  • Using the oceanographic data during 196s~ 1983, the seasonal variation of the water type in the Tsushima Current is discussed by analyzing the thermosteric anomaly $(\delta_T)$. By investigating with the index of $33.8\%_{\circ}$ in salinity, it is shown that the low saline water inflowed through the Korea Strait affects the variations of water type in surface layer from summer to fall. On the sea surface, the value of $\delta_T$ is affected mainly by the sea surface temperature (SST). However, in summer, $\delta_T$ is temporarily influenced by the transitional characteristic of the surface salinity. It has the minimum value in winter when the SST is the highest and the sea surface salinity is the lowest. In fall, it decreases as the SST decreases. Specifically, the value of $\delta_T$ is 779 cl/t in August in the region of Korea Strait and 667 cl/t in September in the East Coast of Korea. These values are larger than that of the Kuroshio where is 622 cl/t in August. This phenomenon is due to the inflow of low saline water into these area during summer. In loom depth, the seasonal variation of the $\delta_T$ is not so significant as the surface and is mainly dependent on the annual temperature variation. In general, $\delta_T$ decreases as the Tsushima Current flows to the north.

  • Titrated Extract of Centella asiatica (TECA) is a poorly water-soluble extract from the Centella asiatica. Despite excellent wound preparation causes pain due to a low aqueous solubility and high hypertonicity and therefore, the patient's compliance of this drug is low. The objective of this study is to design a formulation of TECA with an improved therapeutic applicability via an adequate solubilization. A mixture of propylene glycol and ethoxylated hydrogenated caster oil achieved an acceptable solubilization of TECA (i.e. 10%) via a formulation of micelle. A preparation of extemporaneous TECA micelle was achieved by a dilution of the original micellar formulation with either water or saline. An estimated distribution of particle size was between 15.9 and 32.6 ㎜. The osmotic pressure of the formulation was found to be much lower than that found In a commercially available injectable (i.e. Madecassole). The erthrocytic hemolysis of micellar solution was lower than that with the conventional dosage form, consistent with the osmotic pressure data. Pain score after an injection of the micellar solution was assessed by the hind-paw writhing test using ICR mice and compared with that found with the conventional injectable. The data indicated that the injection of the micellar solution was a significantly less painful. These results indicated that a micellar solubilization, followed by an extemporaneous dilution, is a novel formulation of TECA with an improved therapeutic applicability.

  • Mother liquid discharged from a salt-manufacturing plant was electrodialyzed at 25 and $40^{\circ}C$ in a continuous process integrated with $SO_4{^{2-}}$ ion low-permeable anion-exchange membranes to remove $Na_2SO_4$ and recover NaCl in the mother liquid. Performance of electrodialysis was evaluated by measuring ion concentration in a concentrated solution, permselectivity coefficient of $SO_4{^{2-}}$ ions against $Cl^-$ ions, current efficiency, cell voltage, energy consumption to obtain one ton of NaCl and membrane pair characteristics. The permselectivity coefficient of $SO_4{^{2-}}$ ions against $Cl^-$ ions was low enough particularly at $40^{\circ}C$ and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ transport across anion-exchange membranes was prevented successfully. Applying the overall mass transport equation, $Cl^-$ ion and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ ion transport across anion-exchange membranes is evaluated. $SO_4{^{2-}}$ ion transport number is decreased due to the decrease of electro-migration of $SO_4{^{2-}}$ ions across the anion-exchange membranes. $SO_4{^{2-}}$ ion concentration in desalting cells becomes higher than that in concentration cells and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ ion diffusion is accelerated across the anion-exchange membranes from desalting cells toward concentrating cells.

