  • Compressive flanges of steel box girder is designed based on the ultimate strength behavior of sub-panel which is enclosed with longitudinal stiffeners and transverse stiffeners on appropriate safety factor. However, it is rational that the ultimate strength is calculated considering the various factors such as number and stiffness of longitudinal stiffener, spacing of transverse stiffener, initial deformation and residual stress distribution. In this study, an analysis program based on Folded Plate theory is developed considering the geometric effects and the material nonlinearity. The analysis program is applicated to the steel box girder bridges which is really constructed in domestic.

  • Ultimate axial strength of longitudinally stiffened cylindrical steel shells for wind turbine tower was investigated by applying the geometrically and materially nonlinear finite element method. The effects of radius to thickness ratio of shell, shape and amplitude of initial imperfections, area ratio between effective shell and stiffener, and stiffener spacing on the ultimate axial strength of cylindrical shells were analyzed. The ultimate axial strengths of stiffened cylindrical shells by FEA were compared with design buckling strengths specified in DNV-RP-C202. The shell buckling modes obtained from a linear elastic bifurcation FE analysis as well as the weld depression during fabrication specified in Eurocode 3 were introduced in the nonlinear FE analysis as initial geometric imperfections. The radius to thickness ratio of cylindrical shell models was selected to be in the range of 50 to 200. The longitudinal stiffeners were designed according to DNV-RP-C202 to prevent the lateral torsional buckling and local buckling of stiffeners.

  • The paper investigates the dynamic behaviour of stiffened panels. The coupled differential equations for eccentric stiffening configuration are first derived. Then a semi-analytical procedure for dynamic analysis of stiffened panels is presented. Unlike finite element or finite strip methods, where the plate is discretized into a set of elements or strips, the plate in this procedure is treated as a single element. The potential energy of the structure is first expressed in terms generalized functions that describe the longitudinal and transverse displacement profiles. The resulting non-linear strain energy functions are then transformed into unconstrained optimization problem in which mathematical programming techniques are employed to determine the magnitude of the lowest natural frequency and the associated mode shape for pre-selected plate/stiffener geometric parameters. The described procedure is verified with other numerical methods for several stiffened panels. Results are then presented showing the variation of the natural frequency with plate/stiffener geometric parameters for various stiffening configurations.

  • This paper investigates the safety of the wind turbine blade against excessive deformation. For this purpose, the performance of the blade in the along-wind direction is improved by longitudinal stiffener made of shape memory alloy. The rationale behind the selection of this smart material is due to its ability to offer excellent thermo-mechanical behaviour at low strain. Here, Liang-Roger model is adopted for vibration control, and the super-elastic effects are utilised for blade stiffening. Turbulent wind fields are generated at the hub height using TurbSim and the corresponding loads are evaluated using blade element momentum theory. An efficient switching algorithm is developed along with performance curves that enable the designer to select an optimal mode of heating depending upon the operational scenario. Numerical results presented in this paper clearly demonstrate the performance envelope of the proposed stiffener and its influence on the reliability of the blade.

  • The lifting and lowering supports method was recently developed in steel box girder bridge. It has many advantages by lifting and lowering of inner supports and filled concrete. This method reduces an amount of steel and height of girders. It is one of the methods used to effectively increase the use of structural material. However, if there is too much lifting of inner supports, it is possible to cause buckling of the compression flange or web panel. Therefore it needs a proper number of longitudinal and transvers stiffener.

  • In this paper, a series of experiments for the evaluation of flexural resistance of longitudinally stiffened plate girder with slender web were conducted. For the purpose, four plate girder specimens with and without longitudinal stiffener were fabricated for the web slenderness of 219 and 156. The test results were compared with the current AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode 3 codes, respectively. As presented in the previous paper by the authors, it was acknowledged that the AASHTO LRFD code could considerably underestimate the flexural resistance of longitudinally stiffened girder with slender web and the proposed method in the previous paper could estimate the flexural resistance reasonably.

  • Manhole cover, which is usually made of grey cast iron and consists of frame and cover, should have enough strength to support the heavy traffic load. The manhole cover made of cast iron has heavy weight to handle manually and is vulnerable to impact force with its brittle characteristics. Moreover, its production process of casting has been regulated in terms of environmental pollution. In this study, steel manhole cover is proposed to substitute the cast cover with a series of structural analyses to confirm its strength to support the test load for manhole cover. The cover of the proposed steel manhole cover is made of thin circular pate and stiffeners below the plate. Rectangular columns and hollow circular plate were selected for the shape of the stiffener. In order to give enough strength for the cover to behave within elastic range in the loading, strengthening structures of the cover were varied with increasing the number and the size of the stiffeners. The results of the analyses revealed that when both the hollow circular stiffener and cross stiffeners were additionally applied at the same time to the steel cover with longitudinal stiffeners, the maximum stress level in the cover could be reduced to that level presented in the cast cover.

  • The thin web panels of plate girders often need to be reinforced with transverse stiffeners to increase the shear strength. Since early 1960s, extensive researches have been conducted on the ultimate shear strength of plate girder webs with transverse stiffeners. These results have been first adopted into AASHTO(1970) and British Standard(1983) Specifications for the determination of the ultimate shear strength of transversely stiffened web panels. Although the main purposes of reinforcing web panels with longitudinal stiffeners are to increase the buckling strength and to control the lateral deflections due to bending, it has been reported that the longitudinal stiffeners increase the shear strength. However lack of studies has kept the effects of the longitudinal stiffeners on the ultimate shear strength from the design of plate girder web panels. In the present study an experimental investigation is carried out in order to assess the increment of the ultimate shear strength of shear web panels due to the longitudinal stiffeners and the results are compared with the existing failure theories.

  • Steel girders are the structural members often used for passing long spans. Mostly being subjected to patch loading, or concentrated loading, steel girders are likely to face sudden deformation or damage e.g., web breathing. Horizontal or vertical stiffeners are employed to overcome this phenomenon. This study aims at assessing the feasibility of a machine learning method, namely the support vector machines (SVM) in predicting the patch loading resistance of longitudinally stiffened webs. A database consisting of 162 test data is utilized to develop SVM models and the model with best performance is selected for further inspection. Existing formulations proposed by other researchers are also investigated for comparison. BS5400 and other existing models (model I, model II and model III) appear to yield underestimated predictions with a large scatter; i.e., mean experimental-to-predicted ratios of 1.517, 1.092, 1.155 and 1.256, respectively; whereas the selected SVM model has high prediction accuracy with significantly less scatter. Robust nature and accurate predictions of SVM confirms its feasibility of potential use in solving complex engineering problems.

  • The definition of the radiation efficiency is very important to estimated underwater radiated noise of a ship. Considering the structure of the ship, it can be found that the hull of a ship consists of a lot of plates supporting by longitudinal and transverse stiffener. Therefore, various modes of the hull vibration occur related to the combination of these plates including stiffeners. In this paper, the method to define the radiation efficiency is suggested considering the vibration mode of the hull based on Uchida's experimental equation of the radiation efficiency. The suggested method is verified by the experiments with various kinds of naval vessels.
