The Effect of Folding Wing on Aerodynamics and Power Consumption of a Flapping Wing

  • Experimental study on the unsteady aerodynamics analysis and power consumption of a folding wing is accomplished using a wind tunnel testing. A folding wing model is fabricated and actuated using servo motors. The flapping wing consists of an inboard main wing and an outboard folding wing. The aerodynamic forces and consumed powers of the flapping wing are measured by changing the flapping and folding wings inside a low-speed wind tunnel. In order to calculate the aerodynamic forces, the measured forces are modified using static test data. It was found that the effect of the folding wing on the flapping wing's total lift is small but the effect of the folding wing on the total thrust is larger than the main wing. The folding motion requires the extra use of the servo motor. Thus, the amount of the energy consumption increases when both the wings are actuated together. As the flight speed increases, the power consumption of the folding wing decreases which results in energy saving.

  • High cycle fatigue life for the cables with two different types of clamps is estimated comparatively through acceleration testing. The high cycle fatigue fracture of overhead lines is caused mainly by the aeolian vibration which is induced by vortex shedding. It is necessary to manage the integrity of cables continuedly considering that the aeolian vibration is unavoidable since it occurs in steady and relatively low wind velocity. Two types of clamps which are largely used for overhead lines of the distribution grids are selected and failure data are obtained by step stress testing with a electrodynamic shaker with them. The inverse power law is assumed to describe the stress-life relationship and the fatigue limit at any specified life is supposed to follow Weibull distribution. The life of the cable is defined as the number of cycles to the time that one of strands is completely broken. Finally, the fatigue limits of the cables with two clamp types are estimated at the reference life of 500 Mcycles and compared each other based on a bending vibration amplitude.

  • Recently, Mobile multimedia equipments as smart phone and tablet pc requirement is increasing and this market is also being expanded. These mobile equipments require large multi-media function, so more power consumption is required. For these reasons, the needs of power management IC as switching type dc-dc converter and linear regulator have increased. DC-DC buck converter become more important in power management IC because the operating voltage of VLSI system is very low comparing to lithium-ion battery voltage. There are many people to be concerned about digital DC-DC converter without using external passive device recently. Digital controlled DC-DC converter is essential in mobile application to various external circumstance. This paper proposes the DC-DC Buck Converter using the AVR RISC 8-bit micro-processor control. The designed converter receives the input DC 18-30 [V] and the output voltage of DC-DC Converter changes by the feedback circuit using the A/D conversion function. Duty ratio is adjusted to maintain a constant output voltage 12 [V]. Proposed converter using the micro-processor control was compared to a typical boost converter. As a result, the current loss in the proposed converter was reduced about 10.7%. Input voltage and output voltage can be displayed on the LCD display to see the status of the operation.

  • 스캔 테스트를 위한 테스트 데이터의 양과 파워 소모는 SoC 테스트에서의 최근의 직면한 가장 큰 문제들이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 저전력 테스트를 고려한 새로운 테스트 데이터 압축 방법을 제안한다. 제안하는 압축 방법은 테스트 데이터 압축을 위해 압축율, 전력 소모 감소율과 하드웨어 오버헤드를 고려하여 최대 효율을 가지도록 하는데 기초하고 있다. 압축율과 전력 감소율을 높이기 위해서 본 논문에서는 IR (Input Reduction) 기법과 MSCIR (Modified Statistical Code using Input Reduction) 압축 코드을 사용하며, 뿐만아니라 이를 위한 사전 작업인 새로운 스캔 플립플롭 순서 재조합 기법 및 테스트 패턴 순서 재조합 방법을 제안한다. 기존의 연구와는 달리 CSR 구조를 사용하지 않고 원래의 테스트 데이터 $T_D$를 사용하여 압축하는 방법을 사용한다. 이렇게 함으로써 제안하는 압축 방법은 기존의 연구에 비해 훨씬 높은 압축율을 가지며 낮은 하드웨어 오버헤드의 디컴프레션 구조와 적은 전력 소모를 가진다. ISCAS '89 벤치 회로에 대찬 기존의 연구와의 비교로서 그 결과를 알 수 있다.

