EnhAnced Electric Double Layer Capacitance of New Poly Sodium 4-tyrenesulfonate Intercalated Graphene Oxide Electrodes

  • We synthesized a new composite of poly sodium 4-styrenesulfonate intercalated graphene oxide for energy storage devices by controlling oxidation time in the synthesis of graphite oxide. Specific capacitance was improved from 20 F/g of the previous composites to 88 F/g of the new composite at the current density of 0.3 A/g. The capacitance retention was 94% after 3000 cycles, indicating that the new composites of high cyclic stability, prominent performance as electric double layer capacitor, and even low resistance could be an excellent carbon based electrode for further energy storage devices.

  • To evaluate possible teratogenicity of food additives such as sodium propionate and monosodium glutamate, 300 haching eggs were subjected to potential mutagenicity assay by administration of low and high doses of the materials via york and air sac. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Mortality rate of chick embryo was increased significantly by dosage related in the group of sodium propiorate and monosodium glutamate when compared to placebo and non-treated group. 2. Frequency of embryo with malformation in treated group was not increased significantly when compared to placebo and non-treated group.

심근 수축에 있어서 Calcium작용의 조절에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Regulation of Calcium Activity in Myocardial Contraction)

  • 전기장 자극으로 수축을 유발한 흰쥐 좌심방에서, 자극 빈도 변경에 따른 수축 운동의 변동에 미치는, 여러 경로를 통한 수축 유발 calcium의 영향을 검색하므로, 각 경로가 심근 수축에 미치는 영향을 추구하였다. 흰쥐 좌심방은 자극 빈도를 급격하게 낮추므로, 특징적인 삼단계 변동을 나타내었다. 즉, 처음의 급격한 수축 장력증가와, 두번째 일시적인 빠른 장력감소, 이어서 세번째로 수축장력의 유지단계로 나타났으며, 이때 수축장력은 고빈도 자극시의 2배 정도가 되었다. Caffeine처치는 이와같은 자극빈도 하강에 따른 수축 장력의 증가를 현저하게 억압하였다. Verapamil은 고빈도 자극시 수축 운동을 완전히 소실시켰으나, 저빈도 자극으로 변경시에는 verapamil 존재하에서도 수축 운동이 소생되었다. 한편 ouabain처치나 영양액내 sodium 배제시에는 저빈도 자극으로 나타나는 특징적인 두번째 단계의 변동이 소실되었다. 이러한 결과로 보아, 심근막의 calcium통로는 세포내 유지에 필수불가결한 경로이며, 심근 수축 유발 calcium의 주된 기원은 근 소포체로 부터 유리되는 것으로 믿어진다. 또한 sodium-calcium교환은 세포내 sodium농도의 변동에 따라 수축 유발 calcium양 형성에 조절 인자로서의 기능을 갖는 것으로 추측된다.

흡수촉진제인 지방산염이 토끼의 비강점막 균질액에서 인슐린 분해에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Fatty Acid Salts on Proteolysis of Insulin in the Nasal Tissue Homogenates of Rabbits)

  • The purpose of this study was (i) to determine whether protease inhibition by medium chain fatty acids such as sodium caprate, sodium caprylate and sodium laurate led to suppression of insulin proteolysis over a range of insulin concentrations and (ii) elucidate preventing effect of the enhancers on molecular self-association of insulin in pH 7.4 phosphate buffer isotonic solution. To this end, the rate of insulin proteolysis in nasal tissue supernatants of the albino rabbits was determined in the presence of $0.1{\sim}2%$ sodium caprylate, sodium caprate and sodium laurate at insulin concentrations ranging from $5\;to\;100\;{\mu}M$. At fatty acid salts concentration lower than 0.5%, insulin proteolysis was accelerated but the enhancers of high concentration (>1%) reduced the rate of insulin proteolysis. These effects were dependent upon insulin concentration and chain length of fatty acid salts. Circular dichroism spectra of insulin solutions were then determined. Monomer fraction of insulin was increased with increasing sodium caprate. Therefore, half-life decrease of insulin at low concentrations of the enhancers was attributed to deaggregation of insulin by the enhancers, increasing the proportion of monomers available for nasal proteolysis. And the increase of half-life at high concentration of the enhancers was attributed to inhibitory effect on protease rather than the effect of monomer fraction.

