The purpose of this study aims to analyze the comparative effects of luxury consumption behavior for Chinese consumers. Many research have been conducted in luxury consumption behavior based on perspective of culture, brand, and purchase motives. However, previous studies seem somewhat limited in fully explaining luxury consumption behavior due to less understanding of consumers' psychological trait. In order to fill this gap, this study adopts narcissism (overt narcissism and covert narcissism) to explain consumers' psychological trait. Based on specific psychological trait, consumers would lead to different luxury purchasing behavior depending on purchase motives. Especially, overt narcissism would show high tendency of self-esteem, arrogance, which means that it is closely related to need for uniqueness. Conversely, covert narcissism would show high sensitivity to others, which indicate that it is involved with need for approval. Also, each narcissism would result in different behavior for luxury purchasing based on generation difference (20-30s, vs. 40-50s). The result of this study shows that overt narcissism, covert narcissism, need for uniqueness, need for approval have significant influence on luxury consumption behavior. Especially, overt narcissism has interaction effect with need for uniqueness and young generation (in the 20s, 30s) for luxury purchasing behavior. On the other hand, it was found that covert narcissism has no interaction effect with other variables.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between consumption behavior and fashion orientation for luxury brands in Japanese and Korean consumers. For this study, the author carried out a questionnaire survey with objects of 816 Koreans and Japanese, and analyzed the relations among consumer attitude, purchase behavior, lifestyle and fashion orientation. First, in Korea, all fashion orientations gave positive effects on attitude toward luxury brands, and especially it has a significant relation with factors affecting luxury brand consumption, so when luxury enterprises establish a marketing strategy for Koreans, they need to refer to fashion orientation intensively. Second, as a result of analyzing the relation between fashion orientation and purchasing behavior, it was found that fashion interest is an important factor affecting luxury brand purchasing behaviors, in both Japan and Korea. Third, Japanese luxury brand enterprises need to focus on consumers who prefer standard goods. while Korean enterprises need to focus on consumers who prefer specific brands. Lastly, in case of Japanese consumers, the more they pursue self-esteem and reasonable consumption, the higher they prefer standard goods, while the more Korean consumers pursue conspicuous consumption, hedonic consumption and self-esteem, the higher Koreans prefer specific brands.
The purpose of this research was to examine the trend of women consumption value and attitude on luxury goods and to analyse the relations between the behavior of purchasing luxury goods and satisfaction of consumers who buy luxury items. A total of 548 questionnaires were obtained in July and August 2011 from female respondents in their 20s to 40s who have bought at least one luxury item in the last 3 years. Collected data was analysed with factor analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan's test, and multiple regression in SPSS. The research results are summarized as follows: First, household income and personal expenditure were main factors in determining substantial differences in attitudes towards luxury goods and counterfeits. Second, the difference in frequency of buying luxury items was decided by household income, and expenditure and purchase cost, which varied based on age, education, occupation, household income, and expenditure. Third, both the younger consumers with more household income and expenditure and consumers with positive attitude towards luxury items but negative attitude towards the counterfeits purchased the luxury goods more frequently than those who are older with less incomes and expenditures. Fourth, consumers with more incomes and expenditures along with negative attitude towards the counterfeits spent more money on the luxury items. Consumers with less personal ostentation but with great pleasure consumption value for luxury goods spent more money on luxury goods. Fifth, the satisfactions of purchasing luxury goods were influenced by following variables such as positive attitudes toward luxury goods, ostentation, enjoyment and quality in consumption value.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of social-face sensitivity, conspicuous consumption, and preference of luxury fashion goods on purchasing behavior of fashion counterfeits. The questionnaire was administered to 600 women in their teens to thirties in Gwangju. The data from 519 participant were analyzed using the SPSS 14.0 Package. Frequency, factor analysis, regression analysis and path analysis were used to analysis the data. The results indicate that social-face sensitivity, conspicuous consumption and the preference of luxury fashion goods has significant effect on purchasing behavior of fashion counterfeits respectively. The direct effect of social-face sensitivity on purchasing behavior of fashion counterfeits was somewhat stronger than the indirect effect of social-face sensitivity on purchasing behavior of fashion counterfeits through conspicuous consumption and preference of fashion luxury goods.
