  • In this paper, we report a microthermostat using PDMS (poly-dimethylsiloxane) and glass. This PDMS/glass chip is able to maintain constant temperature that is necessary for restriction enzyme reaction. Since PDMS is the low-cost and the mass-producible material and has very good biochemical compatibility, PDMS chip has more benefit than general Si chip. Heater was made of Au wiring patterned on Pyrex glass. A reaction chamber has a capacity of about 3 ${mu}ell$. We performed a restriction enzyme reaction by using the fabricated microthermostat and conventional method. Then, with the electrophoresis, we made a comparison between the result from the micro reactor and the one from conventional method.

  • High purity Si powder was prepared in the system of $SiO_2-Mg$ combustion reaction. Various conditions of combustion reaction and leaching were investigated. As the particle size of Mg decreased and the compaction pressure increased the quantity of the unreacted power was decreased. In the acid leaching of MgO, increasing particle size, reaction temperature, rotating speed and reaction time made leaching effect low. Final Si powder produced by combustion and leaching reaction, has a high purity of 99.9% with irregular shape.

  • Fining and homogenization of melts during batch melting is closely related to the redox reaction of polyvalent element M (M: Sb, As etc), $M^{(x+n)+}+n/2O^{2-}{\rightarrow}M^{x+}+n/4O_2$. In this study, square wave voltammetry (SWV) measurements were performed to examine the redox behavior of an antimony ion in cathode ray tube (CRT) glass melts. According to results, well-separated two peaks are shown at low temperature while only one peak is shown at high temperature in voltammograms, which reveals that redox reaction of antimony consist of two steps: $Sb^{5+}/Sb^{3+}\;and\;Sb^{3+}/Sb^0$, depending on the temperature. Based on the peak potential shown in the voltammogram, the thermodynamic data and the redox ratio for two redox couple were determined.

  • It is a challenge from an industrial point of view to fabricate silicon nitride substrates with high thermal conductivity and good mechanical properties for power devices from high-purity Si scrap powder by means of thick film processes such as tape casting. We characterize the residual carbon and oxygen content after the binder burnout followed by nitridation as a function of the temperature in the temperature range of $300^{\circ}C-700^{\circ}C$ and the atmosphere in a green tape sample which consists of high-purity Si powder and polymer binders such as polyvinyl butyral and dioctyl phthalate. The optimum condition of binder burnout is suggested in terms of the binder removal temperature and atmosphere. If considering nitridation, the burnout of the organic binder in air compared to that in a nitrogen atmosphere could offer an advantage when fabricating reaction-bonded $Si_3N_4$ substrates for power devices to enable low carbon and oxygen contents in green tape samples.

  • In this study, we made low temperature plasma reactor in order to treat safely $NO_x$ which included in the gas. We investigated experimently and inspected efficiency characteristics of equipment about flow rate of reactant material and discharge input power which supplied into reactor. As a reaction gas, by using mixture gas of $NO/N_2$ and $N_2/O_2$, we setted up initial NO concentration and supplied the speed of a current to 1~4 l/min. When the amount of flow increased, reduction rate of NO was low. Also when discharge input power was high, decomposition of NO was easy. Also the longer delay time of reaction material and the higher discharge input power was, the higher decomposition energy efficiency was. And when the amount of flow was much, and the more discharge input power increased, the more ozone generated.

  • In order to improve the selective oxidation reaction of gaseous ammonia at a low temperature, various types of metal-impregnated activated alumina were prepared, and also physical and chemical properties of the conversion of ammonia were determined. Both types of metal (Cu, Ag) impregnated activated alumina show high conversion rate of ammonia at high temperature (over $300^{\circ}C$). However, at lower temperature ($200^{\circ}C$), Ag-impregnated catalyst shows the highest conversion rate (93%). In addition, the effects of lattice oxygen of the developed catalyst was studied. Ce-impregnated catalyst showed higher conversion rate than commercial alumina, but also showed lower conversion rate than Ag-impregnated sample. Moreover, 5 vol.% of Ag activation under hydrogen shows the highest conversion rate result. Finally, through high conversion at low temperature, it was considered that the production of NO and $NO_2$, toxic by-products, were effectively inhibited.