Effect of nutrition education in reducing sodium intake and increasing potassium intake in hypertensive adults

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Hypertension is the major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, a leading cause of deaths in Korea. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a nutrition education in reducing sodium intake and increasing potassium intake in hypertensive adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Subjects who participated in this study were 88 adults (28 males and 60 females) who were pre-hypertension or untreated hypertensive patients aged ≥ 30 yrs in Gyeonggi Province, Korea. These subjects were divided into 2 groups: a lowsodium education (LS) group and a low-sodium high-potassium education (LSHP) group. Nutrition education of 3 sessions for 12 weeks was conducted. Blood pressure, blood and urine components, nutrient intake, and dietary behavior were compared between the two education groups. RESULT: Blood pressure was decreased in both groups after the nutrition education (P < 0.05). In the LSHP group, levels of blood glucose (P < 0.05), total cholesterol (P < 0.01), and lowdensity lipoprotein-cholesterol (P < 0.05) were decreased after the program completion. Sodium intake was decreased in both groups after the nutrition education (P < 0.05). However, Na/K ratio was only decreased in the LS group (P < 0.05). Intake frequency of fish & shellfish was only significantly reduced in the LS group (P < 0.05), while intake frequencies of cooked rice, noodles & dumplings, breads & snacks, stew, kimchi, and fish & shellfish were reduced in the LSHP group (P < 0.05). Total score of dietary behavior appeared to be effectively decreased in both groups after the education program (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This education for reducing sodium intake was effective in reducing blood pressure and sodium intake. The education for enhancing potassium intake resulted in positive changes in blood glucose and serum cholesterol levels.

Improvement of RT-PCR Sensitivity for Fruit Tree Viruses by Small-scale dsRNA Extraction and Sodium Sulfite

  • Woody plant tissues contain great amounts of phenolic compounds and polysaccharides. These substances inhibit the activation of reverse transcriptase and/or Taq polymerase in RT-PCR. The commonly used multiple-step protocols using several additives to diminish polyphenolic compounds during nucleic acid extraction are time consuming and laborious. In this study, sodium sulfite was evaluated as an additive for nucleic acid extraction from woody plants and the efficiency of RT-PCR assay of commercial nucleic acid extraction kits and small-scale dsRNA extraction was compared. Sodium sulfite was used as an inhibitor against polyphenolic oxidases and its effects were compared in RNA extraction by commercial extraction kit and small-scale double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) extraction method for RT-PCR. During nucleic acid extraction, addition of 0.5%-1.5%(w/v) of sodium sulfite to lysis buffer or STE buffer resulted in lighter browning by oxidation than extracts without sodium sulfite and improved the RT-PCR detection. When commercial RNA extraction kit was used, optimal concentrations of sodium sulfite were variable according to the tested plant. However, with dsRNA as RT-PCR template, sodium sulfite 1.5% in STE buffer improved the detection efficiency of Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV) and Apple stem grooving virus (ASGV) in fruit trees, and reduced the unspecific amplifications signi-ficantly. Furthermore, when viruses existed at low titers in host plant, small-scale dsRNA extractions were very reliable.

인천지역 고등학생의 나트륨 섭취 관련 식행동 및 영양지식 평가 (A Study on Dietary Behaviors and Nutritional Knowledge Related Sodium Intake of High School Students in Incheon)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate dietary behavior and nutritional knowledge related to sodium intake in high school students. A questionnaire survey was conducted in 400 high school students (200 boys) in Incheon, Korea. Survey data were analyzed according to gender and degree of obesity. The distribution of the degree of obesity was the highest in 231 normal weight individuals (57.8%), followed by 89 underweight (22.3%), 41 overweight (10.3%), and 39 obese (9.8%). The sodium-related undesirable dietary behavior score was 2.9 points out of 5 points. The detailed dietary behavior scores of 'I eat kimchi when I eat instant noodles or noodles' and 'I like dried fish with salt' were significantly higher in boys than in girls (p<0.05). It was found that boys consumed more frequently high sodium foods, such as pizza, hamburger, and hotdog than girls. According to the degree of obesity, the underweight group consumed more kimchi fried rice and potato chips frequently than the other groups (p<0.05). Preference for salty taste was not significantly different among the groups by gender and degree of obesity. Sodium-related nutritional knowledge score was 5.3 points out of 10 and which was significantly higher in girls or normal weight group than in boys or obesity group. These results suggest that nutritional education on sodium intake is needed because the nutritional knowledge of adolescents is relatively low. Moreover, intensive nutritional guidance is required, especially in boys or adolescents with undesirable degree of obesity.

