  • This paper investigates the social attitudes toward compensation of local communities hosting noxious facilities. Using a contingent valuation survey, we find that respondents are more distrustful of government institutes and waste disposal firms than non-governmental organizations. Siting procedures for waste disposal facilities are thought to be unfair 10 general. We also find that social distrust influences the likelihood of voting yes in a referendum to compensate the hosting communities of waste disposal facilities. Individuals who are distrustful of government institutes and waste disposal firms exhibit positive attitudes for the compensation of hosting communities. The higher the level of compensation offered, the less likely to vote yes for compensation.

  • Successful hosting of mesa-events such as the universiade games usually brings many external changes such as more domestic and foreign travelers, image improvement of the host country and region as well as promotion of the local economy through improving the infrastructure for the contest. This longitudinal study analyzed the effects of the winter universiade games, which were held at Muju in 1997, on the hosting rural area, based upon a multidimensional study. As a result, the inhabitants sensed that hosting the winter universiade games had large-scale investment effects on both the tourism industry and the regional development. • The Japanese Government selected Mutsu, Aomori Prefecture as a provisional spent-fuel repository site. This comes as a result of the prefecture's five-year campaign to host the site since 2000. Korea stores spent nuclear fuel within sites of nuclear power plants, and expects the storage capacity to reach its limit by the year 2016. This compels Korea to learn the cases of Japan. Having successfully hosted Gyeongju as a site for low-to-intermediate-level nuclear waste repository, Korea has already learned the potential process of hosting spent fuel storage site. The striking difference between the two countries in the process of hosting the site is that the Korean government had to offer the local city a large amount of subsidy for hosting through competitive citizens' referendum among candidate cities while it was the leadership of the local municipality that enabled the controversial decision in Japan. It is also a distinguishable characteristics of Japan that not a huge subsidy is provided to the local host city. I hope this study offers an idea to Korea's future effort to select a spent-fuel host site.

  • The purpose of this study is to survey fundamental limitations and problems of sports event hosting from the critical point of view and to set future-oriented perspective. The reason and legitimacy for hosting sports event have come from pragmatism based on ideological logic behind politics. Thus, the flow of advanced studies was mostly limited to the category of efficiency. However, there is fundamental limitation in sports even hosting in terms of its financial expectation and efficiency. Critical approach will contribute to minimizing side effects caused from blind acceptance through awakening dispassionate and realistic judgment. In addition, rational selection of sports even hosting can be achieved through interconnection of sports culturism's directivity as an advanced sense of sports culture, integrated perspective that penetrates problems of growth and distribution and local governance as apolitical philosophy, and of course, through concentration of energy.

  • The purpose of this study was to gather useful information for establishing an efficient marketing direction by investigating the performance (satisfaction) and importance for the quality, popularization and merchandising of local foods in the Ulsan area. A questionnaire was answered by 500 citizens over 16 years old living in the Ulsan area. The study data were analyzed by Importance-Performance Analysis method(IPA), frequency analysis, T-test, and ANOVA. The analysis of the quality attributes of local foods for tourist merchandising showed that importance was generally higher than performance. 'Sanitation', 'taste', 'freshness', 'healthfulness', 'nutrition' and 'service' were revealed to be significant ones in the quality attributes. The respondents thought that a lot of emphasis needs to be placed on 'generalizing and globalizing local cuisine', 'passing down traditional recipes','hosting various cultural events related with traditional foods', and 'increasing the number of restaurants specializing in local traditional foods'.

  • Based on the challenges encountered in the urban regeneration projects (general neighborhood-type) of Anjung District and Sinjang District in Pyeongtaek City, this study aims to explore the key factors of improvement measures for urban regeneration projects. Using the first survey conducted among shopping mall owners, employees, and residents, this study finds a significant level of awareness and very strong needs for urban regeneration projects. On the other hand, the overall satisfaction levels are observed to be low across the three factors: social, economic, and cultural. The second expert survey and the subsequent Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) analysis conducted for improvement measures reveal notable discrepancies in the prioritization of factors between administrative experts and practical experts. For the importance of administrative experts, the establishment of network-type regional governance was ranked first for the importance, followed by hosting events related to the U.S. military and long-term pre-market operations, and expanding exchange and cooperation between the U.S. Forces Korea and the community. For the importance of working-level experts, hosting U.S. military-related events and long-term pre-market operations was ranked first, while supporting U.S. military-related festivals and developing local natural landscape resources was ranked second. Our findings suggest the need for proactive measures such as attracting commercial facilities to stimulate demand from both the U.S. military and local residents, thereby revitalizing general neighborhood-type urban regeneration projects, developing programs for local tourism, and operating pre-market operations in the long run. Therefore, this study highlights the importance of regional government cooperation for urban regeneration projects.

  • A mega sport event as the globalization phenomenon is not only the symbol of the process of modernization but also the vehicle to upgrade global power and hold a dominant position in the world competition under the post-industrial era. This study notifies the role of mega sport events as a strategy for urban innovation in the context of global and local. Comparing the different roles of mega sport events between developing countries and developed countries, we intend to answer two questions: 1) what explains the nature and role of mega sport event, and 2) what are the major evidences of the transition in the globalization era. The conceptual framework, based on the temporal and spatial perspective, provides the mechanism through which the strategy for urban innovation has been changed from 'motivation for modernization' to 'rethinking of localization.' Focusing on the case of Seoul, we also compare major issues between two phases: role of agent, urban form, and urban development. Finally, this study sheds light on the concept of 'glocalization' which means the convergence of globalization and localization; and suggests the roles of (local) agent for hosting mega sport events.
