Conventional plasma carburizing or nitriding for austenitic stainless steels results in a degradation of corrosion resistance. However, a low temperature plasma surface treatment can improve surface hardness without deteriorating the corrosion resistance. The 2-step low temperature plasma processes (the combined carburizing and post nitriding) offers the increase of both surface hardness and thickness of hardened layer and corrosion resistance than the individually processed low temperature nitriding and low temperature carburizing techniques. In the present paper, attempts have been made to investigate the influence of the introduction of Ar gas (0~20%) in nitriding atmosphere during low temperature plasma nitriding at $370^{\circ}C$ after low temperature plasma carburizing at $470^{\circ}C$. All treated specimens exhibited the increase of the surface hardness with increasing Ar level in the atmosphere and the surface hardness value reached up to 1050 HV0.1, greater than 750 $HV_{0.1}$ in the carburized state. The expanded austenite phase (${\gamma}_N$) was observed on the most of the treated surfaces. The thickness of the ${\gamma}_N$ layer reached about $7{\mu}m$ for the specimen treated in the nitriding atmosphere containing 20% Ar. In case of 10% Ar containing atmosphere, the corrosion resistance was significantly enhanced than untreated austenitic stainless steels, whilst 20% Ar level in the atmosphere caused to form CrN in the N-enriched layer (${\gamma}_N$), which led to the degradation of corrosion resistance compared with untreated austenitic stainless steels.
Cotton fabrics were treated by low temperature plasma and/or cellulase, and its physical and dyeing properties were investigated. All the pretreatments of the cotton with low temperature plasma of oxygen, nitrogen and argon slowed down the rate of weight loss of cotton in cellulase solution. Plasma pretreatment did not show any strength retention effect on cotton fiber in the subsequent cellulase treatment. Pretreatment of cotton with low temperature oxygen plasma decreased the rate of dyeing in direct dye bath, while cellulase or plasma/cellulase pretreatment increased the rate. Equilibrium dye uptake of cotton was not changed greatly by the pretreatments except the normal untreated cotton showed more or less high uptake. The pretreatment of cellulase with a water-soluble carbodiimide reduced the enzymatic activity, and did not show any strength retention of cotton in enzymatic weight loss.
SiN and SiCN film production using plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD) is investigated in this study. A developed high-power and high-density multiple inductively coupled plasma (multi-ICP) source is used for a low temperature PE-ALD process. High plasma density and good uniformity are obtained by high power $N_2$ plasma discharge. Silicon nitride films are deposited on a 300-mm wafer using the PE-ALD method at low temperature. To analyze the quality of the SiN and SiCN films, the wet etch rate, refractive index, and growth rate of the thin films are measured. Experiments are performed by changing the applied power and the process temperature ($300-500^{\circ}C$).
In order to study on the surface modification of the poly(ethylene Terephthalate)(PET) fabrics, low temperature plasma$(O_2)$ has been irradiated on the PET fabrics in various conditions. Experiments were carried out at pressure ranging from 0.5 tort to 3 tort. The properties of PET fabrics treated with low temperature plasma($(O_2)$, such as bathochromic, wettability, antistatic property were measured. Etching ratio was increased as the pressure and the output of discharge increased. When its were put on the cathode, the most efficient effect of etching according to the position of sample between anode and cathode was obtained. The bathochromic effect has more or less improved as pressure was getting higth in case of dyed fabrics treated with only low temperature plasma$(O_2)$ . And when it was treated with the low refractive index resin, the bathochromic of dyed fabrics treated with low temperature plasma$(O_2)$ was better than that of the dyed fabrics untreated.

