideas. The significance of this paper is in that the theory of von Hippel originally based on physical products was applied to digital ones in line with the trend of increasing importance of Internet-based content services.

  • Objective: Growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) play a critical role in animal growth rates. We aimed to investigate the effect of GH and IGF-I genotypes on body weight (BW), dominance, and gene expression in slow-growing chickens at different ages. Methods: A total of 613 Korat chickens (KRs) were bred and divided into three groups by genotype - A1A1, A1A3, and A3A3 for GH and AA, AC, and CC for IGF-I. Chickens were weighed every two weeks, and liver and breast muscle tissues were collected at 10 weeks of age. Genetic parameters of KRs were estimated using ASReml software. The GH and IGF-I mRNA levels were measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Significant differences between traits were analyzed using the generalized linear model. Results: A significant effect of GH genotypes on BW was found at most ages, and the A1A1 genotype had the highest value of BW. Compared with the A3A3 genotype, the A1A1 and A1A3 genotypes showed a higher dominance effect at 0 and 2 weeks, and genotype A1A1 had the highest value of dominance at 8 weeks of age. A difference in GH mRNA levels between genotypes was detected in breast muscle at 6 weeks and in the liver tissue at 2 weeks. In the case of IGF-I gene, the AA genotype had the highest BW at the beginning of life. Significant differences in BW dominance were found at 2 weeks. However, IGF-I mRNA levels were not different among genotypes in both breast muscles and liver tissues. Conclusion: Our results revealed that GH and IGF-I influence growth, but may not be involved in heterosis. GH can be used as a marker gene in selection programs for growth because the homozygous genotype (A1A1) had the highest BW at all ages. The IGF-I is not a useful marker gene for selection programs.

  • A V-band low-noise amplifiers (LNA) based on the Millimeter-wave monolithic integrated circuit (MIMIC) technology were fabricated using high performance 0.1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ $\Gamma$-shaped pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistors (PHEMT's), coplanar waveguide (CPW) structures and the integrated process for passive and active devices. The low-noise designs resulted in a two-stage MIMIC LNA with a high S$\sub$21/ gain of 14.9 dB and a good matching at 60 ㎓. 20 dBm of IP3 and 3.9 dB of minimum noise figure were also obtained from the LNA. The 2-stage LNA was designed in a chip size of 2.3 ${\times}$1.4 mm$^2$by using 70 $\mu\textrm{m}$ ${\times}$2 PHEMT’s. These results demonstrate that a good low-noise performance and simultaneously with a high gain performance is achievable with GaAs PHEMT's in the 60 ㎓ band.
