Polychlorodibenzofurans and polychlorodibenzo-pdioxins are among the most toxic xenobiotics released into the biosphere and the cause of significant public concern because of their apparent ubiquityalbeit at low levels- in food and environment. Several bacteria able to degrade nonchlorinated dioxin and dibenzofuran and in some cases to attack chlorinated analogues have recently been isolated. This opens up the possibility that bioremediation processes may ultimately be developed to eliminate these toxic compounds from contaminated sites. In this review we summarize current knowledge on the genetics and biochemistry of dioxin and dibenzofruan degradation by Sphingomonas sp. RW1, a gram-negative bacterium, and highlight the unusual nature of the genetic organization of these pathways.
Mercury is a toxic, persistent pollutant that bioaccumulates and biomagnifies through food webs. People are exposed to methyhnercruy mainly through their diet, especially through the consumption of freshwater and marine fish and of other animals that consume fish (e.g., marine mammals). All humans are exposed to low levels of mercury. Dietary patterns can increase exposure to a fish-eating population where the fish and seafood are contaminated with mercury. The primary toxicity targets of mercury and mercury compounds are the nervous system, kidneys, and cardiovascular system. It is generally accepted that developing organ systems are most sensitive to the toxic effects of mercury. The fetal-brain mercury levels appear to be significantly higher than the maternal-blood mercury levels, and the developing central nervous system of the fetus is currently regarded as the main system of concern as it demonstrates the greatest sensitivity. The subpopulation that may be at greater risk for mercury toxicity are those exposed to higher levels of methylmercury due to carnivorous fish, including sharks.
The marine toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella has been implicated in numerous paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) events in many countries. Due to difficulties in rapidly identifying A. catenella, field-based study of this species has been problematic. The present study developed a TaqMan format A. catenella-specific probe for real-time PCR assay (specific to Korean genotype) based on LSU rDNA sequence information for studying geographic and temporal distribution of the species in surface sediments and water columns of Jinhae Bay, Korea. The field survey from 2007 to 2008 revealed that A. catenella occurred in most seasons at low densities, mostly below 1 cell $mL^{-1}$, and was more abundant in spring (maximum cell density of 2 cells $mL^{-1}$) when shellfish exceed the quarantine toxin level for PSP toxins in Jinhae Bay.
Recently the problem of the fouling organisms, especially Sn-compounds is expanded to environmental problems from the chemical reaction with imposex and secondary contamination. One of the existing antifouling system, antifouling paints, is regulated from 2012, July because of seriousness about toxic substances such as TBT, mercury, copper and so on. TBT is known that causes a variety of biological inhibition in various chemicals even a very small amount of concentration. So it has been developed to replace it. In this paper, we try to develope a new system with the environmental background and the research of the adhesion characteristics of fouling organisms using a low current, high frequency high voltage pulse power, not toxic compounds.
Resent advances in computer technology have introduced a sophisticated capability for computing the biological fate of toxicants in a biological system. This methodology, which has drastically altered risk assessment skill in toxicology, is designed using all the mechanistic information, and all claim better accuracy with extrapolating capability Iron animal to people than conventional pharmacokinetic methods. Biologically based mathematical models in which the specific mechanistic steps governing tissue disposition(pharmacokinetics) and toxic action (pharmacodynamics) of chemicals are constructed in quantitative terms by a set of equations loading to prediction of the outcome of specific toxicological experiments by computer simulation. pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic models are useful in risk assessment because their mechanistic biological basis permits the high-to-low dose, route to route and interspecies extrapolation of the tissue disposition and toxic action of chemicals.
Metal ions exist in seawater, groundwater and industrial wastewaters. These source waters can be recycled if their concentrations are reduced. A number of processes can be applied for this purpose. Liquid-liquid extraction is one of the promising methods. In this paper, experimental results are presented on the removal of Cr(VI) using Aliquat-336, a reactive carrier, in sunflower oil (a non-toxic solvent). The performance of this new system is compared with those of kerosene (a toxic solvent). The extent of removal of Cr(VI) from samples with high and low concentrations are presented. The process was upgraded to a bench-scale module that can selectively remove about 50-90% Cr(VI) from samples of groundwater. Thus this process can produce water within the acceptable range for recycling and for use in secondary purposes such as irrigation.
The growth and heavy metal experiments revealed oppositive interactions between toxic metals(Zn and Cd) and Mn when the coastal diatom T. pseudonana were used. Cd and Zn inhibited the algal growth rate only at low Mn ion concentrations and this effect could be accounted for an inhibition of cellular Mn take by the toxic metals. Mn and Zn inhibited cellular Cd take and this indicated a reciprocal effects among the metals with respect to metal take. Saturation kinetics modeling of the take data was consistent with two metals competing with each other for binding to the Mn take system and with both Cd and Mn being transported into the cell by that system. Mathematical modeling of Mn and Cd take data revealed evidence fur a Cd efflux system.
In order to study the change in mechanical properties and anti-flammablilty of ethylene-ethylacrylate copolymer(EEA) very low density polyethylene(VLDPE) compound that could be used as communication cable sheath using $Mg(OH)_2$ as a non-toxic flame retardant, 100, 125, and 150phr $Mg(OH)_2$ were added to 100 parts of EEA-VLDPE compound, 100 EEA : 0 VLDPE, 50 EEA : 50 VLDPE, and 0 EEA : 100 VLDPE, respectively. $Mg(OH)_2$ was a good non-toxic flame retardant for communication cable sheath and anti-flammability increased with the amount of $Mg(OH)_2$ in compound. The mechanical properties-MI, Ts, and Eb-decreased with increasing in the mixing ratio of EEA but oxygen index(OI) increased with increasing in the amount of EEA. The best composition of $Mg(OH)_2$ in this study was 150phr to 50 EEA : 50 VLDPE compound for the anti-flammability.
Imazosulfuron is globally considered as a relatively safe herbicide that controls plant growth by interfering with amino acid synthesis. It is stable, persists in the soil, and has low toxicity; however, studies about the toxic effects of imazosulfuron on non-targeted aquatic vertebrates are scarce. In this study, imazosulfuron was able to induce acute lethality on zebrafish embryos within 48 h. Imazosulfuron also had adverse effects on heartbeats and induced abnormal development with pericardial edema and scoliosis. Moreover, apoptosis and oxidative stress were increased by imazosulfuron in a dose-dependent manner. Thus, all our results showed that imazosulfuron has toxic effects on zebrafish embryogenesis.
