  • The Green growth has been demanded in all industrial sectors due to environmental destruction and exhaustion of natural resources. Buildings have consumed 1/3 of the total energy and 40% of natural resources and have accounted for 50% of $CO_2$ emissions and 30-50% of waste materials. In 1991, BREEAM(Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) of the British BRE(Building Research Establishment) had begun reduction of $CO_2$ emissions and energy saving movements, in which all the countries around the world have participated. The Republic of Korea has taken part in this trend by declaring a "National Vision in the Green Growth" in 2008 and implementing regulations on "Low Carbon, Green Growth" in 2010. G-SEED(Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design) based on GBCS(Green Building Certification System) has been actively promoted for its application. This study has limited its scope to G-SEED office buildings. It has conducted surveys of problems and assessment items of the G-SEED identified in the preceding study by the AHP(Analytic hierarchy process) method. The purpose of this study is to conduct a comparison analysis of problems and ranking of evaluation items recognized in the survey and to be presented as reference materials for G-SEED system improvements at its next amendments.

  • Environmental pollution and alternative energy has attracted increasing interest. The use of diesel engines is expected to increase in the world owing to their fuel economy. The problem of air pollution emissions from marine engines is causing a major concern in many areas. An alternative fuel was introduced as an environmentally friendly fuel to reduce the toxic emissions from conventional fossil fuels. Biodiesel fuel, which is a renewable energy is highlighted as environmentally friendly energy. This energy can be operated in regular diesel engines when it is blended with invariable ratios without making changes. In this study, a bio-diesel fuel was produced from waste cooking oil and applied to a marine diesel engine to examine the effects on the characteristics of combustion. Waste cooking oil contains a high cetane number and viscosity component, a low carbon and oxygen content. As a result, the brake specific fuel consumption was increased, and the cylinder pressure, rate pressure rise and rate of heat release were decreased.

  • This paper estimate the $CO_2$ reduction potential that can be achieved by improving the technical efficiency of input factors in the manufacturing sector. Technical efficiency in each manufacturing firm was estimated using the DEA technique. Depending on the returns-to-scale assumption selected, average technical efficiency was estimated to be between 0.467 and 0.643. These estimates suggest that, when the efficiency of electricity consumption in the manufacturing sector is improved, the overall $CO_2$ emissions can be reduced by 17.1-25.5%. Recently, the Korean government has adopted a low-carbon-green-growth policy with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% below the BAU level by year 2020. The analysis of the paper suggests that this goal can be achieved through improved efficiency of electricity consumption.

  • Nitrogen applied to soil is highly prone to leaching and volatilization leading to gaseous emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) and ammonia (NH3) which are of great environmental concern. Usage of biochar to reduce the discharge of nitrogen to the environment has attracted much interest in the recent past. Biochar is produced by pyrolyzing various biomasses under oxygen-limited conditions. Biochar is a carbonized material with high adsorptive powers for not only plant nutrients but also heavy metals. The objective of this study was to investigate the adsorption characteristics of NH4-N onto biochar made from pine needles. The biochar was produced at various pyrolysis temperatures including 300, 400 and 500℃ and holding times of 30 and 120 minutes. The Langmuir isotherm was used to evaluate the adsorption test results. The chemical properties of the biochar varied with the pyrolysis conditions. In particular, the pH, EC and total carbon content increased with the increasing pyrolysis conditions. The rate of adsorption of NH4-N by the biochar decreased with the increasing pyrolysis conditions. Of these conditions, biochar that was pyrolyzed at 300℃ for 30 minutes showed the highest adsorption rate of approximately 0.071 mg·g-1. Thus, the use of biochar pyrolyzed at low temperatures with a short holding time can most efficiently reduce ammonia emissions from agricultural land.

  • Carbon dioxide, emitted by human activities since the industrial revolution, is regarded as a major contributor of global warming. There are many efforts to mitigate climate change, and carbon dioxide capture and geological storage (CCS) is recognized as one of key technologies because it can reduce carbon dioxide emissions from large point sources such as a power station or other industrial installation. The inclusion of CCS as clean development mechanism (CDM) project activities has been considered at UNFCCC as financial incentive mechanisms for those developing countries that may wish to deploy the CCS. Although the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the UNFCCC's Kyoto Protocol (CMP), at Cancun in December 2010, decided that CCS is eligible as CDM project activities, the issues identified in decision 2/CMP.5 should be addressed and resolved in a satisfactory manner. Major issues regarding modalities and procedure are 1) Site selection, 2) Monitoring, 3) Modeling, 4) Boundaries, 5) Seepage Measuring and Accounting, 6) Trans-Boundary Effects, 7) Accounting of Associated Project Emissions (Leakage), 8) Risk and Safety Assessment, and 9) Liability Under the CDM Scheme. The CMP, by its decision 7/CMP.6, invited Parties to submit their views to the secretariat of Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), SBSTA prepared a draft modalities and procedure by exchanging views of Parties through workshop held in Abu Dhabi, UAE (September 2011). The 7th CMP (Durban, December 2011) finally adopted the modalities and procedures for CCS as CDM project activities (CMP[2011], Decision-/CMP.7). The inclusion of CCS as CDM project activities means that CCS is officially accredited as one of $CO_2$ reducing technologies in global carbon market. Consequently, it will affect relevant technologies and industry as well as law and policy in Korea and aboard countries. This paper presents a progress made on discussion and challenges regarding the issue, and aims to suggest some considerations to policy makers in Korea in order to demonstrate and deploy the CCS project in the near future. According to the adopted modalities and procedures for CCS as CDM project activities, it is possible to implement relevant CCS projects in Non-Annex I countries, including Korea, as long as legal and regulatory frameworks are established. Though Korea enacted 'Framework Act on Low Carbon, Green Growth', the details are too inadequate to content the requirements of modalities and procedures for CCS as CDM project. Therefore, it is required not only to amend the existing laws related with capture, transport, and storage of $CO_2$ for paving the way of an prompt deployment of CCS CDM activities in Korea as a short-term approach, but also to establish the united framework as a long-term approach.

