This paper presents the displacement behavior safety of hollow shafts with an equivalent volume for various cross sectional area using a finite element method. The FEM results indicate that the hollow shafts with X-type or Y-type columns between outer tube, middle tube and inner tube may reduce a maximum displacement at the middle length of hollow shafts. Especially, the load-bearing column of X-type or Y-type hollow shaft is directly connected between outer tube and inner tube without a shift for reducing the vertical displacement. And increased thickness of a load-bearing column is recommended for reducing the vertical displacement and increasing the displacement behavior safety for an equivalent volume of a hollow shaft.
This paper is experimental and numerical research about the sliding behavior of cantilever retaining walls resisting surcharge loads. In experimental research, centrifuge model tests at the lg and 40 g-level were performed by changing the location of model footing and its width. Bearing capacity of model footing and characteristics of load-settlement and load-lateral displacement of retaining wall were investigated. Test results of bearing capacity were compared with modified jarquio method, based on the limit equilibrium method with elasticity theory. For the numerical analysis, the commericially available program of FLAC was used by implementing the hyperbolic constitutive relationships to compare with test result about load-settlement and load-displacement of retaining wall, bearing capacity of strip footing.

To examine small fatigue crack behavior, the crack opening displacement (COD) was measured for surface cracks in the range of few tens to hundreds .mu.m using the computerized Interferometric Strain/Displacement Gage (ISDG) which could measure the relative displacement with a resolution of 0.02 .mu.m. The load-COD record is stored and analyzed after the test to determined the opening load. Single-edge notched specimens, 2.3mm thick, of Al 2024-T3 were precracked at load ratios of 0.0, -1.0 and -2.0 to make small fatigue cracks. The opening loads were measured these small cracks and compared with those of long cracks. The opening load ratios for the short cracks are about 10% smaller than those for long cracks at positive R-ratios, but are about 100% smaller at negative R-ratios.

The object of this paper was to analyze combined load acting on agricultural reservoir. This study was carried out to 3-D numerical modeling for displacement characteristic and seismic acceleration characteristic. The results of study were analyzed and summarized as follow. It was found that the displacement caused by combined load acting on railway and agricultural reservoir did not reflect the effect of load and the seismic wave consistently. The ground accelerations that occur in railway and dam were amplified because 3-D numerical analysis program interprets ground as an elastic body. Actual ground shows characteristics of elasticity and plasticity, so measured values will show different tendency. As a result of analyzing displacement characteristics, it is considered to be related to stiffness. The Ofunato seismic wave, the displacement (77.1 mm) of the body satisfied the allowable displacement (220 mm), but The Hachinohe seismic wave (282.8 mm) did not. It is considered that displacement caused by combined load is affected not only by acceleration but also by characteristics of materials.

Computer simulations of the mechanical behavior of a three point bend specimen with a quarter notch under impact load are performed. The case with a load application point at the side is considered. An elastic-plastic von Mises material model is chosen. Three phases such as impact bouncing and bending phases are found to be identified during the period from the moment of impact to the estimated time for crack initiation. It is clearly shown that no plastic deformation near the crack tip is appeared at the impact phase. However it is confirmed that the plastic zone near the crack tip emerges in the second phase and the plastic hinge has been formed in the third phase. Gap opening displacement crack tip opening displacement and strain rate are compared with rate dependent material(visco-plastic material). The stability during various dynamic load can be seen by using the simulation of this study.
Prediction of prestressed concrete girder integral abutment bridge (IAB) load effect requires understanding of the inherent uncertainties as it relates to thermal loading, time-dependent effects, bridge material properties and soil properties. In addition, complex inelastic and hysteretic behavior must be considered over an extended, 75-year bridge life. The present study establishes IAB displacement and internal force statistics based on available material property and soil property statistical models and Monte Carlo simulations. Numerical models within the simulation were developed to evaluate the 75-year bridge displacements and internal forces based on 2D numerical models that were calibrated against four field monitored IABs. The considered input uncertainties include both resistance and load variables. Material variables are: (1) concrete elastic modulus; (2) backfill stiffness; and (3) lateral pile soil stiffness. Thermal, time dependent, and soil loading variables are: (1) superstructure temperature fluctuation; (2) superstructure concrete thermal expansion coefficient; (3) superstructure temperature gradient; (4) concrete creep and shrinkage; (5) bridge construction timeline; and (6) backfill pressure on backwall and abutment. IAB displacement and internal force statistics were established for: (1) bridge axial force; (2) bridge bending moment; (3) pile lateral force; (4) pile moment; (5) pile head/abutment displacement; (6) compressive stress at the top fiber at the mid-span of the exterior span; and (7) tensile stress at the bottom fiber at the mid-span of the exterior span. These established IAB displacement and internal force statistics provide a basis for future reliability-based design criteria development.

