Steady state computations are routinely used by design engineers to evaluate and compare losses in hydraulic components. In the case of the draft tube diffuser, however, experiments have shown that while a significant number of operating conditions can adequately be evaluated using steady state computations, a few operating conditions require unsteady simulations to accurately evaluate losses. This paper presents a study that assesses the predictive capacity of a combination of steady and unsteady RANS numerical computations to predict draft tube losses over the complete range of operation of a Francis turbine. For the prediction of the draft tube performance using k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model, a methodology has been proposed to average global performance indicators of steady flow computations such as the pressure recovery factor over an adequate number of periods to obtain correct results. The methodology will be validated using two distinct flow solvers, CFX and OpenFOAM, and through a systematic comparison with experimental results obtained on the FLINDT model draft tube.

This paper analyzes the losses of a Steinmetz connection three-phase induction motor which is supplied by a single-phase source. The T-type equivalent circuit which is taken no-load losses into account is used to determine phase converter capacitive reactances at starting and rated speed by using the condition of the minimum voltage unbalance. The starting and the operating capacitor are replaced at the slip of the same voltage unbalance factor points which are depicted using two capacitive reactances. The operation characteristics are investigated by comparing with those of three-phase balanced operation to find the feasibility of single-phase operation. To analyze the losses of this motor, the output power decrease factor(OPDF), the loss ratio(LR), the no load loss ratio(NLLR), the copper loss ratio(CLR), the stator copper loss ratio(SCLR), and the rotor copper loss ratio(RCLR) are defined and simulated in the whole slip range. The simulated results show that OPDF is maintained almost uniformly, LR is low at low speed and high at high speed, CLR is higher !ban NLLR, but CLR varies concavely and NLLR varies convexly at high speed, SCLR is low at low speed and high at high speed, but SCLR varies convexly at high speed, and RCLR is nearly opposite to SCLR.
This paper addresses the adaptive controller for efficiency optimization of induction motors. The paper describes an adaptive controller based on-line efficiency optimization control of a drive that uses a direct vector controlled induction motors. To improve the efficiency of the induction motors, it is important to find the optimal flux reference that minimize power loss. The proposed optimal flux reference is derived using a power loss function that is constructed with stator resistance losses, rotor resistance losses and core losses. The proposed sliding mode flux observer generates estimates the unmeasured rotor fluxes. An optimal efficiency controller has goal of maximizing the efficiency for a given speed and load torque. A simulation shows the effectiveness of the proposed technique.
In this paper, we measured and examined RTT delays and packet losses according to the changes of stationary loads for two typical stream-type traffics, a DV and a MPGE2 on the R&D Gigabit Network testbed, JGN. As the result of our actual measurements, we realized that the packet size of stationary load have no effects on a DV and a MPGE2 stream on the very high-speed network(50Mbps, IP over ATM). When its bandwidth and stationary load exceeds 95% of network bandwidth, packet losses appeared and RTT delay increased rapidly. Also we realized that the number and size of Receive & Transmit buffer on the end systems have no effects on packet losses and RTT delays.
An ultra-wideband microwave monolithic integrated circuit high-power amplifier with excellent input and output return losses for phased array jammer applications was designed and fabricated using commercial $0.25-{\mu}m$ AlGaN/GaN technology. To improve the wideband performance, resistive matching and a shunt feedback circuit are employed. The input and output return losses were improved through a balanced design using Lange-couplers. This three-stage amplifier can achieve an average saturated output power of 15 W, and power added efficiency of 10% to 28%, in a continuous wave operation over a frequency range of 6 GHz to 18 GHz. The input and output return losses were demonstrated to be lower than -15 dB over a wide frequency range.
This paper describes the electromagnetic and mechanical characteristics of coaxial magnetic gear (CMG) with a low gear ratio. The analysis models are restricted to a CMG with a gear ratio of less than 2. The electromagnetic characteristics including transmitted torque and iron losses are presented according to the variation of the gear ratio. The pole pairs of high speed rotor are chosen as 6, 8 and 10 by considering the torque capability. As the gear ratio approaches 1, both iron losses on the ferromagnetic materials and eddy current losses on the rotor permanent magnets are increased. The radial and tangential forces on the modulating pieces are calculated using the Maxwell stress tensor. When the maximum force is exerted on the modulating pieces, the mechanical characteristics including stress and deformation are derived by structural analysis. In CMG models with a low gear ratio, the maximum radial force acting on modulating pieces is larger than that in CMG models with a high gear ratio, and the normal stress and normal deformation are increased in a CMG with a low gear ratio. Therefore, modulating pieces should be designed to withstand larger radial forces in CMG with a low gear ratio compared to CMG with a high gear ratio.

AC loss is an important issue in the design of high-T$_{c}$ superconducting Power cables. The cables consists of a number of Bi-2223 tapes wound on a former. In such cables tapes have different critical current characteristics intrinsically. And they are electrically connected to each other and current leads by soldering. These make loss measurements considerably complex, especially for short samples of laboratory size. Special cautions are required in the positioning of voltage leads for measuring the true loss voltage. In this work the at losses in a single layer model cable have been experimentally investigated for different contacts and arrangements of voltage leads. The results show that the losses are not dependent on both arrangements and contact positions of the voltage leads. This implies that loss flux is only in a cylindrical conductor section. The measured losses also agree well with those based on a monoblock model and are independent of frequencies. This means that the measured AC loss of the model cable is purely hysteretic in nature.e.

AC loss is one of the important parameters in (High Temperature Superconducting)HTS AC devices. Among the HTS AC power devices, the transformer is the essential part in the electrical power system. But unfortunately, the transformer is the worst HTS device concerning AC loss because of very large magnetization loss due to high magnetic field applied to the HTS wire. We calculated the magnetization losses in HTS pancake windings for transformer according to the operating temperature. Two kinds of arrangement of HTS pancake windings were adopted for calculation of AC losses of a shell type transformer, and the analysis results were presented and discussed.
A novel carrier-based PWM (CBPWM) strategy of a three-level NPC converter is proposed in this paper. The novel strategy can eliminate the low-frequency neutral point (NP) voltage oscillation under the entire modulation index and full power factor. The basic principle of the novel strategy is introduced. The internal modulation wave relationship between the novel CBPWM strategy and traditional SPWM strategy is also studied. All 64 modulation wave solutions of the CBPWM strategy are derived. Furthermore, the proposed CBPWM strategy is compared with traditional SPWM strategy regarding the output phase voltage THD characteristics, DC voltage utilization ratio, and device switching losses. Comparison results show that the proposed strategy does not cause NP voltage oscillation. As a result, no low-frequency harmonics occur on output line-to-line voltage and phase current. The novel strategy also has higher DC voltage utilization ratio (15.47% higher than that of SPWM strategy), whereas it causes larger device switching losses (4/3 times of SPWM strategy). The effectiveness of the proposed modulation strategy is verified by simulation and experiment results.

A new soft switching technique that improves performance of the high power factor boost rectifier by reducing switching losses is introduced. The losses are reduced by air active snubber which consists of an inductor, a capacitor a rectifier, and an auxiliary switch. Since the boost switch turns off with zero current, this technique is well suited for implementations with insulated gate bipolar transistors. The reverse recovery related losses of the rectifier are also reduced by the snubber inductor which is connected in series with the boost switch and the boost rectifier. In addition, the auxiliary switch operates with zero voltage switching. A complete design procedure and extensive performance evaluation of the proposed active snubber using a 1.2[kW] high power factor boost rectifier operating from a 90 [$V_{rms}$] input are also presented.