  • In present work, experiments conducted to investigate the heat transfer characteristics and relationship between operating parameters and production of fresh water as output of the system. Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE) applied in vacuum evaporator for product fresh water that system intended to efficiently use low grade heat. PHE have become popular in chemical, power, food and refrigeration industries due to the efficient heat transfer performance, extremely compact design and flexibility of extend or modify to suit changed duty. The heat transfer part contains corrugated plates with 60 degree of chevron angle which verified by many researchers and commonly apply. Fresh water can be produced from saline water under near vacuum pressure by operating ejector. Consequently, evaporating temperature stay around $51-57^{\circ}C$ so it is possible to use any low grade heat source or renewable source. The maximum fresh water produced by freshwater generator with plat heat exchanger applied in the study was designed as 1.0 Ton/day.

  • Oceanographic observation and qualitative analysis for deep ocean water in the East Sea were carried out from January 2003 to January 2004, in order to understand the characteristics of deep sea water in the East Sea. Temporal and spatial variation of water masses were discussed from survey of the study area including the coastal sea of Kwangwon province in where the polar front mixing cold and warm water masses were formed. On the basis of the vertical profiles of temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen, water masses in the study area were divided into 5 major groups; (1) Low Saline Surface Water (LSSW) (2) Tsushima Surface water (TSW) (3) Tsushima Middle Water (TMW) (4) North Korea Cold Water (NKCW) and (5) East Sea Proper Water (ESPW). In winter, surface water in coastal sea of Kwangwaan Kosung region were dominated by North Korean Cold Water (NKCW). As Tsushima warm current were enforced in summer, various water masses were vertically emerged in study area, in order of TSW, TMW, NKCW and ESPW. It is highly possible that the LSSW which occurred at surface water of september is originated from influx of fresh water due to the seasonal rainy spell. Nevertheless water masses existed within surface water were seasonally varied, water quality characteristics of East Sea Proper Water (ESPW) under 300 m did not changed all the seasons of the year.

  • The present study was performed to describe the influence of water temperature and salinity on filtration rates of the venus clam, Gomphina veneriformis, a suspension-feeding (filter-feeding) bivalve species. The calmswere collected from the eastern coastal area of Sokcho, Gangneung and Jumunjin at Kangwon-do, Korea, during December 2006 and May 2007. Isochrysis galbana (KMCC H-002) cells as food organisms were indoor-cultured by f/2 medium, and were used to measure the filtration rate of clam. Filtration rates of clam were measured by indirect method. Cell concentration of food organisms were determined by direct counting cells used the hemacytometer under the light microscope. The filtration rates of clams by water temperature sharply increased with temperatures up to $15^{\circ}C$ as optimum temperature and above this temperature, the filtration rates decreased exponentially. Venus clams showed very low filtration rates at low salinity (10-15 psu) and maximum values at high salinity (30-35 psu). Regardless of water temperature and salt change, 2-year class clams showed high filtration rates, but low in 4-year-class. Polynomial regression curves with water temperature were shifted to the left in low temperature region. Thermal coefficient $Q_{10}$ values showed much higher values at low temperature range than at high temperature range, too. These results indicate that the venus clam is more sensitive in cold water. Polynomial regression curves with salinity were shifted to the right in high saline region. According to this study, the venus clam Gomphina veneriformis, subtidal filter-feeding bivalve, was the stenothermal organism, inhabited mainly in low temperature and the stenohaline, in high saline waters.

