  • In this paper, linear ultrasonic actuators are designed using two dimensional motions of a PMW-PT piezoelectric plate. By equalizing the natural frequencies of longitudinal and transverse vibration modes in the cantilever structure, the ultrasonic motion of the combined vibration modes are generated. We have designed two different PMN-PT actuators: one uses a tip attached on the edge of the actuator and it drives the object in the perpendicular direction of the tip. In other model, the actuator plate moves itself through stationary guides. Prototypes of the two models are manufactured and experiments results are compared to the theoretical and numerical results. The effects of structural characteristics and the friction force existing between the actuator tip and the moving object are considered. Experiments show the possibility of small size ultrasonic linear motors which can be applicable to small form factor information storage and phone camera actuators.

  • The authors apply the transfer influence coefficient method to the 3. dimensional vibration analysis of beam with multi - joints and formulate a general algorithm to analyse the longitudinal, flexural and torsional coupled forced vibration. In this paper, a structure which is mainly found in the robot arms, cranes and so on, has some crooked parts, subsystems and joints, but has no closed loop in this system. It is modeled as the beam of a distributed mass system with massless translational, rotational and torsional springs in each node, and joint elements of release or roll at node which the displacement vector is discontinuous. The superiority of the present method to the transfer matrix method in the computation accuracy was confirmed from the numerical computation results. Moreover, we confirmed that boundary and intermediate conditions could be controlled by varying the values of the spring constants.

  • The definition of the radiation efficiency is very important to estimated underwater radiated noise of a ship. Considering the structure of the ship, it can be found that the hull of a ship consists of a lot of plates supporting by longitudinal and transverse stiffener. Therefore, various modes of the hull vibration occur related to the combination of these plates including stiffeners. In this paper, the method to define the radiation efficiency is suggested considering the vibration mode of the hull based on Uchida's experimental equation of the radiation efficiency. The suggested method is verified by the experiments with various kinds of naval vessels.

  • A vibration analysis for a rotating cantilever beam with the tapered cross section is presented in this study. The stiffness changes due to the stretching caused by centrifugal inertia forces when a tapered cantilever beam rotates about the axis perpendicular to its longitudinal axis. When the cross section of cantilever beam are assumed to decrease constantly, the mass and stiffness also change according to the variation of the thickness and width ratio of a tapered cantilever beam. Such phenomena result in variations of natural frequencies and mode shapes. Therefore it is important to the equations of motion in order to be obtained accurate predictions of these variations. The equations of motion of a rotating tapered cantilever beam are derived by using hybrid deformation variable modeling method and numerical results are obtained along with the angular velocity and the thickness and width ratio.

  • The possibility of noncontact excitation of vibrations in a shaft was investigated in order to enable online structural health monitoring of a shaft during its rotating condition without stop operation. The proposed noncontact exciter was devised to exclusively generate one of two shaft vibration modes, so called longitudinal and flexural. Using the prototypes and a lot of experiments on them, it was proven that bias magnetic field, exciting voltage, center frequency, and geometry of yokes have crucial impacts on its output characteristics.

  • The longitudinal and lateral in-plane vibrations of an axially moving membrane are investigated when the membrane has translating acceleration. By extended Hamilton's principle, the governing equations are derived. The equations of motion for the in-plane vibrations are linear and coupled. These equations are discretized by using the Galerkin approximation method after they are transformed into the variational equations, j.e., the weak forms so that the admissible functions can be used for the bases of the in-plane deflections. With the discretized equations for the in-plane vibrations, the natural frequencies and the time histories of the deflections are obtained.

  • The vibration of a running railway vehicle can be classified on lateral, longitudinal and vertical motions. The important factor on the stability and ride quality of a railway vehicle is the lateral motion. The contact between wheel and rail with conicity influences strongly on the lateral motion. In this study, an experiment for the vibration of a running railway vehicle was performed using a of the scale model of a railway vehicle. Also, the effects on the car-body, bogie and wheelset were examined for the weight and the stiffness of the second suspension system. The experimental results showed that the lateral vibration increases as the wheel conicity and stiffness of the second suspension system increase. And the lateral vibration of the bogie increases as the mass ratio between car-body and bogie increases. Also, the lateral vibration of the wheel becomes high at low speed, while the wheel of 1/20 conicity makes severe vibration at high speed running.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the vibration reduction effect of the borehole which is controlled the vibration propagation in the ground. For this study, we measured the vibration velocity before and after the borehole installation. The results are as follows: The peak particle velocity(PPV) and peak vector sum(PVS) was reduced by the borehole. And also, the deviation of vibration velocity before and after the borehole installation showed large values in longitudinal and vertical component depending on the receive distance, and increased depending on the size of vibration energy. Finally, the vibration isolation efficiency was 25~35 percentage at 1.5m receive distance, and was 4~14 percentage at 3.0m receive distance. It was found that the vibration isolation efficiency was good in small vibration energy, but was not good at long receive distance.

  • This paper develops a spectral element model for the composite beams with a surface-bonded piezoelectric layer from the governing equations of motion. The governing equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle by applying the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory for the bending vibration and the elementary rod theory for the longitudinal vibration of the composite beams. For the PZT layer, the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory and linear piezoelectricity theory are applied. The high accuracy of the present spectral element model is evaluated through the numerical examples by comparing with the finite element analysis results.
