Purpose: The aim of this study was to report the improvement of Guillain-Barre syndrome after long-term combination treatment with Korean medicine. Methods: A patient was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome and treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, moxibustion, and exercise, including quadruped walking after three hospital admissions. To evaluate muscle strength and weakness, we measured manual muscle function, gait pattern, and the speed of quadruped walking. Results: The patient's muscle weakness in the extremities and gait stance were improved. The speed of quadruped walking was increased. Conclusion: We consider that combined treatment with Korean medicine might be effective for the muscle weakness of Guillain-Barre syndrome with a poor prognostic factor. To verify the effectiveness of this treatment, further research is needed.
Osteoporosis is a disease that increases the risk of fractures by inducing a decrease in bone strength by the changes in hormones and a decrease in minerals. Recent reports have indicated that the long-term administration of Adefovir dipivoxil (ADV), which is used as a treatment for the hepatitis virus and AIDS, may have osteoporotic side effects. On the other hand, there are few studies on the cytopathic correlation of these causes. In this study, the biological relevance of ADV was evaluated using osteoblast hFOB1.19 and vascular endothelial cell HUVEC. First, the cells were treated with ADV at different concentrations, and DAPI and crystal violet staining were performed for morphological analysis of each cell and nucleus. A CCK-8 assay, real-time PCR, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining, and activity was performed to evaluate the drug effects on cell proliferation, gene expression, and osteoblast differentiation. As a result, ADV induced cell hypertrophy in hFOB1.19 cells and HUVEC cells. Furthermore, ADV not only inhibited cell proliferation and TGF-${\beta}$ expression but was also involved in osteoblast differentiation. Overall, these results provide basic data to help better understand the mechanism of ADV-induced osteoporosis and its clinical implications.

When concrete member become large like in high rise buildings, hydration heat makes temperature difference inside and outside and cause cracks. The method of using latent heat material as heat reducer could be more accessible, usable and efficient than other methods. Therefore, many studies using PCM as heat reducer are being conducted. Since heat reducer have different reacting temperature, they may be affected by environmental factors like ambient and concrete mixing temperature but studies issuing this are insignificant. Therefore, this paper attempt to evaluate the hydration heat characteristics and quality of concrete using strontium-based PCM under hot weather conditions. As a result, when the strontium-based hydration heat reducer was mixed 3wt.% and 5wt.% in hot weather condition, hydration heat speed and heating rate could be reduced by 8%, 21%, and 75, 85 minutes compared to OPC, respectively. This is considered to be the phase change reaction is relatively promoted when the temperature is high and cause improve performance than room condition result. Later, comparing the efficiency of other types of P.C.M in hot weather condition, and conduct detailed reviews on the strength development in long-term age.

In this study, the performance of a honeycomb-type hydrogen oxidation catalyst to remove hydrogen in a hydrogen economy society to secure leaking hydrogen. The Pd/TiO2 catalyst was prepared based on a liquid phase reduction method that is not exposed to a heat source, and it was showed through H2-chemisorption analysis that it existed as very small active particles of 2~4 nm. In addition, it was found that the metal dispersion decreased and the active particle size increased as the reduction reaction temperature increased. It was meant that the active metal particle size and the hydrogen oxidation performance were in a proportional correlation, so that it was consistent with the hydrogen oxidation performance reduction result. The prepared catalyst was coated on a support in the form of a honeycomb so that it could be applied to the hydrogen industrial process. When 20 wt% or more of the AS-40 binder was coated, oxidation performance of 90% or more was observed under low-concentration hydrogen conditions. It was showed through SEM analysis that long-term catalytic activity can be expected by enhancing the adhesion strength of the catalyst and preventing catalyst desorption. It is a basic research that can secure safety in a hydrogen society such as gasification, organic resource, and it can be utilized as a system that can respond to unexpected safety accidents in the future.

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is commonly used as control or vehicle solvent in preclinical research of neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) due to its ability to dissolve lipophilic compounds and cross the blood brain barrier. However, the biochemical effects of DMSO on the outcomes of preclinical research are often overlooked. In the present study, we investigated whether the long-term oral administration of 5% DMSO affects the neurological, functional, and histological disease phenotype of the copper/zinc superoxide dismutase glycine 93 to alanine mutation (SOD1-G93A) mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. SOD1-G93A transgenic mice showed shortened survival time and reduced motor function. We found that administration with DMSO led to increased mean survival time, reduced neurological scores, and improved motor performance tested using the rotarod and grip strength tests. On the other hand, DMSO treatment did not attenuate motor neuron loss in the spinal cord and denervation of neuromuscular junctions in the skeletal muscle. These results suggest that DMSO administration could improve the quality of life of the SOD1-G93A mouse model of ALS without affecting motor neuron denervation. In conclusion, the use of DMSO as control or vehicle solvent in preclinical research may affect the behavioral outcomes in the SOD1-G93A mouse model. The effect of the vehicle should be thoroughly considered when interpreting therapeutic efficacy of candidate drugs in preclinical research.