  • To investigate the solute pattern of salt marsh plants in Suncheon Bay in Korea, plants and soil samples were collected at three sites from July to September 2011. The soil pH around the investigated species was weakly alkaline, 6.9-8.1. The total ion and Cl- content of site 1 gradually increased, while those of site 2 and site 3 were lowest in August and highest in September. The exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $K^+$ in the soil were relatively constant during the study period, but the soil exchangeable $Na^+$ content was variable. Carex scabrifolia and Phragmites communis had constant leaf water content and very high concentrations of soluble carbohydrates during the study period. However, Suaeda malacosperma and S. japonica had high leaf water content and constant very low soluble carbohydrate concentrations. Carex scabrifolia accumulated similar amounts of $Na^+$ and $K^+$ ions in its leaves. Phragmites communis contained a high concentration of $K^+$ ions. Suada japonica and S. malacosperma had more $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ ions than $K^+$ ions in their leaves. Suaeda japonica had higher levels of glycine betaine in its leaves under saline conditions than C. scabrifolia and P. communis. Consequently, the physiological characteristics of salt marsh chenopodiaceous plants (S. japonica and S. malacosperma) were the high storage capacity for inorganic ions (especially alkali cations and chloride) and accumulation of glycine betaine, but monocotyledonous plant species (C. scabrifolia and P. communis) showed high $K^+$concentrations, efficient regulation of ionic uptake, and accumulation of soluble carbohydrates. These characteristics might enable salt marsh plants to grow in saline habitats.

  • In this paper we investigated the relation between the surface degradations and anti-pollution characteristics of Room Temperature Vulcanized(RTV) silicone rubber coating that has different roughness through immersing into saline water. We utilized several analytic techniques such as atomic force microscopy(AFM) scaning electron microscopy(SEM) contact angle Salt Deposit Density(SDD) and average leakage current under the condition of salt fog. It is found that the surface roughness of treated RTV silicone rubber increased and the hydrophobicity of sample surface decreased with increasing the duration o immersion into water due to the erosion of base polymer the melting down alumina trihydrate(ATH) and the diffusion of Low Molecular weight(LMW) fluid. Despite the roughness of surface had been increased by water immersion excellant anti-pollution and recovery characteristics were maintained and SDD saturated to 0.1~0.14mg/cm$^2$. The average leakage current under salt fog increased with surface roughness. Measurement of average leakage current will be helpful to investigate surface degradation and lifetime expectation of RTV silicone coating.

  • The repeated toxicity of Gleditschia-saponin produced and provided by S.S. Bio-Tech Bench Co. was evaluated in Sprague-Dawley rats. Gleditschia-saponin was administered to rats by oral route at dose levels of high (180 mg/kg/day), medium (90 mg/kg/day) and low (45 mg/kg/day) once a day for 14 days. Saline was administered to another group of rats as control. Each group was consisted of 5 male and female rats. There were no dose-related changes in clinical findings, food and water consumption, organ weights, urine analysis, biochemical examination and hematological findings in all groups of animals treated with Gleditschia.- saponin, except body weights. Body weighs in male and female rats were increased significantly (p < 0.05) from day 4 to 14 in low, middle and high dose groups than control group. Body weight in high dose group was increased higher than control or low, middle dose groups on day 14. Gross and histopathological findings revealed no evidence of specific toxicity to Gleditschia.-saponin. Therefore, it was concluded that Gleditschia-saponin had no toxic or side effects in Sprague-Dawley rats in an repeated oral toxicity tests.

  • Water movement in the Young San River Estuary where a sea dyke was constructed, was observed using anacoustic doppler profiler (ADP) and two TGPS buoys for 25 hours on 27-28 July 2000. Hydrographic observations were simultaneously taken using CTD to understand the characteristic of the spacial structure of temperature and salinity. A large quantity of fresh water was discharged from the sea dyke on 26 July 2000. The observation period fell on neap tide. The amplitude of the tidal elevation and the maximum velocity of the tidal current were about 4 m and 12 cm/sec respectively. The water movement at the surface layer is mainly controlled by wind, and those at the other layers are controlled by semidiurnal tide. The low salinity water less than 22 psu was observed along the northern part during the early observation period while southerly wind prevails. The less saline water moves westward and finally leaves the estuary by easterly wind early on the second day. We can divide the vertical structure into four layers by hydrography and current structure. Mean velocity structure shows that relatively less saline waters at the surface and the middle layer move seaward, and the waters at the upper and the bottom layers move landward. It is thought that the intermittent discharge of river water from the sea dyke makes vertical structure of four layers.
