  • In this paper, we give a solving approach based on a logarithmic-exponential multiplier penalty function for the constrained minimization problem. It is proved exact in the sense that the local optimizers of a nonlinear problem are precisely the local optimizers of the logarithmic-exponential multiplier penalty problem.

  • In this paper, we construct an logarithmic spiral-like curve using curvature-continuous quadratic spline and quadratic rational spline. The quadratic (rational) spline has self-similarity. We present some properties of the quadratic spline. Also using this $G^2$ quadratic spline, an approximation of logarithmic spiral is proposed and error analysis is obtained.

  • In this paper, we investigate the viscoelastic plate equation with a constant delay term and logarithmic nonlinearities. Under some conditions, we will prove the global existence. Furthermore, we use weighted spaces to establish a general decay rate of solution.

  • The logarithmic form for turbulent flow analysis guarantees the positivity of the turbulence variables as ${\kappa}$ and ${\varepsilon}$ of the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model by using the natural logarithm of these variables. In the present study, the logarithmic form is incorporated into the finite element solution procedure for the unsteady turbulent flow analysis. A backward facing step flow using the standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model and a flow around a 2D square cylinder using the modified ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model (the Kato-Launder model) are simulated. These results show that the logarithmic form effectively keeps adequate balance of turbulence variables and makes the analysis stable during transient or unsteady processes.

  • For the screening of gamma-irradiated grains, domestic rice, glutinous rice, barley, and wheat were irradiated with 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 kGy and screened using the DEFT/APC (Direct Epifluorescent Filter Technique/Aerobic Plate Count) method. The log DEFT/APT units increased with the dose increment in all samples, whereas the log APC unit decreased gradually. For rice, barley, and wheat, unirradiated and irradiated samples with below 0.3 kGy had 2.0 or lower logarithmic units, whereas those with 0.5 kGy or higher had 2.0 or higher logarithmic units. For glutinous rice, the sample irradiated with 0.5 kGy showed 1.92 logarithmic unit and those with 0.7 kGy or higher had 2.0 or higher logarithmic units. These results suggest that if the grains show 2.0 or higher logarithmic units, they could be assumed to have been irradiated at a dose level of at least 0.5 kGy. In conclusion, grains could be easily screened through the DEFT/APC method.

  • The logarithmic objective function used in waveform inversion minimizes the logarithmic differences between the observed and modeled data. Laplace-domain waveform inversions usually adopt the logarithmic objective function and the diagonal elements of the pseudo-Hessian for optimization. In this case, we apply the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm to prevent the diagonal elements of the pseudo-Hessian from being zero or near-zero values. In this study, we analyzed the diagonal elements of the pseudo-Hessian of the logarithmic objective function and showed that there is no zero or near-zero value in the diagonal elements of the pseudo-Hessian for acoustic waveform inversion in the Laplace domain. Accordingly, we do not need to apply the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm when we regularize the gradient direction using the pseudo-Hessian of the logarithmic objective function. Numerical examples using synthetic and field datasets demonstrate that we can obtain inversion results without applying the Levenberg-Marquardt method.

  • During low-pressure membrane treatments of cyanobacterial cells, including microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF), there have reportedly been releases of intracellular compounds including cyanotoxins and compounds with an earthy-musty odor into the water, probably owing to cyanobacterial cell breakage retained on the membrane. However, to our knowledge, no information was reported regarding the effect of growth phase of cyanobacterial cells on the release of the intracellular compounds. In the present study, we used a geosmin-producing cyanobacterium, Anabaena smithii, to investigate the effect of the growth phase of the cyanobacterium on the release of intracellular geosmin during laboratory-scale MF experiments with the cells in either the logarithmic growth or stationary phase. Separate detection of damaged and intact cells revealed that the extent of cell breakage on the MF membrane was almost the same for logarithmic growth and stationary phase cells. However, whereas the geosmin concentration in the MF permeate increased after 3 h of filtration with cells in the logarithmic growth phase, it did not increase during filtration with cells in the stationary phase: the trend in the geosmin concentration in the MF permeate with time was much different between the logarithmic growth and stationary phases. Adsorption of geosmin to algogenic organic matter (AOM) retained on the MF membrane and/or pore blocking with the AOM were greater when the cells were in the stationary phase versus the logarithmic growth phase, the result being a decrease in the apparent release of intracellular geosmin from the stationary phase cells. In actual drinking water treatment plants employing membrane processes, more attention should be paid to the cyanobacterial cells in logarithmic growth phase than in stationary phase from a viewpoint of preventing the leakage of intracellular earthy-musty odor compounds to finished water.

Auther, for the first time, suggest the apparent logarithmic hardness against the penetration of ointment registered on the pharmacopeia of the Republic of Korea, the results are as the followings. 1. The speciality of this apparent logarithmic hardness ie in proportion for the solidity on the contrary to the penetration of oiniment, and the distribution range of it are between 1.68 to 3.53 for their ointments examined. 2. The specific gravity of the verious ointments according to the apparent logarithmic hardness may be ignore on the calculaiotn, the mean valve of the samples was 2.9303. 3. The determination of apparent logarithmic hardness(H) by the penetration method follows the under equation. $H=log_{10}({\frac{P-0.545h^3}{0.855h^2}})$ where, the h is the penetrate length described centimeter, and p is the weight of the cone.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the way of teaching and learning logarithm in high school mathematics and provide practical suggestions for teaching logarithms. For such purpose, it reviewed John Napier's life and his ideas, the effect of logarithms on seventeenth century science, and a logarithmic scale and its methods of calculation. With this reviews, introduction of logarithms with function concept, logarithmic calculation with common logarithms, and the formula of converting to other logarithmic bases were reviewed for finding a new perspective of teaching and learning logarithms in high school mathematics. Through such historical and pedagogical reviews, this paper presented practical suggestions and comments about the way of teaching and learning logarithms in high school mathematics.
