  • To develop the potential use as new host strain for gene cloning, alkaline-tolerant isolates from soil were examined for amylase activity, protease activity, antimicrobial activity and transformability by using plasmid pUB 110. Of these strains, one was selected and identified as Bacillus sp. YA-14. in the enzymatic properties of Bacillus sp. YA-14 the optimal conditions for the reaction of amylase and protease were at pH 0.8 and pH 7.5 respectively. The antimicrobial activity of Bacillus sp. YA-14 was also found. For the transformation, Bacillus sp. YA-14 was cultured to late logarithmic growth phase ai 37$^{\circ}C$ in modified SPI medium (pH 8.0) containing 0.4% MgSO$_4$. The presence of pUB 110 plasmid DNA in transformants was confirmed by electrophoresis and stably maintained in the new host.

  • Background: To improve muscle flexibility, static stretch is the most common type and is considered safe and effective for improving overall flexibility of muscles. During the stretch, the intensity is more likely to be determined by the degree of an athlete's pain and practitioner's skills rather than quantitative measures of stretch. It is necessary to determine the optimal intensity for the stretch. Objects: The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between hand held dynamometer (HHD) and verbal rating scale (VRS) in comparison of the effects of continuance time on active (walking) and inactive (sitting) movement after static stretch. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample (n=62) recruited from a university. Participants were randomly assigned to 2 different groups (n=31 for each group) based on participants' positions either remaining in sitting or freely walking around for a series of re-assessments. Data was collected at pre-warm up, pre-stretch, post-stretch, and additional assessments at the time of 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 20 and 30 minutes after the stretch. Results: Relationship between VRS and HHD scores represents very weak correlation (Spearman's p=-.16, p>.05). Pearson's correlation analysis was conducted following the logarithmic transformation of the two scores. Pearson's correlation after the transformation still showed a very low relationship and a poor linear relationship between the two scores (Pearson's r=-.18, p>.05). Conclusion: The optimal intensity for stretch cannot be solely determined by the subjective pain perception. The objective measurement such as HHD could be used in conjunction with the pain perception.

  • Forecasts of the monthly catches of anchovy in Korea were carried out by the seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model and spectral analysis. The seasonal ARIMA model is as follows: $$(1-0.431B)(1-B^{12})Z_t=(1-0.882B^{12})e_t$$ where: $Z_t=value$ at month $t;\;B^{p}$ is a backward shift operator, that is, $B^pZ_t=Z_{t-p};$ and $e_t=error$ term at month t, which is to forecast 24 months ahead the anchovy catches in Korea. The prediction error by the Box-Cox transformation on monthly anchovy catches in Korea was less than that by the logarithmic transformation. The equation of the Box-Cox transformation was $Y'=(Y^{0.58}-1)/0.58$. Forecasts of the monthly anchovy catches for $1991\~1992$, which were compared with the actual catches, had an absolute percentage error (APE) range of $1.0\~63.2\%$. Total observed annual catches in 1991 and 1992 were 170,293 M/T and 168,234 M/T respectively, while the predicted catches were 148,201 M/T and 148,834 M/T $(API\;13.0\%\;and\;11.5\%,\;respectively)$. The spectrum analysis of the monthly catches of anchovy showed some dominant fluctuations in the periods of 2.2, 6.1, 10.2 12.0 and 14.7 months. The spectrum analysis was also useful for selecting the ARIMA model.

  • Total suspended particulate matters in the ambient air were analyzed for eight chemical elements (Ca, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Si, and Zn) using an x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) at the Kyung Hee University - Suwon Campus during 1989 to 1994. To use these data as basis for source identification study, membership of each sample was selected to represent one of the well defined sample groups. The data sets consisting of 83 objects and 8 variables were initially separated into two groups, fine (d$_{p}$<3.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and coarse particle groups (d$_{p}$>3.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). A hierarchical clustering method was examined to obtain possible member of homogeneous sample classes for each of the two groups by transforming raw data and by applying various distances. A disjoint principal component analysis was then used to define homogeneous sample classes after deleting outliers. Each of five homogeneous sample classes was determined for the fine and the coarse particle group, respectively. The data were properly classified via an application of logarithmic transformation and Euclidean distance concept. After determining homogeneous classes, correlation coefficients among eight chemical variables within all the homogeneous classes for calculated and meteorological variables (temperature. relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and precipitation) were examined as well to intensively interpret environmental factors influencing the characteristics of each class for each group. According to our analysis, we found that each class had its own distinct seasonal pattern that was affected most sensitively by wind direction.ion.

