  • This paper presents a local obstacle avoidance method for indoor mobile robots using Lane method and velocity Space Command approach. The method locates local obstacles using the information form multi-sensors, such that ultrasonic sensor array and laser scanning sensor. The method uses lane method to determine optimum collision-free heading direction of a robot. Also, it deals with the robot motion dynamics problem to reduce some vibration and guarantee fast movement as well. It yields translational and rotational velocities required to avoid the detected obstacles and to keep the robot heading direction toward goal location as close as possible. For experimental verification of the method, a mobile robot driven by two AC servo motors, equipped with 24 ultrasonic sensor array and laser scanning sensor navigates using the method through a corridor cluttered with obstacle.

  • As consumer electronics, information, and aero-space industry grow, the demand for aspheric lens increases higher. To enhance the precision and productivity of aspheric surface, a CAM system for ultra-precision aspheric surface needs to be realized. In this study, the developed CAM system can generate NC code for various aspheric surfaces fast and precisely by Tri-arc interpolation method that the location of maximum error is fixed. The cutting condition input module and the NC code verification module are adequate to ultra-precision machining, so that a operator can obtain products fast and easily.

  • The acoustic intensity in the very near field of a vibrating surface reveals information about the location of sound sources and sinks. A system model of tennis racket was developed from simultaneous measurement of excitation force, surface vibration and the near field sound pressure. The characteristics of structural dynamics were obtained by standard experimental modal analysis techniques while the sound radiation characteristics were determined by estimating the acoustic intensity. In this paper, the information about vibration behviour was obtained by acoustic intensity method and some, experiments for verification were carried out. Close correlation was found between experimentally determined acoustic intensity and vibration mode patterns of the tennis racket.

  • A computer simulation model for investigating a two-dimensional (2-D) rounding mechanism in a centerless grinding process is described. This model includes the interference phenomena and the concept of machining elasticity. Since initial contact points are used as a reference, the result of this simulation is not affected by the location of the reference circle center and the radius of the reference circle. Also, details of the machining factor are studied by using process variables (grinding wheel speed, wheel specification, workpiece speed, dressing condition, etc.). The effect of the threshold grinding force on the size of ground workpiece is investigated. For the verification of this method, simulation results are compared with the experimental work.

  • A model trains must have similitude with its original model not only in shape but also in motion. Motion characteristics of a model train under considerations are maximum velocity in straight and circular tracks and stopping distance. Equations of motions are derived to obtain maximum speed and stopping distance based on the Newton's Second Law and the energy principal. To accurately predict traction and resistance force between wheel and rail. wheel slip, or creepage, is taken into consideration. To verify the equations of motion, various experiments have been carried out including measurement of gear efficiency, location of mass center, rolling resistance force, traction force, slip, maximum velocity and stopping distance. This paper addresses how the experiments are setup and carried out in detail. Also the results of experiments are compared with the analytical prediction, which showed good agreements with each other.

  • UHF method is very effective to diagnosis for partial discharge of GIS. In generally, inner UHF sensor can be attached on sheath cover of GIS under construction for periodic inspection. However, there is no inner UHF sensor for GIS of the domestic substation. We used the outer UHF sensor attached on spacer for GIS of existing substation. In this paper, we report the diagnosis result of partial discharge on 800kV GIS in domestic substation. From these results, we can find the quantity, reason and location of PD and certificate the performance of UHF method for partial discharge diagnosis of GIS.

Correction of node mapping distortions using universal serendipity elements in dynamical problems

  • In this paper, the use of universal serendipity elements (USE) to eliminate node mapping distortions for dynamic problem is presented. Rectangular shaped elements for USE are being introduced by using a flexible master element with an adjustable edge node location. The shape functions of the universal serendipity formulation are used to derive the mass and damping matrices for the dynamic analyses. These matrices eliminate the node mapping distortion errors that occurs incase of the standard shape function formulations. The verification of new formulation will be tested and the errors encountered in the standard formulation will be studied for a dynamically loaded deep cantilever.

  • In this paper, statistical approach to prediction of A-weighted noise level in ship cabins. based on multiple linear regression analysis, is conducted. The best regression formula is composed of seven parameters of the deadweight, the type of ship, the location of engines and cabins, the type of deckhouse and the propeller skew angle. Verification work was carried out with other 210 cabins' data in 6 ships. As a result, the formula ensures the accuracy of 3 dB(A) in 77 % of cases.

  • Urban transits of metropolises have been used by many citizens due to the merits of environment friendly traffic, mass transportation, safety and scheduled operation. It is very important to keep safety for the increased passengers. When the accidents as like fire occur, rapid evacuation from fire site is one of the most effective methods to decrease casualties. Furthermore, overseas buyers sometimes request the verification results of the passenger evacuation from rolling stock. In this study, algorithm for passenger flow analysis based on DEM(Discrete Element Method) is newly developed and made simulation program package. And, we applied it to the evacuation problem for urban transits. By using the developed program, we compared the simulation results of the effects of the location and size of door and elapsed time qualitatively and quantitatively.

  • In this paper, we developed the inspection system of electric vehicle pouch battery using image processing. Line scan cameras are used for acquiring the all parts of the pouch battery, and several steps of image processing for extracting significant dimensions(User Required Position) of the battery. In image processing, edge lines, node points, dimension lines, etc. were extracted using Preprocessor, Square Edge Detection, and Size Detection algorithms. This is used to measure the dimensions of the location requested by the user on the pouch battery. For verification of the inspection system, the dimensions of three pouch batteries produced in the same process were measured, and the mean and standard deviation were obtained to confirm the precision.
