In this study, a PbS quantum dots (QDs)-based H2 gas sensor with a Pd electrode was proposed. QDs have a size of several nanometers, and they can exhibit a high surface area when forming a thin film. In particular, the NH2 present in the ligand of PbS QDs and H2 gas are combined to form NH3+, subsequently the electrical characteristics of the QDs change. In addition to the resistance change owing to the reaction between Pd and H2 gas, the resistance change owing to the reaction between the NH2 of PbS QDs and H2 gas increases the current signal at the sensor output, which can produce a high output signal for the same concentration of H2 gas. Using the XRD and absorbance properties, the synthesis and particle size of the synthesized PbS QDs were analyzed. Using PbS QDs, the sensitivity was significantly improved by 44%. In addition, the proposed H2 gas sensor has high selectivity because it has low reactivity with heterogeneous gases such as C2H2, CO2, and CH4.

Here, we investigated fungal microbiota in the understory root layer of representative well-conserved geographically segregated natural wetlands in the Korean Peninsula. We obtained 574,143 quality fungal sequences in total from soil samples in three wetlands, which were classified into 563 operational taxonomic units (OTU), 5 phyla, 84 genera. Soil texture, total nitrogen, organic carbon, pH, and electrical conductivity of soil were variable between geographical sites. We found significant differences in fungal phyla distribution and ratio, as well as genera variation and richness between the wetlands. Diversity was greater in the Jangdo islands wetland than in the other sites (Chao richness/Shannon/Simpson's for wetland of the Jangdo islands: 283/6.45/0.97 > wetland of the Mt. Gariwang primeval forest: 169/1.17/0.22 > wetland of the Hanbando geology: 145/4.85/0.91), and this variance corresponded to the confirmed number of fungal genera or OTUs (wetlands of Jangdo islands: 42/283> of Mt. Gariwang primeval forest: 32/169> of the Hanbando geology: 25/145). To assess the uniqueness of the understory root layer fungus taxa, we analyzed fungal genera distribution. We found that the percentage of fungal genera common to two or three wetland sites was relatively low at 32.3%, while fungal genera unique to each wetland site was 67.7% of the total number of identified fungal species. The Jangdo island wetland had higher fungal diversity than did the other sites and showed the highest level of uniqueness among fungal genera (Is. Jangdo wetland: 34.5% > wetland of Mt. Gariwang primeval forest: 28.6% > wetland of the Hanbando geology: 16.7%).

Graphene has attracted tremendous attention for the last a few years due to it fascinating electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties. Up to now, several methods have been developed exclusively to prepare graphene, which include micromechanical cleavage, polycrystalline Ni employing chemical vapor deposition technique, solvent thermal reaction, thermal desorption of Si from SiC substrates, chemical routes via graphite intercalation compounds or graphite oxide. In particular, polycrystalline Ni foil and conventional chemical vapor deposition system have been widely used for synthesis of large-area graphene. [1-3] In this study, synthesis of mono-layer graphene on a Ni foil, the mixing ratio of hydrocarbon ($CH_4$) gas to hydrogen gas, microwave power, and growth time were systemically optimized. It is possible to synthesize a graphene at relatively lower temperature ($500^{\circ}C$) than those (${\sim}1000^{\circ}C$) of previous results. Also, we could control the number of graphene according to the growth conditions. The structural features such as surface morphology, crystallinity and number of layer were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and resonant Raman spectroscopy with 514 nm excitation wavelength. We believe that our approach for the synthesis of mono-layer graphene may be potentially useful for the development of many electronic devices.

Recently, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), which is III-V compound of boron and nitride by strong covalent sp2 bonds has gained great interests as a 2 dimensional insulating material since it has honeycomb structure with like graphene with very small lattice mismatch (1.7%). Unlike graphene that is semi-metallic, h-BN has large band gap up to 6 eV while providing outstanding properties such as high thermal conductivity, mechanical strength, and good chemical stability. Because of these excellent properties, hBN can potentially be used for variety of applications such as dielectric layer, deep UV optoelectronic device, and protective transparent substrate. Low pressure and atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD and APCVD) methods have been investigated to synthesize h-BN by using ammonia borane as a precursor. Ammonia borane decomposes to polyiminoborane (BHNH), hydrogen, and borazine. The produced borazine gas is a key material that is a used for the synthesis of h-BN, therefore controlling the condition of decomposed products from ammonia borane is very important. In this paper, we optimize the decomposition of ammonia borane by investigating temperature, amount of precursor, and other parameters to fabricate high quality monolayer h-BN. Synthesized h-BN is characterized by Raman spectroscopy and its absorbance is measured with UV spectrophotometer. Topological variations of the samples are analyzed by atomic force microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy and Scanning transmission Electron microscopy are used for imaging and analysis of structures and surface morphologies.