  • The effects of $B_2O_3$ addition on the low-temperature sintering behavior and microwave dielectric properties of $(Zn_{0.8}Mg_{0.2})TiO_3$ ceramic system were investigated. Highly dense samples were obtained at the sintering temperatures below $900^{\circ}C$. The $Q{\times}f_o$ values were determined by the microstructures and sintering shrinkages which are affected by the amount of $B_2O_3$ and sintering temperature. Temperature coefficient of resonance frequency($T_f$) changes to a positive value with increasing the amount of $B_2O_3$ due to the increased amount of rutile phase which is one of the reaction products between $(Zn_{0.8}Mg_{0.2})TiO_3$ and $B_2O_3$. For $6.19 moi.{\%}B_2O_3$-added $(Zn_{0.8}Mg_{0.2})TiO_3$ system, it exhibits ${\epsilon}_r$ = 23.5, $Q{\times}f_o$ = 53,000 GHz, and $T_f$ = 0 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ when sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ for 5 h.

  • Aragonite type of precipitated calcium carbonate was synthesized by the successive reaction with hybridization of waste scallop shells with limestone. In the first step, carbonation was performed by using calcined limestone with low brightness, followed by the additional carbonation using calcined-hydrous scallop shells with high brightness. The temperature and the amount ratio of calcined limestone to calcined-hydrous scallop shells were examined as parameters in the experimental conditions. The products were characterized by XRD, SEM. in addition to measurements of brightness index. the specific surface area, and bulk density. The amount ratio of limestone to scallop shell affected not only the brightness but also morphologies of products. The increase in relative amounts of limestone leads to decrease in brightness and bumpy surface of particles. High temperature reaction produces aragonite particles with longer sizes and higher bulk densities. This study has made an attempt to establish the synthesis of aragonite with high brightness and high strength by utilization of waste scallop shells.

  • The reaction mechanism of selective catalytic reduction of NOx over sewage sludge char impregnated with MnOx using $NH_3$ as the reducing agent was investigated. The active Mn phase was shown to be $Mn_3O_4$ from the XRD analysis. Adsorption was the dominant NOx removal mechanism at low temperatures below $150^{\circ}C$ although reduction reaction also contributed partly to the NOx removal at $100{\sim}150^{\circ}C$. The reaction rate constants of NOx removal over non-impregnated and MnOx-impregnated active chars were compared based on experimental results. The MnOx-impregnated char was shown to have a higher reaction rate constant and a higher NOx removal efficiency due to a higher collision coefficient and a lower activation energy. The activation energy for both chars was shown to be relatively low (10~12 kJ/mol) under the experimental conditions of this study.

  • Sodium borohydride, $NaBH_4$, shows a number of advantages as hydrogen source for portable proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The durability of Co-P-B/Cu catalyst for sodium borohydride hydrolysis reaction was studied. The effect of reaction temperature, $NaBH_4$ concentration, NaOH concentration and calcination temperature of catalyst on the durability of Co-P-B/Cu catalyst were measured. The gel formed during hydrolysis reaction affected the durability of catalyst (loss of catalyst). Formation of gel increased the loss of the catalyst. When $NaBH_4$ concentration was high and reaction temperature was higher than $60^{\circ}C$, loss of catalyst was low because gel was not formed. But under the temperature of $40^{\circ}C$, loss of catalyst increased due to gel formation When $NaBH_4$ concentration was 40 weight % and the reaction temperature was $40^{\circ}C$, the loss of catalyst increased as the NaOH concentration increased. As the calcination temperature of catalyst decreased, the loss of catalyst decreased and the activity of catalyst decreased. Calcination of the catalyst at high temperature enhanced the durability of catalyst but diminished the activity of catalyst.