The current study aimed to segment Mongolian female consumers based on luxury consumption values and to compare lifestyle, demographic characteristics, purchase behavior, and perceived brand personality among the segments. The survey was administered to consumers who had purchased luxury products in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. A total of 184 surveys were used for data analysis. Exploratory factor analysis revealed five luxury values: quality value, hedonic value, conspicuous value, social value, and unique value. Using the five luxury values, clustering analysis was conducted, showing that there were four distinct segments: passive shoppers, showoffs, rational value groups, and hedonists. ANOVAs and chi-square analyses revealed that these four segments differed in consumption values, demographic characteristics, lifestyle dimensions (including appearance consciousness, leisure orientation, life enjoyment, and achievement orientation), and purchase behavior (including purchase frequency, price of products purchased, and product selection criteria). Moreover, value segments showed differences in five dimensions of luxury brand personality: sincerity, professionalism/attractiveness, excitement, materialism, and sophistication. The results suggest that consumption values serve as a significant basis for segmentation. Furthermore, the current study indicates that value segments can be described as consumers' perceived brand personality. The study concludes with a discussion of the results, theoretical and practical implications, and limitations.
The purpose of this study was to examine fashion luxury brand purchasing behavior among young women, and to find variables which influenced on their behavior. 993 women living in Seoul and its suburb were surveyed for this study. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, factor analysis, ANOVA, and regression were used for this study. As the result, approximately 66.3% of respondents had purchased fashion luxury products before such as Burburry, DKNY, and Louis Vuitton. Generally, the frequencies of purchasing toward the luxury products were associated with materialism, conspicious consumption, reference group influence, and ethnocentrism. Also, results revealed that materialism and conspicuous consumption accounted for 43% of the explained variance in the frequency of purchasing products. Based on these results, fashion marketing strategies would be suggested.
For Korea which has long been highly dependent on international trade for economic growth, the importance of the Brazilian market is likely to increase in the future considering its huge size of 216 million people. Therefore, it would be imperative to analyze and understand Brazilian consumer behavior correctly. This study examines differences in consumer behavior between Brazil and Korea in purchasing luxury goods. According to previous cultural studies, Brazilian consumers are expected to focus on the intrinsic value of products and show a strong compensatory consumption tendency, while Korean consumers focus on symbolic benefits and show a weak compensatory consumption tendency. After conducting and analyzing a survey of young people in their 20s in Korea and in Brazil, all of the hypotheses above were supported. The results suggests that when designing marketing communication strategy in Brazil, it will be more effective when communication is focused on the pleasure of purchasing luxury goods rather than social or symbolic benefits. This study is of greatest significance in that it is one of the few studies comparing the characteristics of Brazilian and Korean consumers.
Purpose - This study investigated the relationship among cultural disposition (Chemyeon, Noonchi, Woozzul), media use, and attitude toward luxury goods consumption. Research design, data, and methodology - We analyzed online survey data for 300 Korean Women between 20 and 39 years of age who lived in Seoul, capital of South Korea. We used multiple regression analysis to examine the relative influence of cultural orientation on cognition of luxury goods, Sobel test. to determine mediating effect, and a two-way analysis of variance in IBM SPSS 23.0. Results - The finding suggests that cultural disposition (Chemyeon, Noonchi, conspicuous Woozzul) correlated significantly with perceived self-identity, attitude toward luxury goods. The effects of Chemyeon, Noonchi, and selfish Woozzul on the attitude toward luxury goods was fully mediated by perceived self-identity. However, association between conspicuous Woozzul and attitude toward luxury goods was partially mediated by perceived self-identity. Regarding media effects, the results indicate that there were interaction effects between selfish Woozzul and amount of time spent on TV on attitude toward luxury goods, as well as between selfish Woozzul and amount of time spent on Internet. Conclusions - These findings suggest that luxury goods consumption of Korean young women is consumer behavior that reflects individual cultural disposition and media use.
This study explores whether consumers' sustainable luxury purchase (SLP), which refers to luxury consumers' conscientious purchase behavior of "buying luxury for its timeless style and durable quality that leads to extended product usage and less waste," leads to luxury consumer pleasure (LCP). Furthermore, the current study examines whether LCP leads to positive post-purchase behavior reflected by sustainable divestment intention (SDI) and repurchase intention (RI). In addition, by building on Coping Theory, we explore whether luxury consumer guilt (LCG) positively moderates the relationship between LCP and SDI. Our empirical findings of the SEM analysis based on 452 valid responses demonstrate the significant relationships between SLP and LCP, between LCP and SDI, and between LCP and RI. This implies the importance of SLP in creating a favorable consumer response, which further leads to consumers' intentions to make a sustainable divestment and to repurchase luxury. Furthermore, the critical moderating role LCG plays in the relationship between LCP and SDI was supported, stressing the importance of guilt as a trigger of consumers' sustainable divestment behavior.