Autonomous ultradian metabolic oscillation (T$\simeq$50 min) was detected in an aerobic chemostat culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A pulse injection of GSH (a reduced form of glutathione) into the culture induced a perturbation in metabolic oscillation, with respiratory inhibition caused by $H_2S$ burst pro-duction. As the production of $H_2S$ in the culture was controlled by different amino acids, we attempted to characterize the effects of GSH on amino acid metabolism, particularly with regard to branched chain and sulfur-containing amino acids. During stable metabolic oscillation, concentrations of intra-cellular glutamate, aspartate, threonine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, and cysteine were observed to oscil-late with the same periods of dissolved $O_2$ oscillation, although the oscillation amplitudes and maximal phases were shown to differ. The methionine concentration was stably maintained at 0.05 mM. When GSH (100 $\mu$M) was injected into the culture, cellular levels of branched chain amino acids increased dramatically with continuous $H_2S$production, whereas the cysteine and methionine concentrations were noticeably reduced. These results indicate that GSH-dependent perturbation occurs as the result of the promotion of branched chain amino acid synthesis and an attenuation of cysteine and methionine synthesis, both of which activate the generation of $H_2S$. In a low sulfate medium containing 2.5 mM sulfate, the GSH injections did not result in perturbations of dissolved $O_2$ NAD(P)H redox oscillations without burst $H_2S$ production. This suggests that GSH-dependent perturbation is intimately linked with the metabolism of branched-chain amino acids and $H_2S$ generation, rather than with direct GSH-GSSG redox control.

Post weld heat treatment (PWHT) of weldment of the low alloy Cr-Mo steel, in general, is carried out not only to remove residual stress and hydrogen existing in weldment but to improve fracture toughness of weld heat affected zone (HAZ). There occur some problems such as toughness decrement and stress relief cracking (SRC) in the coarse grained region of weld HAZ when PWHT is practiced. Especially, embrittlement of structure directly relates to the mode of fracture and is appeared as the difference of fracture surface such as grain boundary failure. Therefore, in this paper, the effect of heating rate on PWHT embrittlement under the various kinds of stresses simulated residual stress in weld HAZ was evaluated by COD fracture toughness test and observation of fracture surface. Fracture toughness of weld HAZ decreased with increment of heating rate under no stress, but it was improved to increment of heating rate under the stress. Grain boundary failure didn't almost appear at the heating rate of 600.deg.C/hr but it appeared from being the applied stress of 294 MPa at 220.deg.C/hr and 196 MPa at 60.deg.C/hr.

Conventional electric motors are not suitable for aircraft because of their large size and weight. High-temperature superconducting (HTS) motors have high current density, high magnetic field density, and low loss, so they can significantly reduce the size and weight compared to general electric motors. This paper presents the conceptual design and analysis results of HTS motors for electric propulsion in future aircraft. A 2.5 MW HTS motor with a rotational speed of 7,200 RPM was designed and the specific power (kW/kg) was analyzed. The operating temperature of the field coil of the HTS motor is 20K in consideration of LH2 cooling. The stator winding were connected in a multi-phase configuration and Litz wires were used to minimize eddy current losses. As a result, it was confirmed that the specific power of the motor is about 18.67 kW/kg, which is much higher than that of the conventional electric motor.

This study was conducted to analyze and characterize the properties of polyethylene wax polymerized and polymerized using various metallocene catalysts based on Indene and Cyclopentadien, which are different from Ziegler-Natta catalysts used in polyethylene polymerizatio n. The polymerization of polyethylene wax was carried out under various conditions by adjusting the polymerization temperature and the ratio of hydrogen gas used as a chain transfer agent and ethylene gas to metallocene catalysts containing ligands of different structures. The molecular weight and molecular weight distribution, The catalyst yields were compared and analyzed. As a result, the structure of a metallocene catalyst suitable for having a low molecular weight and a narrow molecular weight distribution was proposed and the ideal polyethylene wax could be polymerized.

The conformations of hexapeptides, their complexation with alkali cations and the inhibition of the cation transport by 5,5-diphenylhydantoin(DPH) were studied theoretically using ECEPP/2 and MM2 force field. Several low energy conformations of uncomplexed cyclic hexapepides are obtained, and they adopt compact conformations in which most amide hydrogens form intramolecular hydrogen bond to amide carbonyl oxygens. The complexation energy of the peptide with $Na^+$ ion and DPH is -60 kcaal/mol and -18 kcal/mol, respectively. However, no suitable cavity to bind metal cation exists for the local minima of the peptide, and the internal energy of the uncomplexed hexapeptide having cavity is higher than that of the uncomplexed global minimum of this work by 10 kcal/mol. Also, one of the most important amino acid residue to bind DPH is Glycine, and this can explain experimental observation that the replacement of Gly by Sarcosine (N-methyl Glycine) reduce the inhibition ability of the cation transport.

Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) has been issued recently in contaminated water environments because of potential impacts on ecosystem and public health. This study was aimed at investigating the possibility of ASA degradation using gamma ray irradiation. In addition, the use of sodium persulfate, hydrogen peroxide, ferrous sulfate were tested in order to examine a synergistic effect with gamma ray. The absorbed dose was ranged from 0.2 to 10 kGy and the concentration of oxidants were from 0.1 to 10 mM in this study. The concentration of ASA was gradually decreased corresponding to the increase of the absorbed dose. When soudium persulfate was simultaneously applied, most of the parent compound was completely degraded even at a low dose of 0.8 kGy. The removal efficiency of total organic carbon was 90% even at the highest dose of 10 kGy without sodium persulfate. However, the efficiency was dramatically enhanced up to 98% at the same dose by adding 10 mM of oxidants. It was suggested that hydroxyl radical ($OH{\cdot}$) and sulfate radical ($SO{_4}^-{\cdot}$) were formed in the system and made roles in degrading ASA at the same time.