Importance Analysis of In-Service Testing Components for Ulchin Unit 3 Using Risk-Informed In-Service Testing Approach

  • We performed an importance analysis of In-Service Testing (157) components for Ulchin Unit 3 using the integrated evaluation method for categorizing component safety significance developed in this study. The developed method is basically aimed at having a PSA expert perform an importance analysis using PSA and its related information. The importance analysis using the developed method is initiated by ranking the component importance using quantitative PSA information. The importance analysis of the IST components not modeled in the PSA is performed through the engineering judgment, based on the expertise of PSA, and the quantitative and qualitative information for the 157 components. The PSA scope for importance analysis includes not only Level 1 and 2 internal PSA but also Level 1 external and shutdown/low power operation PSA. The importance analysis results of valves show that 167 (26.55%) of the 629 IST valves are HSSCs and 462 (73.45%) are LSSCs. Those of pumps also show that 28 (70%)of the 40157 pumps are HSSCs and 12 (30%) are LSSCs.

  • 본 논문에서는 NoC(Network-on Chip) 구조로 구현된 core-based 시스템에 대한 효율적인 저전력 테스트 방법을 제안한다 NoC의 라우터 채널로 전송되는 테스트 데이터의 전력소모를 줄이기 위해서 스캔 벡터들을 채널 폭만큼의 길이를 갖는 flit으로 분할하고 nit간 천이율(switching rate)이 최소화 되도록 don't care 입력을 할당하였다. ISCAS 89 벤치마크에 대하여 실험을 한 결과, 제안된 방법은 약 35%의 전력 감소를 나타내었다.

  • A low voltage circuit breaker protects electrical equipments from over current and short faults of system by cutting the power supply. The breaker use a thermal magnetic type trip device from the past. In recent years, electronic type relays are applied due to useful functions and services. The purpose of this development is full digitalizing of relay functions of a low voltage breaker. It includes separation of current sensor from current transformer, digital signal processing, high speed relaying, and voltage measuring for power meter. The suggestions are tested and implemented by making prototype and testing its all relay functions.

  • Recently, much power demand from domestic power consumer is weakening the allowable power reserve margin in summer, especially at midday for one day due to a steep increase of air cooling loads such as air conditioner. Therefore solar airconditioning system can'be considered as one of the best remedies to meet the increase of peak power. Generally in solar air conditioning system, the diode rectifier is used to build up DC link voltage from AC source. The diode rectifier is simple and cheap but it brings out the problems of low power factor and plentiful harmonics at the AC source. Also It can derate the utilization rate of solar energy because the reverse of power flow cannot be made. Hence, in this paper to overcome the peak power problem in summer and to endure good AC input characteristics, solar air conditioning system using the PWM converter is proposed. As results, obtained are the characteristics of the PWM converter such as low distorted current waveform, high power factor and bidirectional power control. And also the stability of proposed system is verified by examining the dynamics of step load change and power reversal testing. (author). refs., figs., tabs.

Modeling and experimental comparative analysis on the performance of small-scale wind turbines

  • This paper deals with the design, wind tunnel testing, and performance analysis of small wind turbines targeting low-power applications. Three different small-size blade designs in terms of size, shape, and twisting angle are considered and tested. We conduct wind tunnel tests while measuring the angular speed of the rotating blades, the generated voltage, and the current under varying resistive loading and air flow conditions. An electromechanical model is also used to predict the measured voltage and power and verify their consistency and repeatability. The measurements are found in qualitative agreement with those reported in previously-published experimental works. We present a novel methodology to estimate the mechanical torque applied to the wind turbine without the deployment of a torque measuring device. This method can be used to determine the power coefficient at a given air speed, which constitutes an important performance indicator of wind turbines. The wind tunnel tests revealed the capability of the developed wind turbines to deliver more than 1225 mW when subject to an air flow with a speed of 7 m/s. The power coefficient is found ranging between 26% and 32%. This demonstrates the aerodynamic capability of the designed blades to extract power from the wind.

비등수형 원자로 발전소에의 레이저 피닝 적용기술 (Laser Peening Application for PWR Power Plants)

  • Toshiba has developed a laser peening system for PWRs(pressurized water reactors) as well after the one for BWRs(boiling water reactors), and applied it for BMI(bottom-mounted instrumentation) nozzles, core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles of Ikata Unit 1 and 2 of Shikoku Electric Power Company since 2004, which are Japanese operating PWR power plants. Laser pulses were delivered through twin optical fibers and irradiated on two portions in parallel to reduce operation time. For BMI nozzles, we developed a tiny irradiation head for small tubes and we peened the inner surface around J-groove welds after laser ultrasonic testing (LUT) as the remote inspection, and we peened the outer surface and the weld for Ikata Unit 2 supplementary. For core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles, we peened the inner surface of the dissimilar metal welding, which is of nickel base alloy, joining a safe end and a low alloy metal nozzle. In this paper, the development and the actual application of the laser peening system for PWR power plants will be described.