  • This study examined the long-term durability of PC boxes, which was manufactured by low-carbon eco-friendly concrete using an alternative binder to cement and alternative fine aggregate to sand and microwave heat curing system to reduce the construction cost of a near-surface transit system. Based on the test results, the initial compressive strength of microwave heat cured concrete was higher than that of the steam cured concrete, but those were similar in the long-term age. In addition, there was no significant difference between the two curing conditions in the chemical resistance and the freeze-thawing resistance, and the chloride ion penetration level of the concrete cured by two methods was very low. Therefore, low-carbon eco-friendly concrete and microwave heat curing technology are expected to contribute to the economic construction of a near-surface transit system, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions and environmental impact.

  • South Korea established the 2050 Carbon Neutral Plan in response to the climate crisis, and to achieve this policy, it is very important to monitor domestic carbon emissions and atmospheric carbon concentration. Both CO2 and CO are emitted from fossil fuel combustion processes, but the relative ratios depend on the combustion efficiency and the strength of local emission regulations. In this study, the relationship between CO2 and CO was analyzed using ground observation data for the period of 2018~2020 at Anmyeon-do site and the CO/CO2 ratio according to regional origin during high CO2 cases was investigated based on the footprint simulated from Stochastic Time-Inverted Lagrangian Transport (STILT) model. CO2 and CO showed a positive correlation with correlation coefficient of 0.66 (p < 0.01), and averaged footprints during high CO2 cases confirmed that air particles mainly originated from eastern and north-eastern China, and inland of Korean Peninsula. In addition, it was revealed that among the cases of high CO2 concentration, when the CO/CO2 ratio is high, the industrial area of eastern China is greatly affected, and when the ratio is low, the contribution of the domestic region is relatively high. The ratio of CO2 and CO in this study is significant in that it can be used as a useful factor in determining the possibility of domestic and foreign origins of climate pollutants.

  • In order to reduce the effects of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the South Korean government has announced a special platform of technologies as part of an effort to minimize global climate change. To further this effort, the Korean government has pledged to increase low-carbon and carbon neutral resources for biofuel derived from biomass to replace fossil and to decrease levels of carbon dioxide. In general, second generation biofuel produced form woody biomass is expected to be an effective avenue for reducing fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in road transport. It is important that under the new Korean initiative, pilot scale studies evolve practices to produce biomass-to-liquid (BTL) fuel. This study reports the quality characteristics of F-T(Fischer-Tropsch) diesel for production of BTL fuel. Synthetic F-Tdiesel fuel can be used in automotive diesel engines, pure or blended with automotive diesel, due to its similar physical properties to diesel. F-T diesel fuel was synthesized by Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) process with syngas($H_2$/CO), Fe basedcatalyst in low temperature condition($240^{\circ}C$). Synthetic F-T diesel with diesel compositions after distillation process is consisted of $C_{12}{\sim}C_{23+}$ mixture as a kerosine, diesel compositions of n-paraffin and iso-paraffin compounds. Synthetic F-T diesel investigated a very high cetane number, low aromatic composition and sulfur free level compared to automotive diesel. Synthetic F-T diesel also show The wear scar of synthetic F-T diesel show poor lubricity due to low content of sulfur and aromatic compounds compared to automotive diesel.

  • This paper focuses on the engineering properties of Bentonite-Cement-Sodium silicate (BCS) grout, which was prepared by partially replacing the ordinary Portland cement in Cement-Sodium silicate grout with lithium bentonite (Li-bent) and sodium bentonite (Na-bent), respectively. The effect of different Water-to-Solid ratio (W/S) and various replacement percentages of bentonite on the apparent viscosity, bleeding, setting time, and early compressive strength of BCS grout were investigated. The XRD method was used to detect its hydration products. The results showed that both bentonites played a positive role in the stability of BCS grout, increased its apparent viscosity. Na-bent prolonged the setting time of BCS, while 5% of Li-bent shortened the setting time of BCS. The XRD analysis indicated that the hydration products between the mixture containing Na-bent and Li-bent did not differ much. Using bentonite as supplementary cementitious material (SCM) to replace partial cement is a promising way to cut down on carbon dioxide emissions and to produce low-cost, eco-friendly, non-toxic, and water-resistant grout. In addition, Li-bent was superior to Na-bent in improving the strength and the thickening of BCS grouts.
