  • In areas such as trade area analysis and urban planning, the maturity assessment of central places is important information to be taken into account for rational decision-making. In this study, 3 business areas, typical retail businesses (retail, personal service, food and beverage), are extracted from year 2004 and 2009 phone books, and centrality index and location quotients for 3 business areas are calculated. Using these outputs growth, declination, and maturation of central places are figured out, then comparing and analyzing these results assessment method for central places is proposed. As a result, it is known that the maturity of central place, such as growing, declining, and maturing, can be assessed by comparing the location quotients of 3 retail business areas. In growing central place, location quotient of food and beverage business is much higher than others, and in maturing central place, that of retail business is much higher than others. Assessment results of central places are very useful, as an important index, to determine branch opening or select business area, in trade area analysis.

  • Based on a case study of bank's Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) in Korea, this paper attempts to reveal dynamic changes occurring across the financial landscape with special emphasis on distribution pattern and location factors. Since the distribution of ATMs showed a concentrated pattern similar to that of bank branches, location quotients were examined to consider the effect of branches on ATM distribution. Furthermore, this study identified four factors that play pivotal roles in the location of ATMs. Compared to branch, location of ATM was more closely related to the population and demand factor, while the importance of local economy base and local economic power factor was reduced to some degree. This difference is attributable to the peculiar characteristic of the services offered by ATM. Lastly, demand factor turned out to be most influential in determining the ratio of ATMs to branches in each district, since lower deployment and operation costs allow ATMs to be more flexibly placed where demand for cash services is high.

  • The logistics industry is changing with the diversification of demand and related technology development. Thus, the transportation system is also changing to social problems and environmental damage, and the importance of rail freight is increasing with changes in the international logistics environment. This study analyzes railway freight competition structure using freight volume and suggests improving the competitiveness of railroad freight. To achieve the research purpose, this study was conducted using the Hirshmann-Herfindahl Index(HHI) and Location Quotients(LQ) method. As a result, the concentration trend of railway trends has increased from 0.213 to 0.238 during the last 9 years, and LQ analysis has enabled the identification of local competition lines by item. The study result confirmed that policy measures on railway freight system, railway infrastructure construction and railway operation are necessary to enhance railway competitiveness.

  • In spite of her abundant natural resources for tourist industry, Kangreung and Sokcho area became lagged in economic development during the national industrialization. The major purpose of this study is to exactly purpose of this study is to exactly measure the impacts of tourist industry on regional development. Through the regional input-output analysis, we found some critical facts: (1) Input coefficients are relatively high in those industries as fish products, food and drink products, and printing and publishing. (2) Input coefficients are high in fiber and apparel products, and other manufac-turing. (3) Induced production effects are high in chemical and coal products, fish products, food and fish products, printing and publishing, and public administration for Sokcho. (4) As for the induced employment effect, food and lodging, other services, wholesale and retail show high coefficients. (5) As for the location quotients, food and lodging, fish products, transportation and ware housing are identified as basic industries. Through the questionnaire survey, we also found some important facts: (1) Residents tend to evaluate employment effects higher than the income effects from resort-related development. (2) Pollution, forest demolition, general price increase, and traffic congestions are more serious than ever reported. (3) Willingness to participate in resort development is high, but is discouraged by the lack of regional capital. Based on these findings, we suggest some future directions of tourist industry: (1) blocking the leakage of income produced in tourist and tourist industry, (2) connection between fishery and tourist industry, (3) development of tourist route, and (4) administrative reshuffling that helps joint development between private and public sectors.

  • Public library usage is closely related to the accessibility to library facilities. Therefore, public library planning and development authorities should consider the policies for improving the library accessibility of community, for releasing disparities of the spatial accessibility and for increasing location efficiency of public libraries. In this regard, this study strives to analyze the spatial distribution of public libraries in Busan and to derive the regions that lack public libraries by identifying main characteristics using geographical information systems (GIS): identify the blind spot for public library service, analyze the hot and cold spot for the supply of libraries, and identify the vulnerable areas of library based on population density. The result of the study will contribute to understand the spatial distribution of public libraries in Busan and to prioritize sites where public library should be constructed in order to improve the accessibility to public library services.

  • This study attempts to investigate the spatial characteristics of medical hospital distributions in Korea. For the purpose we examine the inter- and intra regional variations in the distributions of clinics by specialty subject. In particular, we analyze the distribution patterns of Location Quotients of clinics for 12 specialty subjects in Seoul. Medical services tend to be concentrated on the large cities, especially in the Metropolitan Seoul Area. In particular, clinics and medical doctors as well as large scale general hospitals have been strongly concentrated on the Metropolitan Seoul area. These circumstace may be related with the fact that medical hospitals are established and operated by private sector in Korea, and thus they attempt to find their location where they can get maximum profit. The distribution patterns of clinics of 12 specialty subjects can be classified to several characteristic patterns. In particular, clinics of plastic surgeon tend to be strongly concentrated on the Gangnam area in Seoul. Finally, clinics of plastic surgeon tend to be located on the areas near the subway stations along the subway Line 2 and Line 3 in the beginning. The existence of plastic surgeons turns out to have significant role on determining the location for the newly opening plastic surgeons in the later. Therefore, their agglomeration has been getting more strongly.

  • The population and employment of Cheongju have increased rapidly since the 1970s. This study examines the industrial employment change of Cheongju City and performs a shift-share analysis for the employment growth. The data used in this study are mainly from the 1985, 2000 and 2005 Census of Population and Housing. This study first explained the population change and industrial structure of Cheongju, then reviewed the development of shift-share models. Location quotients and specialization coefficients resulted from this study revealed the diversifying tendency in the urban industrial structure. Shift-share analysis employing the modified Arcelus model elucidated the favorable industrial mix and the competitiveness of industrial sectors. As a whole, Cheongju has advantageous industrial structure in comparison with that of the nation. All sectors of Cheongju except several services sectors grew faster than those of the nation and showed positive competitive effects. It is suggested to utilize more disaggregated industrial data in more fractured subperiod in order to pinpoint the competitive industries.

  • This study attempts to understand new immigrants' socio-economic adaptation by linking them with the restructuring economies in large US metropolitan areas. Selecting Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Atlanta, we examine the industrial distribution of employed Hispanic and Asian immigrant groups with respect to the industrial change experienced between 1980 and 1990, and residential concentration represented by higher location quotients. The findings are that new immigrant groups are employed in overall industrial sectors close to that of total population and their large residential concentrations are displayed near downtown as well as outlying areas. These suggest that new immigrant groups experience different socio-economic adaptation from those generalized in the previous European immigrants, concentrated in manufacturing sector and near downtown area. This study proposes that divergent economic restructuring across metropolitan areas and new immigrants' backgrounds should be considered for better understanding of immigrants' economic adaptation in the current economic restructuring and its spatial manifestation in the US contexts.
