  • Blast furnace slag (BFS) have many advantages that are related to effective value improvement on applying to concrete while side effects of blast furnace slag also appear. Thus, research team conducted an experiment with high volume slag to see if the attribute of waste alkali accelerator for mixing rate, mixed use of NaOH and $Na_2SiO_3$, and early strength agent for mixing rate for replacement ratio and for the types of the stimulants in order to increase the use of blast furnace slag1s powder. As the result of the experiment, when it comes to compression strength, all of the alkali stimulants have been improved as the replacement rate increases except for sodium hydroxide. Among the alkali stimulants, sodium silicate was high on dynamic elastic modulus and absorption factor. In case of early strength agent, the mix of mixing 1.5% and blast furnace slag 75% have showed high strength enhancement. In event of Waste Alkali accelerator, it has showed different consequences for each experiment.

  • Low liquid limit silt, widely distributed in the middle and down reaches of Yellow River, has the disadvantages of poor grading, less clay content and poor colloidal activity. It is very easy to cause vehicle jumping at the bridge-embankment transition section when the low liquid limit silt used as the backfill at the abutment back. In this paper, a series of laboratory tests were carried out to study the physical and mechanical properties of the low liquid limit silt used as back filling. Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) was excited by active MgO and hydrated lime to solidify silt as abutment backfill. The optimum ratio of firming agent and the compaction and mechanical properties of reinforced soil were revealed through compaction test and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) test was used to study the pore characteristics and hydration products of reinforced soil. 6% hydrated lime and alkali activated slag were used to solidify silt and fill the model of subgrade respectively. The pavement settlement regulation and soil internal stress-strain regulation of subgrade with different materials under uniformly distributed load were studied by model experiment. The effect of alkali activated slag curing agent on curing silt was verified. The research results can provide technical support for highway construction in silt area of the Yellow River alluvial plain.

  • Interaction of alkali oxides and SO3 and C3S formation and microstructure was studied using K2CO3 and Na2CO3 as alkali sources and (NH4)2SO4 for SO3. When SO3/K2O=1.43 as mole ratio, K2O and SO3 react to form K2SO4, this phase is immiscible with other oxide melt and thus could not affect C3S formation as well as its microstructure. In a condition of SO3/K2O 1, C3S crystals were round and grown in a much larger size. With addition of Na2O and SO3 by only 1wt% each, C3S formation was strongly hindered. Since C2S was stabilized by Na+ and SO4-2, it could not react to give C3S formation. However in the condition of SO3/Na2O=1.43, a little amount of C3S was formed. It is considered that small amount of Na2SO4 was formed, this phase was immiscible with clinker liquid, and the C3S crystals were formed locally in the liquid part of relatively low Na2O and SO3 compositions. These crystals had irregular and rough surfaces and contained more inclusions than those grown from K2O.SO3 system.

  • The object of this research is to produce alkali activated fly ash-cement using low calcium fly ash as substitute for portland cement. The experimental program included activation of fly ash by a strong base(NaOH) at different concentration, temperature, and liquid-to-fly ash ratios. To achieve for higher compressive strength of the hardened product, sodium meta silicate is added to the alkaline solution. From the factors considered on strength development, the ratio of liquid/fly ash, the activator concentration and temperature always result to be significative factors. The optimization studied show that the alkaline solution concentration of $NaOH(210g)+Na_2SiO_3{\cdot}9H_2O(30g)+H_2O=1L$ at $50^{\circ}C$ produces the best alkali activation effect for the low calcium fly ash. SEM and XRD patterns showed that the components of alkali-activated fly ash consist mainly of mullite, quartz and amorphous aluminosilicate.

  • Pretreatment of eliminating FFA is needed to make biodiesel from animal fat recovered from leather wastes because its acid value is high. This study was carried out to investigate the influence of 4 different pretreatment methods, which are heterogeneous catalyst method, ion exchange resin method, low pressure.high temperature method, and alkali method on the eliminating FFA and fatty acid composition. The results showed that the rate of eliminating FFA increased in the order of alkali method > catalyst method > low pressure high temperature method > ion exchange method. In the case of pretreatment of alkali method using NaOH, the rate of eliminating FFA appeared more than 86% regardless of acid value. Therefore, it was considered that alkali method using NaOH was the most effective in the view of economical and productive aspects, taking it into account that the acid value of animal fat recovered from fleshing scrap generated during leather making processes was 7 to 8.

  • Densification is an effective method for improving the physical and mechanical properties of low-density wood. However, the set-recovery of dimensions was found to be the problem of densified wood due to low fixation during the densification process. Alkali pretreatment before densification is thought to be a modification process to improve the dimensional stability of densified wood. In this research, the wood samples used were boiled in a 1.25 N sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution at different times, followed by densification for 5 h at 100℃. The alkali pretreatment for 1, 3, and 5 h of boiling increased the dimensional stability of densified woods and anti-swelling efficiency values were 8.52%, 63.24%, and 48.94%, respectively. The boiling of wood in NaOH solution decreased the holocellulose content, as well as lignin to a lesser degree, and a lower crystallinity index was observed. The lower hydroxyl groups and a higher proportion of lignin in treated samples seem to have contributed to the high dimensional stability detected.

  • The influence of glucose concentration on cell growth rate and on the expression level of the strong promoter obtained from alkali-tolerant Bacillus sp. YA-14 chromosomal DNA was studied. In fed-batch culture, the promoter activity could be maximized by maintaining a very low level of glucose concentration in the broth and glucose consumption rate below 1.08g/g cell-h. The induction of the promoter was possible by addition of sporulation medium after the cell was grown in growth medium with only low level of CAT activity.

  • This study is about the mortar in which fine aggregate is substituted by low-carbon eco-friendly inorganic composite prepared by addition of alkali accelerator in industrial by-products such as blast furnace slag, red mud and silica fume as a replacement for cement. Results of experiments on flow and strength properties in mortar of inorganic composite according to replacement rate of fine aggregate showed that amount of air and table flow decreased as replacement rate of fine aggregate about inorganic composite got higher. Also, it's shown that the compressive strength was the highest at replacement rate 50% of fine aggregate about inorganic composite.

  • This paper investigates the experimental and simulated time-varying magnetic field generation in a chlor-alkali manufacturing process. 19kA thyristor-based rectifier is modeled and analyzed. The performance is compared and evaluated on the basis of exposure guidelines from ICNIRP. The mechanical structure of current carrying conductor is simplified as an infinite long busbar model and low frequency harmonic contents up to 65kHz are considered. Thyristor rectifier generates a significant amount of low frequency magnetic field harmonic contents both at ac and dc busbar of rectifier infringing the limit of ICNIRP. Along with simulation analysis the experimental measurement of the time-varying magnetic field in ac input busbar, rectifier block, dc load and busbar are presented. The experimental test results partly confirm the simulation results.

  • Adsorption is one of the most efficient method for the separation of low level carbon dioxide. In order to enhance the adsorption capacity, a few additives such as alkali hydroxides were combined with the zeolitic sorbents. As a result of the experimental examination by applying the $CO_2$ flow of 3000 ppm, the composite sorbent showed the improved quality to a certain degree and the added binder was also found to contribute to better adsorption.