Various types of plasma source applied in $CH_4$ decomposition process are compared. DBD by pulse and AC power, spark by pulse and AC power, rotating arc and hollow cathode plasma are chosen to be compared. The results show that $CH_4$ conversion per given unit power is relatively high in hollow cathode plasma and rotating arc that induces rather high temperature condition and that is why both thermal dehydration and plasma induced decomposition contribute for the overall process. In case of DBD wherein high temperature electron and low temperature gas molecule coexist, the process shows low conversion rate, for in rather low temperature condition the contribution of thermal dehydration is lowered. Selectivity of $C_2H_6$ and $C_2H_2$ is shown to be a good parameter of the relative contribution of plasma chemistry in the overall process. From the results we concluded that required condition of plasma source for a cost effective and high yield $CH_4$ decomposition is to have characteristics of both thermal plasma and non thermal plasma in which temperature is high above a certain threshold state for thermal dehydration and electron induced collision is maximized in the same breath.

The 2-step low temperature plasma processes (the combined carburizing and post-nitriding) offer the increase of both surface hardness and thickness of hardened layer and corrosion resistance than the individually processed low temperature nitriding and low temperature carburizing techniques. The 2-step low temperature plasma processes were carried out for improving both the surface hardness and corrosion resistance of AISI 316L stainless steel. The influence of gas compositions on the surface properties during nitriding step were investigated. The expanded austenite (${\gamma}_N$) was formed on all of the treated surface. The thickness of ${\gamma}_N$ and concentration of N on the surface increased with increasing both nitrogen gas and Ar gas levels in the atmosphere. The thickness of ${\gamma}_N$ increased up to about $20{\mu}m$ and the thickness of entire hardened layer was determined to be about $40{\mu}m$. The surface hardness was independent of nitrogen and Ar gas contents and reached up to about 1200 $HV_{0.1}$ which is about 5 times higher than that of untreated sample (250 $HV_{0.1}$). The corrosion resistance in 2-step low temperature plasma processed austenitic stainless steels was also much enhanced than that in the untreated austenitic stainless steels due to a high concentration of N on the surface.

Micro plasma has been recently studied to investigate the effects on various cells. We study a micro-plasma produced by a plasma needle that is operated with RF power and its effects on G361 melanoma cells. The micro plasma size ranges from sub-mm to several mm at a few watts of RF power. For the bio-medical treatment, low-temperature plasma is obtained and gas temperature is controlled within several tens of degrees $(^{\circ}C)$ in order not to disturb cell activities. Elementary spectroscopic studies to obtain plasma characteristics are presented for Ar and He plasma with different frequencies of RF power. Also the preliminary results of the micro plasma effects on G361 melanoma cells are presented. It was observed that the irradiation of micro plasma induces cell death through the deprivation of tyrosine phosphorylation in the G361 cells.
This research was attempted to improve the hydrophilicity of polypropylene(PP) by using low temperature plasma polymerization of acrylic acid(AA) as a starting material. The results of the present study were as follows: The PP films deposited with AA plasma polymer showed excellent hydrophilicity, that the polar parts were about 20 dyn/cm, and also that the surface tensions were about 55 dyn/cm, whereas the disperse parts were not changed. Work of adhesions of the PP films deposited with AA plasma polymer were above 100 erg/ $cm^{2}$. AA plasma polymer formed by low temperature plasma polymerization of acrylic acid(AA) was even thin layer which contained many -OH groups.

Plasma hardly grows in low pressure because of lack of collision. Especially, in extremely low pressure like 1 mTorr, the experiment scale is far larger than mean free path therefore plasma is hardly generated in such low pressure. But low pressure plasma has useful properties like low damage or fine sputtering process because it has typically low electron density. In here, thermal electron is used to make breakdown in low pressure easily and cylindrical geometry is used to help discharge easily. And we changed magnetic field strength to control electron density or temperature. In low pressure, density and temperature behavior is very interesting so its characteristics are examined here.
Wool and silk fabrics dyed with C.l. Acid Black 155 were subjected to sputter etching and exposed to a low temperature argon plasma. Color depth of shade of the fabrics increased considerably, but sputter etching was more effectively than argon low temperature plasma treatment. And measured for any significant chemical modification by ESCA (XPS). Sputter etching and argon low temperature plasma treatments incorporated oxygen atoms into the surface.
