  • Epoxy/mica composite was synthesized, in order to use it as an impregnation resin in a vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) process, for manufacturing a high voltage rotary machine. The average particle size of the mica was 5~7 ${\mu}m$ and its content was 0, 20, 30 and 40 wt%. A plasticizer or a low molecular aliphatic epoxy was also used, to decrease the viscosity of the composite. The AC electrical breakdown strength was estimated in sphere-to-sphere electrodes, and the electrical breakdown data were estimated by Weibull statistical analysis. The electrical breakdown strength became higher with the addition of mica; and that of the system with 20 wt% mica was highest. The electrical breakdown strength of the system with an aliphatic epoxy was higher than that of the system with a, plasticizer.

  • The sheet molding compound composite has been applied divers section. This paper reports processing of carbon fiber reinforced thermosetting composite with diverse resins and which was composed of chopped carbon fiber (30 ~ 60 wt%). Normally the paste that the viscosity is over 15,000 cps has been used in traditional Sheet molding compound (SMC) machine. In this research, SMC machine was designed to make Carbon-sheet molding compound (C-SMC) prepreg which was composed with low viscosity resin (1,800 ~ 2,500 cps increase up to 10,000 cps after aging). In order to confirm the optimal processing condition. Mechanical strength tests including tensile test, shear test, impact test, flexural strength test were conducted on C-SMC composites. Plus we identified the correlation between the mechanical properties and prepreg processing condition (carbon ratio and applied resin).

  • The fiber reinforced thermoplastics(FRTP) were prepared with polypropylene fiber(PP) as matrix and polyvinyl alchol(VF), aramid(KF) or polyamide fiber(PAF) as the reinforcing materials using the integrated fiber mixing apparatus. The reinforced thermoplastic sheets were prepared by com¬pression molding and their morphology, rheological and mechanical properties were characterized. In the morphological properties of composites, the wettability of the reinforced thermoplastics were decreased in proportion to the content of fibers. At low angular frequency, the viscosity of PAF /PP and VF/PP composite was increased with the content of reinforced fiber. However at high frequency the viscosity of composite reinforced with 5~20wt% fiber, was shown the reduced values which approaches that of the neat matrix. The mechanical properties of the composite were changed with the content of reinforecd fiber, and VF/PP and KF/PP composite had better properties than PAF/PP system.

  • Flame-retardant vinyl ester (VE) resin films were developed from the mixtures of brominated and non-brominated epoxy resins via esterification with methacrylic acid without reactive diluents. The films were used to fabricate carbon fiber (CF) prepregs via a hot melt impregnation process. The viscosity of VE resins suitable for film production was optimized by mixing low-viscosity bisphenol-A and high-viscosity brominated bisphenol-A epoxy precursors. Increasing the bromine content of the cured VE resin further increased the limited oxygen index (LOI) (39%), storage modulus (2.4 GPa) at 25℃ and residual carbonization (16.1%) values compared to non-brominated VE. Manual layup of as-prepared VE prepregs with subsequent curing led to the successful fabrication of CF-reinforced composites with high tensile and flexural strength. The results from the study hold high promise for a styrene-free, environmentally friendly VE composite process in the future.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a new resin monomer on the microleakage of composite resin restorations. By adding new methoxylated Bis-GMA (Bis-M-GMA, 2,2-bis[4-(2-methoxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl] propane) having low viscosity, the content of TEGDMA which has adverse effects on polymerization shrinkage might be decreased. As a result, microleakage might be improved. $2\;mm\;{\times}\;2\;mm\;{\times}\;2\;mm$ cavities with occlusal margins in enamel and gingival margins in dentin were prepared on buccal and lingual surfaces of 40 extracted human premolars. Prepared teeth were randomly divided into four groups and restored with Clearfil SE bond (Kuraray, Japan) and one of experimental composite resins; EX1, Experimental composite resin1 (Bis-M-GMA/TEGDMA = 95/5 wt%, 40 mm nanofillers); EX2, Experimental composite resin2 (Bis-M-GMA/TEGDMA = 95/5 wt%, 20 mm nanofillers); EX3, Experimental composite resin3 (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA = 70/30 wt%, 40 nm nanofillers); and Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE, USA) was filed as a control group. The restored teeth were thermocycled, and immersed in 2% methylene blue solution for 24 hours. The teeth were sectioned buccolingually with a low speed diamond saw and evaluated for microleakage under stereomicroscope. The data were statistically analyzed by Pearson Chi-Square test and Fisher Exact test (p = 0.05). The microleakage scores seen at the enamel margin were significantly lower than those of dentin margin (p = 0.007). There were no significant differences among the composite resins in the microleakage scores within each margin (p > 0.05). Bis-M-GMA, a new resin monomer having low viscosity, might in part replace high viscous Bis-CMA and might improve the quality of composite resin.

