External low-velocity impact loadings onto the composites cause reduction of stiffness and/or strength. The reductions indicate that internal(external) damages were developed within the composites. These damages could be matrix cracking, fiber/matrix debonding, or delamination between layers. In previous studies, damage evaluation have been done by applying secondary mechanical loading such as buckle-driven compressive, or fatigue, or flexural loadings. An evaluation method by applying indentation loadings on the composites was proposed. The load-displacement curves obtained from the indentation testing provided the extent of damages within the composites due to impact loadings.

In this study, the material characterization and the dynamic behavior of 3D orthogonal woven composite materials has been studied under transverse central low-velocity impact condition by means of the micromechanical model using finite elements. To build up the micromechanical model considering tow spacing and waviness, an accurate unit structure is stacked in x-y-z direction repeatedly. First, the mechanical properties of 3D orthogonal woven composites are obtained by means of virtual experiment using full scale Finite Element Analysis based on the DNS concepts, and the computed elastic properties are validated by comparison to available experimental results[9]. Second, using the implementation of this validated micromechanical model, 3D transient finite-element analysis is performed considering contact and impact, and the impact behavior of 3D orthogonal woven composite is investigated. A comparison study will be carried out in terms of energy absorption capabilities.

Second, using the implementation of this validated micromechanical model, 3D transient finite-clement analysis is performed considering contact and impact, and the impact behavior of 3D orthogonal woven composite is investigated. A comparison study with the homogenized model will be carried out in terms of global and local behaviors.
This study is an impact assessment of building blocks on urban inundation depth and area. LiDAR data is used to generate two original data set in terms of DEM with $5{\times}5$ meter and building block elevation layer of the study drainage area in Cheongju and then the building block elevation layer is modified again to the mesh data with same size to DEM. Two-dimensional inundation analysis is carried out by applying 2D SWMM model. The inundation depth calculated by using the building block elevation layer shows higher reliability than the DEM. This is resulted from the building block interference to surface flow. In addition, the maximum flooded area by DEM is two times wider than the area by building block layer. In the case of the surface velocity, the difference of velocity is negligible in either DEM or building block case in the low building impact zone. However, If the impact of building on the surface velocity was increase, the gap of velocity was significant.

In this study, low velocity impact analysis on Turbo Fan Engine composite sandwich structure was performed. Sandwich structure configuration is made of carbon/epoxy face sheets and foam cores. For validating study, the results of an experimental and of a Finite Element Method analysis were compared previously. From the Finite Element Method analysis results of sandwich panel, it was confirmed that the result of analysis was reasonable. Impactor velocity to initiate damage was estimated, and in order to investigate the damage at the predicted velocity, impact analysis using Finite Element Method was performed. According to the impact analysis results of sandwich panel, it was confirmed that the damage was generated at the estimated impact velocity.

A quantitative study of impact damage of ${Al_2}}O_3}-TiO_2$ plasma coated soda-lime glasses was carried out and compared with that of the uncoated smooth glass specimen. The shape of cracks by the impact of steel ball was observed by stereo-microscope and the decrease of the bending strength due to the impact of steel ball was measured through the 4-point bending test. At the low velocity, cone cracks were occurred. As the impact velocity increases, initial lateral cracks were propagated on the slanting surface of a cone crack, and radial cracks were generated at the crushed site. When the impact velocity of steel ball exceeds the critical velocity, the contact site of specimen was crushed due to plastic deformation and then radial and lateral cracks were largely grown. Crack length of coated specimens was smaller than that of uncoated smooth specimen due to the effect of coating layer on the substrate surface. According to impact velocity, the bending strength of coated specimens had no significant difference, compared with that of the uncoated smooth specimen. But this represents that the bending strength of coated specimens was increased, considering the effect of sand blasting damage which was performed to increase the adhesion force of coating layer.
This paper presents numerical and theoretical investigations on the strain rate in steel-concrete composite (SC) panels under low-velocity impact of a hemispherical rigid body. Finite element analyses were performed on five specimens with different loading rates. The impact energy was kept constant to eliminate its influence by simultaneously altering the velocity and mass of the projectile. Results show that the strain rate in most parts of the specimens was low and its influence on bearing capacity and energy dissipation was limited in an average sense of space and time. Therefore, the strain rate effect can be ignored for the analyses of global deformation. However, the strain rate effect should be considered in local contact problems. Equations of the local strain and strain rate were theoretically derived.

In this study, the static and low velocity impact tests for two-way concrete specimens strengthening with the CFRP sheets were carried out. The specimens that had a dimension of $50{\times}350{\times}350mm$ with 40 MPa plain concrete and steel fiber reinforced concrete which had same mixture to plain concrete and 0.75% steel fibers were fabricated. The specimens reinforced with the CFRP or steel fibers showed mixed failure modes, splitting and punching, also splitting cracks and fragments were much reduced than plain concrete specimens'. Two-way concrete members reinforced with the CFRP and steel fiber simultaneously dissipated 6.8 times larger energy than not-retrofitted members' under the low-velocity impact loading.
This paper focuses on the energy absorption of lattice core sandwich structures of different configurations. The diamond lattice unit cell, which has been extensively investigated for energy absorption applications, is the starting point for this research. The energy absorption behaviour of sandwich structures with an expanded metal sheet as the core is investigated at low-velocity impact loading. Numerical simulations were carried out using ABAQUS/EXPLICIT and the results were thoroughly compared with the experimental results, which indicated desirable accuracy. A parametric analysis, using a Box-Behnken design (BBD), as a method for the design of experiments (DOE), was performed. The samples fabricated in three levels of parameters include 0.081, 0.145, and 0.562 mm2 Cell sizes, and 0, 45, and 90-degree cell orientation, which were investigated. It was observed from experimental data that the angle of cells orientation had the highest degree of influence on the specific energy absorption. The results showed that the angle of cells orientation has been the most influential parameter to increase the peak forces. The results from using the design expert software showed the optimal specific energy absorption and peak force to be 1786 J/kg and 26314.4 N, respectively. The obtained R2 values and normal probability plots indicated a good agreement between the experimental results and those predicted by the model.
