  • This paper presents a study on the Full-HD HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding) encoder IP(Intellectual Property) design. The designed IP is for HEVC main profile 4.1, and performs encoding with a speed of 60 fps of full high definition. Before hardware and software design, overall reference model was developed with C language, and we proposed a parallel processing architecture for low-power consumption. And also we coded firmware and driver programs relating IP. The platform for verification of developed IP was developed, and we verified function and performance for various pictures under several encoding conditions by implementing designed IP to FPGA board. Compared to HM-13.0, about 35% decrease in bit-rate under same PSNR was achieved, and about 25% decrease in power consumption under low-power mode was performed.

  • Free-piston engine system is a new type energy converter which uses a linear motion of piston by using linear generator. In free-piston engine system, the piston is not connected to a crank-shaft. The major advantages of free-piston engine system are high efficiency and low mechanical loss from the absence of motion conversion devices. Linear generator of free-piston engine system is used as generator and starting motor. In design step, considering of back-emf and detent force characteristics for generating mode and thrust and control characteristics for starting mode is needed. In this research, generating mode of flat-type linear generator and tubular-type linear generator is analyzed by finite element analysis method and starting mode of both type linear generators is analyzed by using capability curve. Capability curve is plotted from electrical parameters of both type linear generator and motion profile is calculated from mechanical parameters.

  • In this study, a novel fractal ring antenna with a compact size of $24{\times}9{\times}0.8mm^3$ was configured using three iterations. Low profile, circular polarization, and measured operating bands (4.5-6.5 GHz) meet specifications of the upper band used in Wi-Fi and WiMAX applications. The antenna featured, stable radiation properties, especially gain and efficiency, in the notched band (92%). In deep, the antenna impedance, reflection coefficients, surface current distribution and circular polarization for the three iterations had been studied to improve the process of antenna design and its radiation characteristics.

  • The implementation and performance evaluation of an interleaved boundary conduction mode (BCM) boost power factor correction (PFC) converter is presented in this paper by employing three wide band-gap switching devices: a super junction silicon (Si) MOSFET, a silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET and a gallium nitride (GaN) high electron mobility transistor (HEMT). The practical considerations for adopting wide band-gap switching devices to BCM boost PFC converters are also addressed. These considerations include the gate drive circuit design and the PCB layout technique for the reliable and efficient operation of a GaN HEMT. In this paper it will be shown that the GaN HEMT exhibits the superior switching characteristics and pronounces its merits at high-frequency operations. The efficiency improvement with the GaN HEMT and its application potentials for high power density/low profile BCM boost PFC converters are demonstrated.

  • An implantable CPW fed monopole antenna embedded into human tissue is proposed for ISM band biomedical applications. The proposed antenna is made compatible for implantation by embedding it in an alumina ceramic substrate (${\Box}_r=9.8$ and thickness=0.65 mm). The proposed antenna covers the ISM band of 2.45 GHz. The radiation parameters, such as return loss, E-Plane, H-Plane, are measured and analyzed, using the method of moments. The proposed antenna has substantial merits over other implanted antennas, like low profile, miniaturization, lower return loss, and better impedance matching and high gain.

  • Perceiving a 3D moving target is important for automated machines including robots in a factory. Although stereovision or ultrasonic ranging is often employed for the purpose, the former requires high-cost systems, and the latter suffers from low-resolution. In this paper, we propose a PSD sensor array to acquire the 3D profile of an object conveyed by a belt. Rectangular parallelepiped target objects at random positions and orientations are assumed. Nine PSD sensors are configured in a $3{\times}3$ array above the belt, and fired in a sequence so that cross-talk can be avoided. Time gaps among sensor readings are compensated to get a result that is obtainable when sensors' measurements are made simultaneously along a sensing line. The system designed is tested with various objects in experiments.

  • In switched reluctance motor(SRM) drive, it is necessary to synchronize the stator phase excitation with the rotor position. Therefore, the rotor position information is essential. Usually, optical encoders or resolvers are used to provide the rotor position information. These sensors are expensive and are not suitable for high speed operation. This paper proposes a new encoder for high performance excitation control of SRM. The proposed encoder has complex structures of incremental and absolute encoder. An each phase inductance profile can be synchronized with 4-bit absolute position signal and incremental pulses are used for speed detection. Low cost and simple structure are possible.

  • Energy is a direct restriction to the working life of an underwater mooring platform (UMP). In this paper, a vertical axis water turbine (VAWT) is designed to supply energy for UMPs. The VAWT has several controlled blades, which can be opened or closed by inside plunger pumps. Two-dimensional transient numerical studies are presented to determine the operating performance and power output of the turbine under low ocean current velocity. A standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is used to perform the transient simulations. The influence of structural parameters, including foil section profile, foil chord length and rotor diameter, on the turbine performance are investigated over a range of tip-speed-ratios (TSRs). It was found that turbine with three unit length NACA0015 foils generated a maximum averaged coefficient of power, 0.1, at TSR = 2.

  • In a MEMS(micro-electro mechanical system), the fluid may slip near the surface of a solid and have a discontinuous temperature profile. A numerical prediction in this slip flow region can provide a reasonable guide for the design and fabrication of micro devices. The compressible Navier-Stokes equation with Maxwell/smoluchowski boundary condition is solved for two simple systems; couette flow and pressure driven flow in a long channel. We found that the couette flow could be regarded as an incompressible system in low speed regions. For the pressure driven flow system, we observed nonlinear distribution of pressure in the long channel and numerical results showed a good agreement with the experimental results.