피레스로이드계 살충제 퍼메트린이 Heliothis virescens 중추신경세포에 있는 나트륨채널에 작용하는 기작을 전기생리학적으로 연구 (Modification of Insect Sodium Currents by a Pyrethroid Permethrin and Positive Cooperativity with Scorpion Toxins)

  • 본 연구는 피레스로이드계 살충제인 퍼메트린이 Heliothis virescens의 중추신경세포의 나트륨채널에 어떻게 작용하는 가를 전기생리학적으로 관찰하였다. 퍼메트린은 나트륨채널의 꼬리전류(INa-tail)를 지속적으로 증가시켰으며 이러한 비정상적인 나트륨 전류증가가 나방류의 신경계에 과도한 흥분을 일으겨 살충작용을 하는 것으로 생각된다. 이러한 살충작용은 전갈독과 함께 사용했을때 약 8배의 증가가 있었음을 확인하였다. 전갈독이 살충제의 독성을 강화하는 분자생리학적 기전연구가 계속되면 해충방제에 많은 기여를 할 것으로 생각된다.

새포아풀(Poa annua L.) 방제를 위한 Bispyribac-sodium과 타약제와의 혼합 상호작용 (Herbicidal Efficacy of Bispyribac-sodium Combined with Other Herbicides for Annual Bluegrass(Poa annua L.) Suppression)

  • Bispyribac-sodium은 벤트그린에 발생한 새포아풀의 출수 개화를 억제시켜 밀도를 저하시키는 새로운 개념의 제초제다. 이러한 생육중의 새포아풀에 대한 제초 및 생육억제 활성을 보이는 bispyribac-sodium을 기준으로 하여 잔디용으로 사용되고 있는 21종의 토양 및 경엽처리형 제초제와의 혼합 상호작용 효과를 알아보고자 실시하였다. 그 결과 bispyribac-sodium과 benfluralin, pendimethalin, oryzalin, siduron, chlorphtalim, isoxaben, bifenox, tenylchlor, indanofan, bentazone, imazosulfuron, imazaquin, halosulfuron-methyl 및 limsulfuron과의 혼합처리에서는 단제처리 대비 새포아풀에 대하여 현저한 약제의 제초 상승작용 확인되지 않았다. 그러나 mecoprop, triclopyr, metsulfuron-methyl, cyclosulfamuron, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl 및 pyributicarb과의 혼합처리에서는 단제처리와 비교하여 제초 상승작용을 보였으며, 벤트그래스에 대한 약해발생 정도도 미미하였고 후에 회복되었다. 향후 서로 다른 생육환경 조건과 관리가 수행되어지는 실제 벤트그린에서의 bispyribac-sodium과 타 약제간의 실증실험을 통한 상호작용의 검토도 필요하다.

전당뇨병 성인에서 나트륨 섭취와 복부비만과의 상관관계 (Association between Dietary Sodium Intake and Abdominal Obesity in Pre-diabetes Korean Adults)

  • 본 연구는 국민건강영양조사 2010년 자료를 이용하여 우리나라 만 30세 이상 성인을 대상으로 공복혈당에 따라 정상군, 전당뇨병군, 당뇨병군으로 나누어 각 군에서 나트륨 섭취량과 복부비만과의 상관성을 분석하고자 하였다. 분석 결과, 전당뇨병군에서 나트륨 섭취와 복부비만 관련 지표인 허리둘레가 유의적인 양의 상관관계를 보였으며, 특히 전당뇨병 고나트륨군의 경우 당뇨병 관련 임상지표인 공복혈당, 공복인슐린, HOMA-IR 수치가 높아질수록 복부비만 발병위험 또한 유의적으로 증가하였다. 본 연구는 당뇨병과 여러 관련 합병증으로 이행될 위험이 높은 전당뇨병 대상자에서 나트륨 섭취와 복부비만 간 상관성을 밝혔다는 점에 의의가 있다. 우리나라 전당뇨병 성인의 경우 나트륨 섭취 수준이 높다고 분석되었으므로 추후 연구에서는 전당뇨병 대상자를 위한 지속적인 나트륨 섭취량 모니터링과 함께 나트륨 섭취가 복부비만과 당뇨병에 미치는 인과관계와 그 기전을 밝힐 수 있는 연구가 필요하며, 이를 통해 당뇨병과 여러 관련 합병증의 예방 및 관리를 위한 적절한 식사지침과 효과적인 영양교육을 제시할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.