Suction anchors are used for floating structures because they have advantages in installation and stability. Recently, the demand for floating structures requiring low allowable displacement has increased. Thus, it is strongly suggested that the displacement of the suction anchor be evaluated. However, conventional studies regarding suction anchors have concentrated on the capacity of the anchor, and research on the displacement of the anchor is limited. In particular, rotation is the primary behavior of a suction anchor subjected to an inclined load, and related information has been insufficient. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to investigate the rotation behavior of a suction anchor via centrifuge model tests. The experimental parameters are the inclination of the pull-out load, anchor dimensions, and aspect ratio. The rotation values of suction anchors were compared using a series of load-rotation curves. The results show that the inclination of the load has a dominant influence on the rotation behavior of the suction anchor.

The behavior of a V-belt CVT was investigated both analytically and experimentally. It was found that as the torque load increased, the belt radial displacement increased in inward radial direction for the driven pulley while the radial displacement decreased slightly and increased for the driver pulley. The relative belt displacement for the driver was negligible compared with that of the driven. The experimental results were in good accordance with the theoretical results except for the inlet and exit region of the pulley. The speed ratio-torque load-axial force relationship derived from the belt behavior analysis also showed good agreement with the experiment. It is suggested that the results of this paper can be used as basic design informations of a V-belt CVT.
The mechanical behavior of a micropile due to horizontal load has not yet clearly identified in Korea. It has generally estimated from that of a traditional pile because there is no standard method even though it has shorter length. To tell the truth, its behavior is very different from a traditional pile's. Specifically, it is general fact that horizontal resistance of earth is one of the main factors to control the mechanical behavior of micropile. To this reason, a laboratory model has been made in this study to estimate the behavior of a micropile which loaded increasingly horizontally. The laboratory model has been designed to estimate both the behavior of load to displacement and skin friction to displacement. And the analysis of the latter was compared with the solution of strain wedge model. In the end, it was proved that the mechanical behavior of a micropile should be estimated from considering the horizontal resistance of earth.

Since the allowable bearing capacities of piles in weathered/fractured rock are mainly governed by settlement, the load-displacement behavior of the rock socketed pile should be well known. To predict pile head settlement at the design stage, the exact understanding of the load-transfer mechanisms is essential. Therefore, in this research, the load-transfer mechanisms of drilled shaft socketed into weathered rock was investigated. For that, 5 cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters of 1,000 mm were socketed into weathered gneiss. The static axial load tests and the load-transfer measurements were performed to examine the axial resistant behavior of the piles. A comprehensive field/laboratory testing program on weathered rock at the field test sites was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. And then, the effect of rock mass condition on the load transfer mechanism was investigated. The side shear resistance of the pile in moderately weathered rock reached to yielding point at a few millimeter displacements, and after that, the rate of resistance increment dramatically decreased. However, that in the highly /completely weathered rock did not show the obvious yielding point, and gradually increased showing the hyperbolic pattern until with the relatively high displacement (>10 mm). The end bearing-displacement curves showed linear increase at least until with the base displacement of approximately 10 mm, regardless rock mass conditions.