The slope of an open cut tunnel is located above the exit of the Leijia tunnel on the Changgan high-speed railway. During the excavation of the open cut tunnel foundation pit, the slope slipped twice, a large landslide of 92500 m3 formed. The landslide body and unstable slope body not only caused the foundation pit of the open cut tunnel to be buried and the anchor piles to be damaged but also directly threatened the operational safety of the later high-speed railway. Therefore, to study the stability change in the slope of the open cut tunnel under heavy rain and excavation conditions, a 3D numerical calculation model of the slope is carried out by Midas GTS software, the deformation mechanism is analyzed, anti-sliding measures are proposed, and the effectiveness of the anti-sliding measures is analyzed according to the field monitoring results. The results show that when rainfall occurs, rainwater collects in the open cut tunnel area, resulting in a transient saturation zone on the slope on the right side of the open cut tunnel, which reduces the shear strength of the slope soil; the excavation at the slope toe reduces the anti-sliding capacity of the slope toe. Under the combined action of excavation and rainfall, when the soil above the top of the anchor pile is excavated, two potential sliding surfaces are bounded by the top of the excavation area, and the shear outlet is located at the top of the anchor pile. After the excavation of the open cut tunnel, the potential sliding surface is mainly concentrated at the lower part of the downhill area, and the shear outlet moves down to the bottom of the open cut tunnel. Based on the deformation characteristics and the failure mechanism of the landslides, comprehensive control measures, including interim emergency mitigation measures and long-term mitigation measures, are proposed. The field monitoring results further verify the accuracy of the anti-sliding mechanism analysis and the effectiveness of anti-sliding measures.
Deep foundations have been popularly installed in hard stratum such as gravels or rocks in Korea. However, it is necessary to consider sand or sandy gravel layers that locate at the mid-depths as the bearing stratum of piles in the thick Nakdong River deltaic deposits, as done in the Chaophraya (Bangkok) and Mississippi River deltas. This study was focused on the finding of suitable methods for estimating bearing capacity when driving prestressed high-strength concrete (PHC) piles to a required depth in the deltaic area. Ground investigation was performed at five locations of two sites in the deltaic area. Bearing capacity of the driven piles has been computed using a number of proposed methods such as CPT-based and other analytical methods, based on the ground investigation and comparison one another other. Five PDA (pile driving analyzer) tests were systematically carried out at the whole depths of embedded piles, which is a well-blown useful technique for the purposes. As the results, the bearing capacities calculated by various methods were compared with the PDA and static load testing results. It was found that the shaft resistance is significantly governed by set-up effects and then the long-term value agrees well with that of the $\beta$ method. Also, the design methods for toe resistance were determined based on the SLT result, rather than PDA results that led to underestimation. Moreover, using the CPT results, appropriate methods were proposed for calculating the bearing capacity of the piles in the area.

Moisture damage of asphalt pavements can usually occur because of the loss of adhesion and cohesion between the asphalt binder and aggregate in the asphalt mixture due to presence of water. And this is one of the causes that is effect on the main distress of asphalt pavement. The objective of this study is to find out moisture damage characteristics of asphalt pavement. Effects of this study changes of the material properties and resistance characteristics of moisture damage on the asphalt mixtures under various temperatures and repeated immersion using indirect tensile test and modify Lottman test were evaluated during this study. The asphalt mixtures were produced using straight asphalt binder, SBS modified asphalt binder and aggregates. The material properties (resilient modulus, indirect tensile strength, failure energy and $DCSE_f$) of the asphalt mixtures were generally decreased with increasing to moisture damage caused by the number of repeated immersion. The decrease ratios of material properties by repeated immersion on SBS modified asphalt mixtures were lower than those of straight asphalt mixtures at all three test temperatures. As a conclusion, current criterion for evaluation moisture damage of asphalt mixtures is difficult for using distinction standard because of the limited evaluation criterion with one time immersion and single material property. Based on this research, to evaluate long term moisture damage on asphalt mixtures, material property tests of various kinds with repeated immersion test are considered.

In this study, the mechanical performance of concrete exposed to chloride ion penetration was investigated. And a compressive stress-strain model was presented. CaCl2 solution was added when mixing concrete to simulate long-term chloride ion penetration, and the concentration of chlorine ions was set to 0, 1, 2, and 4 % based on the weight of the binder. To investigate the compressive stress-strain curve after the peak stress of concrete, the compressive strength was measured by displacement control. When the chlorine ion concentration was 1 %, peak stress increased, but when the chlorine ion concentration was 2 % or more, peak stress decreased. In the case of peak strain, no trend according to chloride ion concentration was observed at 7 days. At 28 days, peak strain decreased as the chloride ion concentration increased. A compressive stress-strain curve model based on the Popovics model was presented using changes in peak stress and peak strain at 28 days. Microstructure analyses were performed to investigate the cause of the decrease in mechanical performance as the concentration of chlorine ions increased. It was confirmed that as the concentration of chlorine ion increased, Friedel's salt increased and portlandite decreased.

Objectives: This study sought to assess the effectiveness of community-based nutrition counseling on improving nutritional status, managing complex chronic diseases, and enhancing the quality of life for elderly individuals with chronic conditions, particularly in older adults with high levels of food insecurity and multiple chronic illnesses. Methods: Thirty elderly subjects with diabetes and hypertension who were registered at local Senior Welfare Center received individualized nutrition counseling, based on their Nutrition Quotient for the Elderly (NQ-E) index. Over a 16-week period, they received tailored counseling and underwent various health and nutritional assessments. The final analysis included 28 participants after two dropped out. Data analysis was conducted using the SPSS v28.0. Results: The subjects were over 70, with multiple chronic diseases including diabetes and hypertension and predominantly female. After 16 weeks, significant improvements were observed in the subjects' grip strength, and HbA1c levels, as well as in their NQ-E scores, indicating improved dietary balance and diversity. There were no significant improvements in the 'Moderation' subdomain of the NQ-E index, suggesting that this aspect requires further attention in nutritional counseling. The subjects' nutritional risk scores (NSI) were also significantly decreased, indicating less nutritional risk. Lastly, as measured by the SF-36K, the subjects' quality of life showed significant improvement in several domains including physical role performance and social function. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that tailored nutrition counseling, based on the NQ-E index, can improve elderly health, manage chronic diseases, and enhance quality of life. This approach potentially broadens the scope of community nutritionists' roles within an aging society. However, additional research is necessary to evaluate these interventions' long-term effects and sustainability.