  • In this study, forming of carbon composite parts was performed using an injection/compression molding process. An impregnation of matrix is determined by ability of wet and flow rate between the matrix and reinforcement. The flow rate of matrix passing through the reinforcements is a function of permeability of reinforcement, a viscosity of matrix and pressure gradient on molding, and the viscosity of the matrix depends on the mold temperature, molding pressure and shear strain of matrix. Therefore, compression molding experiment was conducted using a heating mold in order to confirm the possibility of matrix impregnation. The impregnation of the matrix through the porosities between the woven yarns was confirmed by the cross-sectional SEM image of compression molded parts. An injection molding process was also performed at a short cycle time, high molding pressure and low mold temperature than those of compression experiment conditions. Deterioration of impregnation on the surface of molded parts were caused by these injection conditions and it could be the reason of decreasing the maximum tensile strength. In order to improve impregnation of matrix on the surface, injection/compression molding and insert-over molding were applied. As a result of applying injection/compression molding and insert-over molding, it was shown that the improvement of impregnation on the surface and the maximum tensile strength was increased about 2.8 times than the virgin matrix.

  • In this study, a smart material applicable to speed bumps was developed using low-cost starch and waterbased suspensions, and their properties were investigated. Viscosity and shear stress according to the shear rate was measured by a rheometer to observe shear thickening behavior according to starch concentration. The shear thickening phenomenon and applicability to speed bumps were identified macroscopically via drop weight test and bike driving test, measuring the vibration after impact with a driving speed of 5-25 km/h. As a result of the viscosity measurement, shear thickening occurred after the shear thinning region at the beginning, and the critical strain causing the shear thickening phenomenon decreased as the concentration of starch increased. Also, the viscosity and shear stress increased significantly with the increase of the starch concentration. As a result of the drop weight test and the bike driving test, the suspension was changed to a solid-like state in a short time, and the impact energy was absorbed in the fluid. The shear thickening phenomenon easily occurred as the concentration of the fluid and the applied impact (velocity) increased. Therefore, it can be proposed the development of a smart speed bump material that operates in the range of 5-25 km/h with a Non-Newtonian fluid based on water and starch.

  • Dicyclopentadiene is a low viscosity resin which forms a poly-dicyclopentadiene rapidly through ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). This poly-dicyclopentadiene has outstanding properties of low-temperature, water and impact resistances. Due to these advantages, military and offshore structures try to apply the DCPD composites by using liquid composite molding process. In this study, 14%, 38% volume fraction fiber glass strand mat reinforced p-DCPD composites processed by structural reaction injection molding (S-RIM) which has resin-catalsyt mixing head and glass fiber preform in the mold. Additionally, S-RIM numerical analysis was conducted to predict the process time depending on fiber volume fraction and mold temperature. The process time is shorter when it has the lower fiber volume fraction or the higher mold temperature. At higher mold temperature, it is necessary to set the maximum mold temperature considering the resin curing time.

  • This Study was conducted to investigate the processing quality of high-amylose content rice(goami) flour for noodle. The potassium and magnesium contents of rice flour were negatively associated with gross score of noodle making mixed with wheat flour. The high-amylose content of rice flour was closed associated with gel consistency negatively and with hardness of rice noodle positively, Setback viscosity of rice flour measured in a rapid visco-analyser(RVA) was significantly affected by amylose content as well as gel consistency. Also the amylose content decreased, the amylogram pasting temperature and the breakdown ratio increased. The low-amylose content rice(Chucheong) flour showed higher values in solubility. Cooking quality and texture were measured, and sensory evaluation was performed with the noodles prepared. Texture measurement showed that the noodles of composite flour containing 40% goami rice flour were superior to those wheat flour alone. Water binding capacity of the composite flour containing 40% goami rice flour was lower than that of 40% chucheong rice flour. In sensory evaluation, chewiness, overall acceptability of noodle with 40% goami ricer was evaluated as the best.

  • All solid rocket propellants are divided in two basic classes according to chemical state: homogeneous(double base) and heterogeneous (composite). Today, composite propellants are extensively used as power sources covering the range from gas generators and small rocket systems to large launch vehicles in space programs. The development of composite rocket propellants in the past was mainly directed to thermoset polymers. But, the thermoset composite propellants have the complication in formulation and fabricating process to adapt to rocket system requirements. In contrast to the thermoset propellant, the PVC plastisols composite propellants have the advantages in the view of loss in manufacturing process, low cost of raw material, and stability of the handling process even though moderate ballistic and mechanical properties. It is predicted that the application field of this class will be used more widely than any other classes.