  • This paper proposes the wafer position recognition algorithm using camera. First, for eliminating the image distortions caused by the illumination and the irregular camera position, the wafer image is restored as a circle through projective transformation. Next, we use edge detection algorithm to extract the wafer's edge and then apply Generalized Symmetry Transform(GST) to extract a circle. The GST evaluates symmetry between two points by combining a distance weight function, a phase weight function, and a logarithmic mapping of the points' intensities and detecting interest regions. Trough several experiments, we found out the proposed method is able to prevent the cleaning system and the wafer from damaging.

  • Electric discharge machining drill (EDM-drill) is an efficient process for the fabrication of micro-diameter deep metal hole. As there is non-physical contact between tool (electrode) and workpiece, EDM-drill is widely used to machine the hard machining materials such as high strength steel, cemented carbide, titanium alloys. The electro-thermal energy forces the electrode to wear out together with the workpiece to be machined. The electrode wear occurs inside of a machining hole. and It causes hard to monitor the machining state, which leads the productivity and the quality to decrease. Thus, this study presents a methodology to estimated the electrode wear amount while two coefficients (scale factor and shape factor) of the logarithmic regression model are evaluated from the experiment result. To increase the accuracy of estimation model, the linear transformation method is adopted using the differences of initial electrode wear differences. The estimation model is verified through experiment. The experimental result shows that within minute error, the estimation model is able to predict accurately.

  • The duration of spatial memory in cattle is potentially important for grazing management. The ability of livestock to remember the location of food patches may lead to uneven range use. In this experiment, how long cattle are able to remember food locations was determined. Six steers were used to conduct this study in a pasture with an 8 row by 8 column grid of 64 plastic containers 5 meters apart. Four randomly chosen containers were loaded with feed pellets. All steers were trained to find the loaded locations until a minimum of empty containers were visited. After this initial training, each steer was tested at 5, 10, 20 and 48 days post-training. Total number of visits (TV), number of containers visited (NC), the ratio of loaded containers (LC) to NC were recorded. Once the steers learned the locations of loaded containers NC did not increase with time since last training up to 48 days (p>0.05). Logarithmic transformation of NC (LNC) was 0.70 and 0.80 for the control and 48 day treatments, respectively. Steers were equally efficient in locating containers with feed. The steers also showed that their ability in locating food was much better than expected by chance (Z>1.62). Findings of the present study do not suggest using spatial memory decay as a tool to promote better grazing distribution. Because steers remembered food locations accurately for at least 48 days.

  • The purpose of this research is to enhance efficiency and tide measurement of the bathymetry survey based on the DGPS techniques which is becoming popular today due to a lot of benefits using the GPS. And according to the result of this research, choice and interpolation were possible with the most optimum method according to the various mathematical regressive equations as linear, parabolic, polynomic, reciprocal, hyperbolic, logarithmic and Gaussian functions. And the height of ground surface is easily calculated by 2D+1D transformation of coordinate of WGS84 in Cm-level based on the real time, even though the GPS time and tide were used to be synchronized through step-wised processing before. And because of the synchronization of time, the real time DGPS can cope with the loss of local current and changes of the tide.

  • The parameters in the multiplicative model $Y_{1}={\alpha}_{0}{\prod}^{p}_{k=1}X_{kj}^{{\beta}_K}v_{j}$ are usually estimated by the least squares method after logarithmic transformation, and the least square Estimator of ${\alpha}_{0}$ is known to be biased, i.e., $E(e xp(\hat{\beta}_{0})){\neq}{\alpha}_{0})$. In the present study the unbaised estimators of ${\alpha}_{0}$ are examined(1) by modifying the least squares estimator and (2) by applying the Finney's results. The variances are also compared. In addition it has been observed that multiplicative model can be used to express the relationship beetween rice yield and yield components.

  • The experiment was conducted with three varieties (Hicks, Burley 21, and Sohyang) and cultivation type (Improved mulching, general mulching, and non mulching) of NC 2326 to model to curve of tabacco growth against time. The basic growth data were obtained by harvest method at intervals of ten days from transplanting at 7-8 times and analyzed by polynomial regression, orthogonal polynomial, and logarithmic transformation. It is shown that the C model of growth curve: T = A +$\sqrt{(1.4 AK + K)}$2K provides an excellent fit.
